CNET: RIM in talks to squeeze out BlackBerry music service

Those “sources with knowledge” are at it again, this time stirring the pot over a possible BlackBerry-branded music service. According to both CNET and Reuters, said sources revealed that RIM is in negotiations with “the four largest record companies” to launch a service that would “run on top of BlackBerry Messenger.” What that means, exactly, is anyone’s guess at the moment, but word is the mobile phone maker has already signed one label, and is close to snagging two more. Could this be the move RIM needs to shake off its enterprise-only reputation? We’ll just have to wait and see — according to Reuters, the service is expected to be announced by September 5th.

Nokia 800 and Acer M310 caught on Windows Phone dev’s stats, likely in testing

The fact that Nokia and Acer are busily preparing Windows Phones is no secret, but Sea Ray and W4 may not be the manufacturers’ only projects. Elbert Perez, a Windows Phone game developer with a keen eye for statistics, was looking through a list of the various devices that run his games, and a couple gems stood out — the Nokia 800 and Acer M310. The plot thickens when realizing that these names have never been seen before. Sadly, such a revelation prompts more questions than answers: are these completely new phones, or just the Sea Ray and W4 with new names? If testers are playing games on them, can we assume these are close to production? But don’t forget the lingering question that won’t ever be answered: are they winning the game?

ASUS’ next gen Eee Pad Transformer to be first Kal-El device?

Earlier this year, NVIDIA teased us all with the promise of its forthcoming Kal-El SoC, indicating an August debut. Well, we’re currently in the thick of that hot and hazy month with no clear sign of an incoming quad-core tablet, but certainly more release gossip. According to Fudzilla, multiple sources have confirmed ASUS’ next Eee Pad Transformer will indeed be first in line to pack four cores, lending credence to Chairman Jonney Shih’s claims the tab would be “impressive.” Concrete launch details for the slate have yet to be announced, but if Shih’s pre-CES timeline pans out, you’ll only have four long months to wait for a Glow Ball hands-on.

Apple adding DisplayPort to iOS devices?

Not content with just building offices in the shape of UFOs, Apple is on the hunt for a “Signal Integrity Manager.” That’s an engineer who balances the noise that chips and circuit boards emit — which, if left unchecked could overpower your iOS devices’ data signals. Apple is specifically looking for someone with DisplayPort experience (plus ten years general experience and two years leading a small team) to work on future chip development — like the A6. The move suggests that the standard could be coming in the future, but since the position is still listed, it seems unlikely that we’ll see DisplayPort included with the next iPhone / iPad at this point.

HTC Ruby to be dubbed Amaze 4G, come with 1.5GHz CPU and 4.3-inch display?

The white shell of the HTC Ruby exudes a “ghostly” quality, which seems to explain its ability to appear and disappear at will. This time the smartphone’s popped up in reports highlighting a couple important revelations: according to BGR, the Ruby’s slated to become the carrier’s flagship and will be looked upon as the Sensation 4G’s big brother. We’re not so sure about it being a literal statement, since the Ruby is speculated to have the same 4.3-inch display as its sibling, but it’ll definitely be more power-packed with a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and HSPA+ radio with connection speeds reaching up to 42Mbps. But that’s not all, folks: PocketNow, contributing some gossip of its own, is reporting that the phone will be called the Amaze 4G by T-Mobile, and will also have an 8 megapixel camera with dedicated still and video capture buttons. Now that leaks and reports are starting to pour in this quickly, it may not be too long before the Ruby Amaze 4G completely outrumors the Droid Bionic — which is not an easy task by any means.

HTC Vigor with 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and Beats sighted in Dutch online store

Not much is known about the HTC Vigor, but if the above image is accurate, we have more than a wagonload to look forward to. A supposed render and spec list of the new superphone showed up on The Phone House, a Dutch online retailer, and was quietly taken off the site at a later time. According to the site, the Vigor will have a 4.3-inch HD display with 1280 x 720 resolution; it’ll also offer a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, Android 2.3.4, and integrated Beats Technology — which would make the Vigor the first labor of HTC’s latest purchasing decision. There’s no word on if the device will have LTE inside, though Verizon docs indicated previously that it’s geared up to be the Thunderbolt’s replacement sometime this fall. This time, let’s get that battery life figured out, okay?

AT&T postponing the LG Thrill 4G to September 4?

Are you excited that a 3D phone is coming to AT&T? If you answered yes, sit down and think happy thoughts, because we’re now hearing that the Thrill 4G — aka the LG Optimus 3D — may be delayed once more. According to a screenshot leaked from Radio Shack, the ill-fated device is getting pushed back to a tentative September 4th launch date for unknown reasons. As such, the reseller’s putting a halt on pre-orders of the phone until further notice. We’ve reached out to AT&T for official comment and will let you know if we hear anything back. Regardless, at the rate this phone is going, the Thrill is quickly devolving into a depression.

Will Intel’s Core i7 Sandy Bridge E CPUs ship without fans or heatsinks?

Over the past few months, we’ve peeked Intel’s roadmap more than once, but all told we’ve been treated to scant few details about its high-end desktop line, Sandy Bridge E (that’s “E” for enthusiasts). Today, though, VR-Zone is reporting that the next generation of these CPUs will ship without fans or heatsinks — a tacit acknowledgment, perhaps, that Intel’s home-brewed cooling system will be inadequate in the eyes of hobbyists anyway. We reached out to Intel for comment, and while the company stayed mum on the topic of cooling, it did go out of its way to clarify another point the folks at VR-Zone made in their report. The outlet had said that the forthcoming 3820, 3930K and 3960X CPUs will be rated at 130 watts, but will consume closer to 180W and draw up to 23 amps from the 12V2 supply rail — all without overclocking, mind you. An Intel rep writes: “TDP expectations for the 2nd Generation Intel Core i7 processor family for socket LGA-2011 are in line with previous generations of high end desktop products.” In other words, built-in cooling system or no, the TDP should be in line with what we’ve seen from other Extreme-branded processors. As for the cooling, it’s unclear when, exactly, we’ll get the full spill — the CPUs are rumored to launch before the end of the year, with the quad-core 3820 arriving after the six-core 3930K and 3960X.

Telefonica iPhone stock being recalled in time for September 12th launch?

Well folks… looks like we’re finally getting some meat to all the iPhone 5/4S rumors that have been swirling around for months. We got some interesting news from a vigilant tipster today: beginning August 22nd, Telefonica will begin scaling back its current iPhone stock through September 12th. According to the source, this three week program is a move that “will of course prepare us for the launch of a new smart phone.” While the date next month should sound familiar, we’ve heard recently that the launch will actually take place sometime in October. Either way, a move like this is usually a telling sign that points directly to a new model launch. Keep your eyes pinned here, and prepare yourself, as it appears Mr. Jobs may have something planned for the fall.

Apple Reportedly Testing 4G LTE iPhone

Mobile carriers reportedly are testing 4G versions of Apple’s smartphone. But before you get all excited, it may not necessarily be the iPhone 5.

BGR says iPhone carriers are testing models with 4G LTE capability. It discovered evidence of a property list file (.plist) within the firmware, which definitively revealed Apple is developing the technology. Whether it’s for the next generation iPhone, or a generation after that, is yet to be seen.

As we get closer to the anticipated announcement of the next-gen iPhone, rumors are flying. After missing its traditional June launch, rumors pegged the announcement for September. That’s recently been debunked by some in favor of an announcement in October. Whenever it appears, the the iPhone 5 is expected to sport an A5 processor, 8-megapixel camera sensor, “curved” cover glass and a flat metal back.

The Guardian previously reported carriers have been testing iPhone 5 models inside “specially constructed boxes,” with hardware encased in “a dummy body.” This makes it seem it could be the iPhone 5 that is being tested for 4G support.

It looks like Apple is putting in a lot more time testing its next gen iPhone in the wild than it did with its predecessor in order to avoid something like last year’s Antennagate fiasco — which really, in the scheme of things, was not that big of a deal.

Or maybe employees just aren’t being quite as scrupulous about Apple’s closely guarded secrets as they have been in the past.
