Toyota sells one million Prii in US alone

Thank you Toyota, for teaching us the plural of Prius, because somehow, “Toyota sells one million Priuples” just doesn’t jive. That’s right, the Japanese automaker announced Wednesday that it has officially sold its one millionth Prius on American soil. It’s reportedly also reached a couple of other sales milestones in the last six months, with worldwide Prius sales reaching two million in October and overall Toyota hybrid sales exceeding three million in March. Now that’s a whole lot of Prii. Full PR after the break.

Halo 3 Pushes Xbox Sales to the Top!

This article was written on October 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

halo 3 console When Halo 3 broke the record in the video game industry by selling over 1 million pre-orders, we knew September was going to be a huge month for Microsoft. Not only did they sell millions of dollars worth of Halo 3 games, they also sold millions of dollars worth of Xbox 360 consoles.  The official numbers that detail how many Xbox 360 consoles actually sold won’t be released until Thursday (October 18th), but we’ve got a pretty good idea at just how great of a month it was thanks to Wedbush Morgan Analyst, Michael Pachter.

According to Pachter, Halo 3 helped sell 450,000 Xbox 360s in the month of September. The number he’s given means that the Xbox 360 outsold the Wii by 25,000 units. That doesn’t mean that the coming months will be all downhill for Microsoft though. Pachter went on to say “Although we think that sales of Halo 3 accounted for virtually all of the growth during the month, we think that the game drove hardware sales and positions the industry for even greater sales in November and December, when many Halo players will be ready for a new challenge.  We are optimistic about software sales through the end of the year.”

Here’s the breakdown of the predicted sales for the month of September:

  1. Xbox 360 – 450,000 units
  2. DS – 430,000 units
  3. Wii – 425,000 units
  4. PSP – 252,000 units
  5. PS2 – 222,000 units
  6. PS3 – 150,000 units
  7. GBA – 65,000 units

Another factor that probably helped the Xbox take the #1 spot is that conveniently timed price cut. Back in early August Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox 360 console by 50 dollars.  Considering Halo 3 costs a little over $50 for the standard edition, consumers were able to get the console plus the game for what the system originally cost. Not a bad deal!

In general, software sales are expected to reach $655 million this year which is 47% higher than in 2006.  With both the PS3 and the Wii launched late last year, it’s no surprise that 2007 will have been so successful. Pachter also predicts that a PS2 price cut is possible before the end of the year, and his guess is that it will be priced at $99! If that’s true, I imagine we’ll see software sales increase even further thanks to those who just can’t pass up a good deal on a console!

Visualized: eBay’s iPad 2 sales, thus far

Although eBay figures don’t exactly correlate with Apple’s sales numbers, it’s interesting to note who’s buying what, and where. Last year, for example, in the first two weeks after the Apple iPad hit shelves, 65 percent of all iPads sold on eBay went abroad. This year, in the same timeframe, the percentages have been flipped — 65 percent of iPad 2s sold on eBay remained in America, or around 7,800 tablets. Perhaps we’re just seeing higher demand or maybe people don’t like waiting in line. Peep the source link to dive deeper into the comparison.

Gadget Lab Notes: Surgery Robot Folds Miniscule Paper Airplane

The da Vinci robot isn’t just for surgery — It can also make petite paper airplanes

The da Vinci Surgical Robot Makes Paper Planes the Size of a Penny
The da Vinci surgical robot is normally used to perform precise, delicate incisions in the operating room. Dr. James Porter decided it’d be perfect for some other applications as well, namely, making ridiculously tiny paper airplanes. I’m talking paper airplanes smaller than a penny. The robot is also repurposed to paint someone’s nails for St. Patrick’s Day. Not too many people can say they’ve had a mani pedi done by a robot.

The Nintendo 3DS UK Launch Was The Company’s Best Ever
The recent launch of the Nintendo 3DS in the UK was even more successful than that of the Wii. 113,000 of the handheld consoles were sold its opening weekend, beating out the 105,000 Nintendo Wiis that were sold when it debuted. The original Nintendo DS sold 87,000 its opening weekend.

Apple 3-D Camera Patent Describes a Hardware Based System
Handheld Apple gadgets could support 3-D photography in the future, if a recently unearthed patent is any indicator. The patent describes a method that uses dual rear-facing cameras on a mobile device like the iPhone and specific hardware to perform a “deterministic calculation for stereo disparity compensation.” The patent claims that when software is used to perform that job a lot of guesswork is involved. Apple’s system would use multiple imaging systems, including separate luma, chroma, and depth and distance sensors to transform an image from 2-D to 3-D, and it would also allow for 3-D video recording.

Nintendo says 3DS sets day-one handheld sales record, doesn’t quantify it

How many Nintendo 3DS handhelds got sold stateside after Triforce Johnson got one? Enough for Nintendo to boast: “U.S. day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo hand-held system in our history,” the company claimed today, adding that the volume of tech support calls it received was also “well below the rate experienced during past hardware launches,” and that there are no widespread issues with the handheld. That may sound a bit premature, considering Nintendo won’t provide actual sales figures until April 14th, but we’re willing to consider the possibility that the Virtual Boy’s legacy is done: perhaps this time, the only major headaches Nintendo’s handheld will create are for the likes of Sony and Microsoft.

Psystar’s Mac Clones Merely a Scam?

This article was written on April 16, 2008 by CyberNet.

psystar scam Remember the Psystar company that we wrote about yesterday? They are the ones who make the Open Computer that is capable of running Mac OS X, and they’ll even go as far as to preinstall it for you. Because their prices are surprisingly reasonable there has been some concern raised as to whether the company is a scam.

Yesterday the Guardian decided to delve into whether the company is real or not. After a little digging things were not looking so good:

The site was registered in 2000, according to whois, but what’s odd is that searches on Google and on Live.com don’t turn up anything about the company before this week. Zip. Zero. Nada.

I called the Miami Chamber of Commerces and its Better Business Bureau. They’ve never heard of it.

I called the company. The automated system asked if I want Sales? Support? Human Resources? Let’s have a laugh and call HR. No reply. (This was 11.45am their time.) Did I want to leave a message? Press the pound key when done. I did. “Error.”

And things progressively got worse. The author noticed that earlier in the day their office was showing up as “10645 SW 112 St, Miami FL 33176” and in the midst of writing his post it had changed to “10481 NW 28th St, Miami, FL 33172.” That’s definitely a little eerie.

Some people were even reporting that they were able to complete the checkout process using false information, and that the process wasn’t at all secure. I wanted to see for myself whether that was true, but immediately after adding the item to the cart I was presented with this notification:

Thank you for visiting Psystar. We’re sorry but the store is temporarily down due to the fact that we are currently unable to process any credit card transactions.

And now it seems as though their entire store is down for the same reason. I was hoping that Psystar would come through, but the question of whether this is a scam is definitely sitting in the back of my head. Hopefully some of these machines will make their way out into the wild so that we can rest easy!

iPad 2 international launch causes people to line up in line all over again (updated)

You may or may not know this, but the iPad 2 became available in 22 countries today, and from the looks of it above (snapped at London’s Regent Street store), waiting in line was part of the deal. Now, we have this theory that people love to line up for anything, so we’re not going to draw any conclusions about how dreamy the product is, but please, if you shot any line photos today, feel free to send them our way and we’ll throw them in our post after the break.

Ebook sales in the US double year-on-year, paper books suffer double-digit losses

We doubt the world will ever get to a stage where it’ll completely ditch ye olde paper books, but the US consumer market seems to clearly have its heart set on the electronic kind right now. Net ebook sales in January were this week reported to have accumulated $69.9 million in revenue for their publishers, which amounts to a 116 percent jump from last year’s total for the month. During the same period, adult hardcovers were down 11.3 percent to $49.1 million and paperbacks faced a similar reduction in demand and fell to $83.6 million, a precipitous drop of 19.7 percent year-on-year. Educational and children’s books weren’t spared from this cull of the physical tome, either — skip past the break to see the full statistical breakdown.

Now that’s what we call an impulse buy.

Microsoft sells 10 million Kinects, 10 million Kinect games

Microsoft sells 10 million Kinects, 10 million games too

First it was one, then two and a half, then eight, and now we’re into double digits. Microsoft has announced that the company has sold its 10 millionth Kinect, surprising us all by making it the world’s fastest selling consumer electronics device according to Guinness, finding buyers for somewhere north of 10 million games, too. Now, we know what you’re thinking Mr. Cynical: “Each Kinect comes with a game and so of course M$ has sold 10 million titles!” Swallow that smug grin, because that’s 10 million standalone games sold, and while a 1:1 tie ratio is hardly approaching PS2 territory it’s certainly better than many had expected — especially you, Mister C.
