Electric car sales watch: 281 Volts and 67 Leafs sold in US during February

Neither Chevrolet nor Nissan have felt proud enough of their EV sales numbers to list them on their latest press releases, but our colleagues over at Autoblog Green have dug those numbers up anyhow. They make for dispiriting reading if you’re an electric car well-wisher, as the Volt‘s sales declined from January’s tally of 321 to an even less impressive 281, while the Leaf closed February with only 67 US sales, down 20 on last month. Upon seeing their previous numbers, we postulated that both cars are suffering from constrained supply, which is likely still the case, but it feels ironic to us that electric vehicles, whose driving experience offers instant torque, are taking their sweet time to rev up their sales.

Sony trumps PS3 sales at GDC, 41 million sold worldwide, more than 80 percent are online

It’s tough to get solid numbers out of Sony for hardware sales, usually they’re cloaked behind a vague “shipped” figure, but at GDC this week the company gave us one rather impressive number: 41 million. That’s the number of PS3 consoles the company says it has sold worldwide, and over 80 percent are sucking down data from ye olde internet. Confirming the moneymaking trend we heard about last month, in 2010 the PlayStation store saw a 60 percent boost in traffic and a 70 percent boost in revenue from a total of 70 million PSN accounts. Let’s see… 70 million PSN user accounts, 41 million PS3 consoles, 80 percent of which are online — that means almost everyone has one account for gaming and a second for griefing. Sounds about right.

AT&T ShopAlerts: first location-based ads from a US carrier kick off in four markets

A few third-party apps have been going after this market for a while now, but AT&T has just become the first American carrier to throw its weight behind location-based ads in teaming up with Placecast to launch the so-called AT&T ShopAlerts service in four markets. Residents of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco will be the first to experience the mind-bending future of advertising — presumably because they’re densely-populated enough to make a location-based trial worthwhile — with seven inaugural partners: HP, Kmart, JetBlue, SC Johnson, Kibbles ‘n Bits (‘n Bits ‘n Bits), Nature’s Recipe, and the “got milk?” people. There are many players in the e-reader world, but few have managed to gain any sort of traction. Though it hasn’t achieved Kindle levels of success Barnes & Noble is taking pride in saying that its Nook series of readers has conquered 25 percent of the US e-book market. The company doesn’t cite any specific sales figures to back up that number, but we’ll go with it. Sadly, though, there’s another 25 percent number that is detailed and isn’t nearly so positive: that’s how much the company’s profits dropped from this period last year. That was said to be due to heavy investments in the Nook but, despite that, B&N managed to post a $60.6 million profit — certainly better than some of the competition.

Renault’s Zoe EV to give Nissan Leaf competition at lower price — Nissan-Renault alliance forges on

Ever since they struck an alliance back in 1999, Renault and Nissan have been super tight, sharing both a CEO and a goal to make EVs more accessible, but with Renault’s Zoe gearing up to hit the market in 2012, the French automaker has proven it’s not pulling any punches when it comes to competing with its Japanese partner. In fact, reports give Renault’s EV a starting price of roughly €15,000, which compared to the Leaf’s €27,000 price tag, is a pretty hefty difference. The catch — of course, there’s a catch — is Zoe owners will have to lease their batteries for about €100 a month. With the added battery expense, however, it would still take nearly 10 years for the Zoe to meet the Leaf’s price. We hope this doesn’t put a damper on this 12-year love affair, but honestly, we’ll take an affordable EV any way we can get it.

Apple and other music retailers purportedly looking at 24-bit, high-fidelity audio downloads

Digital downloads, at least pertaining to music, have come a long, long way. The iTunes Music Store in particular has surpassed Walmart as America’s leading seller of music, and it’s evolved from a DRM-laden mess to a restriction-free(ish) marketplace with higher-than-average bitrate support. But it seems that 256kbps simply isn’t high enough. According to unnamed “executives involved in talks,” Apple — as well as a few other digital music retailers — are currently in discussions with labels to “improve the quality of the song files they sell.” Essentially, these retailers are hoping to hawk 24-bit audio rather than the compressed 16-bit files available today, possibly with a price premium attached. The real trick, however, won’t be coercing the labels to cooperate, but to retool future devices to actually play back 24-bit files. iTunes itself is already capable of handling ’em, but the iPod, iPhone and a slew of other handheld devices aren’t. The report doesn’t mention how close to a deal anyone is, but we’re guessing it’ll be sooner rather than later. Here’s hoping the iPhone 5 ships with 128GB of capacity — we’re going to need an awful lot of space to handle those lossless Police albums.

Samsung wants to sell 10 million 3D TVs this year, LG plans on 5 million

Here’s one way to solve a chicken-and-egg dilemma: crank out 15 million chickens. That’s seem to be the plan for Samsung and LG, anyway — Samsung plans to sell 10 million 3D TVs this year, up five times from the two million it sold last year, while LG plans to sell some 5 million. Now, it’s unclear whether this increase in sales will come as a result of consumer demand for 3D or simply because almost all new TVs will be 3D-capable, but we’re hoping that pesky 3D content problem will get a lot better once more people can actually view it — assuming anyone actually wants to wear the glasses, that is.

There was a time when you couldn’t go three years without having to shell out $300 for the latest and greatest videogame console, something with mind-blowing graphics and slight refreshes of the games you’d already bought twice before. Those days are past, with the Xbox 360 over five years old and the PlayStation 3 four, yet neither having any replacements in the wings. Perhaps this is partly why videogame hardware sales are declining, down eight percent in January compared to this time last year according to NPD. Software sales are meanwhile down five percent and we’re hearing reports that Mario is falling behind on payments for his Mediterranean villa. Maybe it’s’a time to downsize, big guy.

Nokia tells investors that 2011 and 2012 will be ‘transition years’

Wondering how long it will take for Nokia to fully execute on its new strategy? Here’s a clue in a press release targeting investors and financial analysts:

“Nokia expects 2011 and 2012 to be transition years, as the company invests to build the planned winning ecosystem with Microsoft. After the transition, Nokia targets longer-term: (1) Devices & Services net sales to grow faster than the market. (2) Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin to be 10% or more.”

There are many ways to interpret this, naturally. But the one we can’t get our minds around is that the Symbian and MeeGo houses were such a mess that they couldn’t be repaired by 2012, even after years of effort and huge investments directed towards that goal. And here we thought that MeeGo “inspired both confidence and excitement” while Symbian’s only issue was UI related.

Update: Stephen Elop says that he expects Nokia to ramp up the transition this year and be ready to ship Windows Phone 7 devices in significant volume in 2012.

Gartner and IDC dispute Android’s dominance over Symbian in Q4 2010

According to Gartner’s latest mobile sales numbers, the rise of Android hasn’t been quite as meteoric as you might think — even with 888.8 percent growth in 2010. Last month, Canalys quoted Android as the top earner for smartphone platforms in Q4 of last year, beating out Symbian for the top spot, but Gartner says it ain’t so. In fact, IDC already quietly chimed in on the topic a few days ago saying that Symbian was still the smartphone OS “market leader.” Gartner’s numbers do show Android overtaking Nokia’s Symbian devices in unit sales, but it points out that the OS’ use across a variety of brands in Q4 actually “kept Symbian slightly ahead of Android.” Symbian ultimately outsold Android by more than 44 million units last year, but considering the little green robot’s astronomical growth in 2010, we’d say even super star is an understatement.
