You scoff, but it’s true. Do you honestly think Tiger Woods has the luxury of looking down as his golf glove while on the Masters’ greens and seeing if his grip is too tight? Indeed he doesn’t, nor will he ever if we understand anything about PGA regulations. Germany’s own Sensosolutions has just revealed what it’s calling the planet’s first “digital golf glove,” with the $89 SensoGlove boasting a handful of sensors that “continuously read the user’s grip pressure.” In real-time, users are shown that data on the sweat-proof 1.2-inch LED monitor, and it’s even capable of outputting information via aural commands. Put simply, it can give you a warning if you’re exceeding your target grip pressure level, and it can even show you exactly which fingers are squeezing too tightly. What it can’t show you, however, is just how closely your wife is monitoring your extracurricular phone activities — but hey, there’s always version 2.0, right?

Silicon carbide sensors developed for transmitting inside volcanos

There’s one serious obstacle to volcano research: volcanos, like, shoot lava. Sure, you could aim a thermal camera at one from a safe distance, but where’s the fun in that? On the other hand, researchers at Newcastle University are developing silicon carbide-based components for a device that they say will be able to withstand 900° Celsius temperatures — just the thing to sense what’s going on inside a volcano and transmit the info in real-time. Not only will this allow researchers to better understand conditions leading up to an eruption, it might also someday signal an eruption before it occurs. “At the moment we have no way of accurately monitoring the situation inside a volcano,” says NU’s Dr. Alton Horsfall. “With an estimated 500 million people living in the shadow of a volcano this is clearly not ideal.” Since silicon carbide is more resistant to radiation than plain ol’ silicon, the tech can also be used inside nuclear power plants or even as radiation sniffers in places that might face a terror attack.

Leaf Aptus-II 12 snaps 80 megapixels of awesome on the back of your pro shooter

You ever wonder how CSI sleuths can keep enhancing their images all the way until they see what brand sneakers the perp is wearing? Well, they probably had a pre-release version of one of these Aptus-II 12s from Leaf. This new digital back can fill a staggering 80 million pixels with imaging data, thanks to its 53.7mm x 40.3mm-sized CCD sensor. It comes strapped with a 3.5-inch touchscreen on the back, 80 to 800 ISO range, 1.5 0.6fps capture rate, and a mind-boggling 480MB max file size per image. Should you have the imaging gear to match up to such might, you’ll want to know that the Aptus-II 12 is shipping now from Leaf Partners worldwide with a price tag just under €24,000 ($31,387), or you could grab the 12R version — which features a rotating sensor allowing you to shoot portrait shots without having to turn your camera sideways — for €31,995 ($41,850). That’s actually pretty decent value for your money, considering you’d have had to spend the same amount on the Aptus-II 10 only six months ago — and that only had a measly 56 megapixel sensor!

Ubuntu prototype uses face recognition to intelligently move UI elements (video)

Not that we haven’t seen mock-ups before for systems using webcams to intelligently move user interface elements, but it’s another thing entirely for a company to make a public proclamation that it’s tinkering with implementing something of the sort into a future build of its OS. Over at the Canonical design blog, one Christian Giordano has revealed that the company is in the early stages of creating new ways to interact with Ubuntu, primarily by using proximity and orientation sensors in order to have one’s PC react based on how they’re sitting, where they’re sitting and where their eyes / head are at. For instance — once a user fires up a video and leans back, said video would automatically go into fullscreen mode. Similarly, if a user walked away to grab some coffee and a notification appeared, that notification would be displayed at fullscreen so that he / she could read it from faraway. There’s no mention just yet on when the company plans to actually bring these ideas to end-users, but the video embedded after the break makes us long for “sooner” rather than “later.”

Samsung NX100 priced at $599+ for October release, NX10 gaining i-Function lens support in October

Samsung’s press event kicked things off here in Cologne, and Photokina 2010 just wouldn’t be Photokina 2010 without oodles of talk about mirrorless cameras. After talking up its NX100 for the better part of an hour, the company took a moment to answer a few questions from the crowd. The biggest news, however, was the unveiling of the price point. Up until now, Sammy has remained mum on how much its latest and greatest compact would run, but we were told the 20-50mm bundle would ship at some point in the near future for $599 (we’ve confirmed that it’ll ship in October), while the 20mm pancake lens bundle would go for $649.

In related news, last year’s NX10 will be gaining a huge level of functionality thanks to an October-bound firmware update, which will add full support for the company’s range of i-Function lenses. You heard right — the NX10 you splurged on last year will soon be able to play the same tap-and-scroll settings game as the NX100. Speaking of lenses, Samsung also confirmed that it would be willing to “provide technical information” to other companies in order for third-party i-Function lenses to be created. We didn’t get the impression that any other outfit had come forward with interest, but we couldn’t be happier to hear that there’s no walled garden surrounding the technology — particularly with how impressive it was during our initial NX100 hands-on.

Lastly, the company admitted that it’s hoping to have a 1080p model ready at some point in 2011, and it’s also hard at work on an APS-C sensor that’s better geared for low-light situations. Music to our ears, to say the least.

PlayStation Move gets broken down — so easy, an end-user could do it

Another week, another well-detailed tear down from the kids at iFixit. Blessed with an eight out of ten on the repairability index, the PlayStation Move was said to be one of the easiest devices yet to break down and reassemble, so there’s a good chance that any novice DIYer with a steady hand and a Phillips screwdriver could accomplish what’s shown in the link below. No huge surprises were found once the PCB’s clothing was removed, but we were told that the Move controller contains a great many components that are found in today’s modern smartphones: a processor, accelerometer, gyroscope, Bluetooth transmitter, vibrating motor, and even a MEMS compass. The sphere at the top can flash any color thanks to the included LEDs, and the integrated Li-ion battery can be disconnected (and thus, replaced) from the device without any soldering. UC Berkeley researchers craft ultra-sensitive artificial skin, robots dream of holding eggs

Researchers and engineers have been toiling on synthetic skins for years now, but most of ’em have run into one major problem: the fact that organic materials are poor semiconductors. In other words, older skins have required high levels of power to operate, and those using inorganic materials have traditionally been too fragile for use on prosthetics. Thanks to a team of researchers at UC Berkeley, though, we’re looking at a new “pressure-sensitive electronic material from semiconductor nanowires.” The new ‘e-skin’ is supposedly the first material made out of inorganic single crystalline semiconductors, and at least in theory, it could be widely used in at least two applications. First off, robots could use this skin to accurately determine how much force should be applied (or not applied, as the case may be) to hold a given object. Secondly, this skin could give touch back to those with artificial hands and limbs, though that would first require “significant advances in the integration of electronic sensors with the human nervous system. Dollars to donuts this gets tested on the gridiron when UCLA and / or Stanford comes to town.

Canon develops world’s largest CMOS sensor, shoots 60fps video in moonlight

Did you ever think that you’d see a CMOS sensor measuring 202 x 205 mm? That’s 7.95 x 8.07 inches to our fine imperial friends. Its impressive size — about 40 times larger than Canon’s largest commercial CMOS sensor — translates to staggering light-gathering capabilities, capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional DSLR. Better yet, the sensor is matched by new circuitry allowing for video capture at 60fps in just 0.3 lux of illumination (think full moon on a clear night). Unfortunately, the press release is more concerned with promoting Canon’s engineering prowess than with product launch. Nevertheless, we’re impressed.

Canon Creates 120-Megapixel Camera Sensor

In what’s a sure sign that the megapixel race in cameras is out of control, Canon has announced that it has developed a 120-megapixel image sensor.

That’s 13,280 x 9,184 pixels packed into a rectangle about 29 millimeters x 20 millimeters–or 1.4 inches x 0.7 inches . It’s the highest level of resolution in a sensor of its size, says Canon.

Most cameras today used either a CCD (charge-coupled device) sensor or a CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) sensor. Canon’s latest innovation is for a CMOS sensor.

The 120-megapixel sensor is about 7.5 times larger and offers a 2.4-fold improvement in resolution over Canon’s highest comparable commercial sensor. Canon’s highest-resolution commercial CMOS sensor is currently the EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR cameras. That sensor incorporates approximately 21.1 million pixels.

Cramming more pixels into a sensor is not necessarily indicative of the quality of the photos. Many consumers think more megapixels in a camera means better photos. But sometimes packing more light-sensitive pixels on a tiny sensor can result in greater noise in the photos. Cameras also require strong processing capabilities to take all the data from the sensors and translate into a beautiful picture.

With most CMOS sensors, camera makers use parallel processing to read data at high pixel counts. But that has to be balanced against problems such as signal delays and deviations in timing, all of which can affect image quality.

Canon has modified the method to control the readout circuit timing to get about 9.5 frames per second. This can support continuous shooting of ultra-high-resolution images, says Canon.

The newly developed CMOS sensor also includes full HD video (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) output capability.

For now, the 120-megapixel sensor is a proof-of-concept. It’s an engineering flight of fancy but it shows camera makers are trying to find ways to pack in greater capability into increasingly smaller sensors.
