Samsung Galaxy Tab’s WiFi-only version rumored to cost $399, arrive on April 4th

Shocking as it might be, we still haven’t had a Galaxy Tab from Samsung that rocks nothing but the WiFis, though that seems about to finally change. The 3G-deprived 7-inch Tab, promised for Q1 2011, has slipped on its schedule a little and looks set to now hit retail in the first week of April, at the admittedly appealing price of $399. Now, we all know the tablet market of April 2011 is shaping up to be extremely rich on machines with high specs, large screens and inflated opinions of themselves, but there could still be a fine little niche for an affordable, well built slate, even if it does only run on Froyo.

How would you change Dell’s Inspiron Duo?

We aren’t ones to knock a company for throwing convention to the wind, and frankly, we were downright excited to see how Dell’s Inspiron Duo would revolutionize our mobile lives. During our own review, we found the design to be top-notch and the build quality to be world-class, but the sluggish performance, annoying software overlay and lackluster UI didn’t exactly earn it any brownie points. Enough about us, though — this is your time to shine. If you bit the bullet and picked one of these multifaceted laptops up, we’re interested in hearing how you’d change things. Would you ditch the swiveling LCD? Would you prefer a dual-boot setup as found on the ViewPad 10? How’s the hardware standing up over time? Would you have rather seen AMD’s Fusion platform take the place of Intel’s Atom? Speak out in comments below, won’t you?

If you’ve been dying to get your hands on an iPad 2, but didn’t have the forethought or wherewithal to stand in line for one, then get ready to wait, because Apple’s online store is showing delays of up two to three weeks for the slate. You can go ahead and order one now, but there’s a chance you won’t get your hands on the slab until April — unless, of course, one of these guys is waiting in line to buy you a gift.

iPad 2 goes on sale tomorrow: 5PM local time in stores, 1AM PT online

For those living under a rock or in a place with really terrible connectivity, Apple has just dished out a reminder with the full details of its iPad 2 launch tomorrow. Yes, it’s in stores tomorrow. The second coming of Apple’s tablet will be available to buy from 5PM in your local timezone at Apple Retail Stores, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless outlets. Apple’s own store experience comes with the bonus of a free Personal Setup service to get that tablet looking and acting just how you want it. The brick-and-mortar action will be preceded by a 1AM Pacific Time online ordering option, though clearly the fastest way to obtain an iPad 2 of your own will be to get in line and wait it out at your nearest store — we’re hearing some lines have already started forming, people are turning this thing into a sport.

Hulu Plus on TiVo apparently being tested, live streaming to iPad apparently being considered

So, an update. Er, a refresher if you will. Back in September of last year, TiVo announced that ingrained Hulu Plus access would be coming to its DVRs “in the coming months,” but we’ve heard precisely nothing on the matter ever since. Enter the present. We’ve got a tipster who owns a TiVo Premiere and was just invited to join a Field Trial to “test Hulu Plus on TiVo,” and he’s also receiving codes to receive a free month of service. It’s hard to say what kind of gap we’re looking at between the testing period and the go-live period, but at least we’ve got a little assurance that no one simply forgot about their promise. In related news, other tipsters are starting to receive some fairly interesting surveys from TiVo itself, with a few questions in particular asking consumers how they’d feel about the option to “stream live TV, DVR recordings and TV shows from a cable company’s On Demand library to one’s iPad.” This seemingly includes in-home and remote streaming, and we have to say — streaming to the tablet just might be the magic feature that finally gets TiVo out of the hurt locker. Probably not, but are you really going to judge us for being blindly optimistic?

ViewSonic’s dual-booting Android / Windows 7 ViewPad 10 tablet now shipping

It sure took ’em long enough, but ViewSonic’s dual-booting ViewPad 10 has finally, really, actually made it to America. A few days after the iPad 2 most likely sucked any remaining wind out of its sails, mind you, but it’s quite possible that the target market for an Android 1.6 + Windows 7 tablet couldn’t care less about a similar one from Apple. If you’ll recall, this one’s rocking a 10.1-inch touchpanel (1024 x 600), 1.66GHz Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a version of Android we forgot about in 1994. You’ll also find a microSD slot and a copy of Windows Home 7 Premium (with a 16GB SSD) or Windows 7 Professional (with a 32GB SSD). Still interested? Just wait until we tell you all about the $599 and $679 price tags, respectively.

P.S. – Yeah, that’s OS X shown running on the ViewPad 10 above. No, it won’t actually do that in real life.

ODROID-A tablet fits 1366 x 768 res on a 10-inch screen, dual-core Exynos inside transparent shell

Samsung might not have quite enough Exynos 4210 processors to sell a tablet of its own based on that Cortex-A9 dual-core beastie, but it’s found a few to hand over to Korean partner Hardkernel for this here ODROID-A reference platform. It’s strictly a dev kit, and as such is unlikely to find its way to your local Best Buy any time soon, but we have to admire the specs on offer. First up is the delightfully dense 1366 x 768 resolution, a rare sight on a 10-inch display, followed by a transparent rear panel that bests anything out on the market right now in terms of sheer sex appeal, and then there are also two MicroSD slots, a HSPA+ modem, HDMI output, a USB 2.0 port, cameras on the front and rear, and a crazy 9000mAh battery. How all this is supposed to only cost $750, we don’t know, but then we also don’t know how to qualify to get one when it becomes available later this month. So many mysteries. Motorola will upgrade your Xoom to 4G LTE — even if you’ve rooted it

Happy news for Android tinkerers everywhere — Motorola has officially confirmed it will attempt to perform its 4G upgrade on all Verizon Wireless-riding Xoom tablets it receives from users, whether they’ve been rooted, repainted, or accessorized with fluffy dice. Naturally, the company can’t guarantee successful software updates on devices that have had their OS tweaked, so it asks users to be kind and rewind to the original firmware state. For those unwilling to stretch that far back, Moto will still give it a shot and says that it’ll install the 4G LTE modem at a minimum. What a refreshingly open-minded attitude. Now if Moto could give us an open-minded bootloader on its phones as well, we’d be all set.

Olivetti launches OliPad tablet, second coming of the typewriter?

It’s a sign of the times: a company originally known for typewriters, and struggling to find its place in a tech-driven market, turns to manufacturing tablets. This week, Olivetti announced the release of the OliPad, staking its claim to a slice of the slab pie, and repositioning itself on the enterprise PC market. Heralded (at least by Olivetti) as Italy’s first tablet, the OliPad sports a 10-inch screen, 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth connectivity, NVIDIA Tegra 2, Android 2.2.2, and a 1024 x 600 display. It also features USB and HDMI ports and a 1.3 megapixel camera, but perhaps most telling is the simultaneous launch of the Application Warehouse, “a virtual storehouse of configurable and customizable software applications designed by Olivetti specifically for business and government.” Considering the vast and varied competition, we’d say sticking to what it knows — and Olivetti knows business solutions — is probably a safe bet. Now, if they could just make the thing look as good as the Olivetti Valentine… The OliPad goes on sale this Monday for €399. Full PR after the break.

Samsung says Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still on schedule, iPad 2 be darned

Samsung may have been humbled by Apple’s iPad 2, but the company’s apparently not letting that affect its plans — without directly refuting statements by a Samsung VP that the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 was “inadequate” or might be priced cheaper than originally intended, the company told the Yonhap News Agency that the tablet will be released on schedule. In other words, the Honeycomb tablet’s not getting any thinner or lighter, but something’s gotta give, and Samsung’s not quite ready to say just what that is.
