HTC Hero (GSM) Android 2.1 update finally arrives… in Taiwan

In its day, the HTC Hero with its brand new Sense UI and browser with Flash Lite was a breakthrough, multitouch Android handset. As such, it quickly became a big seller for HTC and the carriers that sold it. Now one year later, owners of the GSM variant are still waiting for their chance at the latest Android 2.1 update. As a harbinger of things to come (we hope), the Hero 2.1 update just landed in HTC’s home country of Taiwan. Unfortunately, this will likely be the last update Hero owners receive… via official channels, anyway.

[Thanks, Lee]

Sony Dash software update adds USB playback by month’s end

Looks like Sony will be dishing out a new software update to Dash owners shortly. The first over-the-air update for Sony’s Personal Internet Viewer is expected to arrive at the end of the month carrying a number of usability and feature enhancements according to a Sony email sent to Dash owners. These include MP3 playback and picture viewing off USB, a full-screen app theme, and enhanced alarm functionality like adjustable snooze duration and one-touch alarm dismissal. Sony’s also promising new themes and additional internet radio options in a June update. Too bad Sony can’t deliver the device a battery and faster processor OTA but hey, free software is free. See the full contents of the Sony email after the break.

[Thanks Doug S.]

Nokia updates N900 to version 1.2 in UK, closes door on MeeGo

You’ve overclocked it and hacked it to run OS X and Android, now you can return your N900 to its native Maemo 5 OS with the launch of a version 1.2 software update. The V10.2010.19-1 bump now available in the UK (global on Wednesday) packs several enhancements including face-to-face video calling, improved Ovi Maps, and a better email experience with bundled Facebook IM Chat and the ability to accept or decline event invitations from the inbox. You’ll also see a number of new games when the Ovi Store switches over on Thursday.

And after much speculation, Nokia’s also admitting that MeeGo will not be officially supported on the N900 once the Intel / Nokia OS is device ready. Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo OS, however, as demonstrated by today’s update. Regardless, we’re sure that the N900’s active fan-base will deliver a MeeGo update outside of official channels, especially since the N900 is already being used as a platform for ARM-based MeeGo development.

[Thanks, Pasu]

Motorola expects Android 2.2 update to hit Droid ‘in the near future’

Hearing Google say that Android 2.2 would be filtering out to the Nexus One in short order was no huge shock — after all, it’s Google’s first smartphone. But for those who purchased Motorola’s first heavy-hitter since the RAZR, it looks as if they’ll be close behind in enjoying the spoils. According to a Motorola spokesperson quoted at Slashgear (full statement is past the break), the company is expecting the original Droid to get Android 2.2 “in the near future,” though he / she wouldn’t go so far as to provide specifics beyond that. Better still, the same person stated that Motorola is excited about Froyo in general, and it’s “looking forward to integrating it on [the firm’s] Android-based devices as [the software] is made available.” We hate to read too deeply into anything, but “devices” sure gets our digits tingling.

[Thanks, Alex]

Amazon’s Kindle 2.5 software update begins to roll out

We knew it was destined for a late-May release, and it looks as if Amazon’s going to make its deadline after all. Following a preview of the 2.5 software update a few weeks back, we’ve got pictorial proof that the new code is being pushed out as we speak. This particular unit is a Kindle DX, and it’s not hesitant in showing off the social networking features we were promised. Feel free to poke around in the gallery below, and then fire up your own Kindle to see if you’ve received an OTA surprise. Let us know either way in comments below, won’tcha?

Apple promises to fix iPad WiFi issues in future software update

Not satisfied with Apple’s previous “fixes” for those pesky WiFi issues with the iPad? Then it looks like the folks in Cupertino have you covered, or will soon — the company recently updated its support document on the issue to say that “Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update.” Interestingly, Apple also now suggests adjusting the screen brightness if you’re experiencing the problem, which is a fix that was previously discovered by some users on their own but not recommended by Apple. Still no ETA on that software update, of course, but you can find the rest of Apple’s troubleshooting suggestions at the link below in the meantime.

Sonos update turns wireless S5 speaker into a premium ‘stereo pair’

The ZonePlayer S5 launch was an important milestone for Sonos as it attempts to bring down the cost (and raise the appeal) of its excellent whole-home music delivery system. Now we’ve got a bit of good news for those of you who already picked up a few of the $399 all-in-one wireless speakers we reviewed back in October. A 3.2 software update for the Sonos controller and iPod touch / iPhone apps will be released sometime this month letting you assign left and right audio channels to a pair of S5 speakers. The result should be impressive since the portable units can already easily fill the average room with sound on their own. The update will provide owners of multiple S5s with a temporary option for parties, especially if you decide to take the show outdoors… assuming you can still celebrate knowing that you’re listening to two-channel audio on $800 worth of speakers. Hey, at least the software update is free.

Kindle version 2.5 update gets Facebooked and Twitterized

Amazon just announced a 2.5 software update for its Kindle and Kindle DX readers. At the moment, it’s rolling out the update to a “limited group” of Kindle users with a general release coming at the end of May. Enhancements include the ability to organize books and documents into “collections,” pan and zoom within PDFs, Kindle password protection, larger and sharper fonts, and just what you’ve always wanted: the ability to “share book passages with friends on Facebook and Twitter.” Somebody pinch us.

WebOS 1.4.1.1 now available for Verizon subscribers

Hardly the most exciting Palm news you’re gonna hear this week, but the company that still owns itself for the time being has just updated its WebOS software on Verizon to the extremely granular version 1.4.1.1. The helpful changelog informs us there are no new apps, but pinch-zoom now works correctly in Doc and PDF views, a lag in the camera shutter sound has been rectified, and forwarding videos uploaded to YouTube on to your friends via email has also been made to work as it should. The most important fix of all, though, is to a keyboard input issue whereby a single key press would generate a letter twice — both Pre Central and one of our readers report that this problem appears to have been consigned to the past. Good stuff, now let’s see it go global, shall we?

[Thanks, subzero and Sam F.]

Nokia E72 gets white paint option, firmware update

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more direct competitor to the BlackBerry businessphone hegemony than Nokia’s E7x series. It’s therefore quite logical that only a day after RIM chief Mike Lazaridis made the white Bold official, Nokia is following up with its own pale-hued E72. Coming with a skinned UI to match the externals, the new handset is being announced alongside a firmware update (for E72s of all colors and creeds) that updates Ovi Maps, improves social networking integration, and allows location sharing through Facebook. You know, for when you wanna let your hair down after a hard day at the office. Internet radio of an unspecified variety has been included as well, along with general performance and stability improvements. Both the white handset and new firmware are available through Nokia today.
