Image Slideshow Extension for Firefox: AutoSlideshow

This article was written on January 29, 2007 by CyberNet.

Here’s another Firefox Extension for you to try out!  It’s called AutoSlideshow, and  allows you to view a slideshow of images on any web page.  I tried it out on a post that we did for the Object Desktop Review/Giveaway.  There were quite a few pictures on the page, so I figured it would be a good candidate. It worked well.

First, you’ll need to go here to download the extension.  After you’ve installed it, you’ll notice a toolbar up at the top that will have all of the buttons you need for getting the slideshow started.  Press the slideshow button on any web page that has images, and linked images (only if they’re in pure html), and the show will begin.

There are a few options that you can adjust to customize the extension.  One of the first that you might want to change is how quickly the next image will appear.  The default is 3 seconds which may be too long or too short for your liking. There are also options for the crossfade effects.  You can either set it fade in/fade out, zoom in, or random.

Within the options, there is one change that you’ll probably want to make.  Go up to tools, and then click on Add-ons. Under the ‘Images’ tab, you’ll want to un-check to zoom small images to windows size.  If the box is checked, it will stretch the images to fit your browser. If you have a large browser window because of a large monitor, it will really distort the image.

This extension has special support for web sites like Wikipedia, Google, and Yahoo, particularly the image pages on Google and Yahoo. Here are a few links that you can try it out on, I included a CyberNet article so you can see how it works with blogs:

I found it to be a really useful extension that could possibly save you some time, and even a few mouse clicks. Remember, it will only work with images that have html tags.

Nokia releases Symbian update for N8, C7 and C6-01, it’s not the one you’ve been waiting for

What we once knew as Symbian^3 was simplified into “just Symbian” a few months back, ostensibly to make updates faster and easier for Nokia to execute. Well, huzzah huzzah, here’s your first update. Version 1.1 of the new Symbian enhances communications by allowing you to accept meeting requests straight from an email and also integrating maps so that you may view the location as well. Besides that, N8 users get killer new features in Quick Office 6.4 like zooming in and out of Word documents along with three “high quality” games preloaded on new devices (which were already freely available in the Ovi Store). Excuse our overwhelming sense of disenfranchisement, but where the hell is our portrait QWERTY keyboard, split-screen text input, or those much-needed browser improvements? In the rubbish bin next to Symbian^4?

Chronic Dev Team unleashes greenpois0n, untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1

It’s finally here, folks. The Chronic Dev Team has put out the latest version of greenpois0n that allows you to free your iDevice running 4.2.1. What’s different about this jailbreak? Glad you asked. This time ’round, the program will let you perform an untethered jailbreak — you can finally reboot the device without having to re-jailbreak. Be warned though — this build was rushed out and we haven’t tested any devices on our end. At the time of this writing, the software is only available for Mac. Oh, and unlockers, don’t update to 4.2.1 if you plan on swapping sim cards in the future. Hit the source link to get started.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Windows Vista RC2 Expected Friday

This article was written on October 03, 2006 by CyberNet.

Vista Logo It seems like Microsoft is releasing a new build of Windows Vista every week now. I guess that is what you get when they are nearing the final homestretch. Vista RC2 (build 5743) will be the replacement to Vista 5728 that was just opened to the public a few weekends ago. The new release is currently being tested internally and should be available on Friday.

Vista RC2 will be open to the public for downloading but it will be limited just as Vista 5728 was. I’m sure it will be available for a few days but you should still try to make sure you’re one of the first to download it.

Microsoft Will be finalizing Vista sometime between October 25 and November 8 so that it is ready for businesses in November. Another interesting point that Paul Thurrott pointed out was that there are still 1400 known bugs in Vista which definitely sounds like a lot. However, there was nearly 2500 bugs less than 10 days ago! That goes to show that the Microsoft Windows team is working hard to make the release as stable as possible.

KwiClick: Faster Searching in Firefox

This article was written on May 22, 2009 by CyberNet.

kwiclick.jpg

I’m always on the lookout for a good Firefox extension, and I got an email the other day about one I’ve really fallen in love with. It’s called KwiClick, and it does exactly what I look for in an extension… it stays out of my way until I need it, and when I do use it I get the results I want.

So what’s KwiClick do? Basically it displays a nice little floating window that is capable of showing search results from sites like Google, YouTube, FriendFeed, Twitter, Google Maps, Flickr, Wikipedia, Amazon, Technorati, Viddler, Yahoo, del.icio.us, and more. You can even pin the floating window so that it will remain on top while you browse around. The example they give where this could be handy is for browsing the web while wanting to watch a video at the same time. You can open up a YouTube video in KwiClick, and pin the window so that it will remain open even while you browse in the background. Very slick!

Personally I love it for the mapping capabilities. As you can see in the screenshot above you can highlight an address, open KwiClick, and have a map instantly slide out from the side of the screen. I love the fact that it’s extremely unobtrusive since the window will disappear as soon as you click back on the website, well, unless you pin the window.

The developers have definitely gone out of their way to make this as useful as it can be, and I’m impressed with how they were able to stray away from making this more annoying than helpful. It seems like all the other extensions with similar features get in the way more than anything else, but this one is definitely different. Job well done guys!

Skifta Android app nabs DLNA certification: tablets and smartphones now streaming to STBs and more

Using your Android phone as a remote is hardly new, but using it to actually send content to a TV-connected set-top box? Now that’s a novel concept. Skifta for Android has just become the first piece of software to be certified by the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) under its new Software Certification program, enabling any Android-based smartphone or tablet to stream onboard media to any DLNA source, including TVs, stereos, PCs and Sony’s PS3. It’s hard to say what kind of phone (and what kind of bandwidth) will be needed for this to actually be an enjoyable experience, but those curious to find out can download the app for free in the Android Marketplace… provided you’re using a device with Android 2.2 (Froyo) or higher, of course. Head on past the break for a explanatory video.

Computer Maintenance From TechSpot

TechSpot is back at it with another Windows XP Tweaking guide to help maximize your system’s performance. After awhile your computer will feel like it is not as fast as it used to be, but this should help regain some of that loss. What TechSpot says about this guide:

There are several components to the Windows memory subsystem. For the most part this guide will be targeting the Hard Drive, CPU, and RAM, optimally configuring these along the way, and clearing up many of the placebos surrounding memory management in XP.

Microsoft releases H.264 plug-in for Google Chrome, vows to support WebM video in IE9

Hard to believe that the infamous “fragmentation” term is now being bandied about in the web browser world, but sure enough, it’s Microsoft using the term today to describe the brave new realm we’re living in. If you’ll recall, Google defended its decision to not include H.264 support natively in Chrome, but maintained that WebM plug-ins were coming to Safari and Internet Explorer 9. Today, Microsoft’s kinda-sorta returning the favor. Following the outfit’s release of a Firefox add-on to bring full H.264 support to Windows machines, the outfit is releasing a plug-in for Chrome (only the Windows version for now) that provides support for H.264. Furthermore, it’s committed to supporting third-party WebM video plug-ins; to quote, users “will be able to play WebM video in IE9.” It’s fairly obvious that Microsoft’s taking this golden opportunity to push its browser as one that supports everything (rather than just its own preferred format), but regardless of the motives, we’re just happy to see differences put aside and compatibility finding priority.

Notion Ink apps ported over to Viewsonic G-Tablet, promise not to brick it too

Norton Ink apps ported over to Viewsonic G-Tablet, promise not to brick it too

A few lucky souls managed to get their Notion Ink Adams early — only to have them brick themselves. The rest were delayed and, well, it’s all a bit of a mess. Now there’s another way to get a taste of Ink but on some currently available hardware. User gojimi over at the inimitable xda-developers forums has ported seven applications from the Notion Ink suite to Viewsonic’s G-Tablet, including the Calendar, Keyboard, QuickOffice, and the Browser. Some don’t run perfectly and we have to say that’s something of an unfortunate target, but gojimi does indicate it should be easy to move them to any other ROM. So, you know, make it happen!
