Yahoo App Search, AppSpot make sense of App Store and Android Market

It’s a common problem, really. You crack open your app haven of choice, stumble around for a few moments, and back out in frustration — it’s yet another round of Angry Birds instead of toying with something new. If Yahoo has its way, said scenario will no longer be a part of your routine, with the company’s App Search wizardry aiming to nix the guesswork so often associated with finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. It’ll be available on the PC (and momentarily, for iPhone and Android platforms), and will differ from those other app search alternatives by providing an all-in-one place that combines description, price, overall star rating from users, and screenshots. It’ll also pester you with daily, personalized recommendations of the iPhone and Android apps you should consider based on the apps you’ve downloaded, but only if you’re into that kind of thing. Head on past the break for the full spill, and feel free to Ctrl+F for the good stuff.

Miro’s Free Video Converter

This article was written on April 15, 2010 by CyberNet.

miro video converter.pngarrow Windows Windows; Mac Mac arrow
Over the last few years I’ve written about several video converters, but I always felt that none of them offered the simplicity that they I know they should. I’ve found some that I’ve really liked, but how many people want to mess with the nitty gritty details when they want to throw a video on a mobile device? The creators of the open source Miro application felt the same way, and decided that they should come up with their own app to address this.

The Miro Video Converter is the simplest video conversion utility that I’ve ever used. The interface of the app only has two areas: one where you drag-and-drop the file you want to convert, and another where you select the kind of device you want to put the video on. The supported devices include:

  • Droid
  • Nexus One
  • G1
  • Magic / myTouch
  • Droid Eris
  • HTC Hero
  • Cliq
  • Behold
  • iPhone
  • iPod Touch
  • iPod Classic
  • iPod Nano
  • PSP

What kind of video files is it able to convert? Miro Video Converter supports AVI, H264, MOV, WMV, XVID, Theora, MKV, and FLV. Needless to say that covers all of the most popular formats, and is what makes this so useful. Go ahead and grab it if you have videos you want optimized for your mobile device.

Download Vista SP2 Beta via Windows Update

This article was written on October 30, 2008 by CyberNet.

vista sp2.jpgIf you like to stay on the bleeding edge of technology (and you’re running Vista) you may want to consider modifying two registry keys on your system so that you can participate in the Vista SP2 Beta program. To join the program all you have to do is download this batch file, and run it on your Vista machine as an administrator. Then just check for available Windows Updates (it may take 30 minutes or so for it to show up in the Windows Updates).

Think carefully whether you want to do this or not. There will likely be some bugs that could cause problems with your system, but at the very least it will cause Vista to expire on 4/2/2010 (or around then). Plus it will place the “Evaluation copy” message on your desktop wallpaper. You can always uninstall Vista SP2 to remove the evaluation message and expiration date, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you try to install it.

So what’s new in Vista SP2? Here’s a brief rundown that the Vista blog provided last week:

  • Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches.
  • Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology.
  • Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista.
  • Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration.
  • Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones.

Windows Vista SP2 is expected to be released in final form sometime in the first half of 2009. Judging by the expiration date of Vista SP2 Beta I’d say that sounds about right.

More Ways Emerge To Make XP Look Like Vista

More Ways Emerge To Make XP Look Like Vista

Gizmodo put together a guide that shows people what they can do to make their Windows XP machine look like Windows Vista. The main software that they mention is Style XP which skins Windows XP to look like Vista. You don’t want to forget to grab TopDesk because that is the ULTIMATE Alt-Tab replacement and does a great job of simulating Vista’s new Flip-3D feature.

There is also the Vista Transformation Pack 4 available for those people looking for an all-in-one package that will transform your XP machine. A lot of people have commented on the software so make sure to read through them to see if it is right for you. More than 50,000 people have downloaded it from CyberNet.

Lastly, there is always WindowBlinds. I personally think that this software does the best job and the transparency effects are the best. Also, if you are looking for a skin for WindowBlinds that looks like Vista then Jemaho has the skin for you! It is absolutely amazing…in fact, it is so good that Microsoft has forced him to remove the skin before. He posted this new version just about 10 days ago so make sure you get it before Microsoft makes him remove this one, too! I guess Microsoft thought the skin was a little too close for comfort.

HTC pulls a 180, now says Gingerbread is coming to Desire

So, here’s the tally: as of June 14th, there’s just “not enough memory” in the Desire for Gingerbread to run properly. As of the 15th, however, there is. We won’t pretend to understand what changed so drastically in the past 24 hours, but what is clear is that the aforesaid handset maker is listening to its most demanding of users. While it’s safe to assume that the Average Joe (or Jane) wouldn’t be able to recognize the difference between Android 2.2 and 2.3, folks clamoring for the update seem to have coerced the company to make things work. In other words, it looks like the update is back on… now it’s just a matter of making it run well. Kudos HTC, and godspeed.

[Thanks, Frederik]

Droid 2 Global gets Gingerbread, customizable dock and more in latest update from Verizon

Droid 2 Global users, your moment in the Gingerbread sun has arrived. Verizon’s put up a page with download instructions for a 103MB update, taking your QWERTY slider from version 2.4.330 to 4.5.600. Updating isn’t the most taxing of activities, you just look for a system update in the About Phone menu and then give your blessing for the download to commence. VZW will also be prompting tardy users to take their OTA medicine in due course. So what’s new apart from Android 2.3? Well, the big change is that the previously static phone, contacts and apps icons at the bottom of the UI have now been turned into a user-customizable dock, with three links of your choosing sidling up next to the App Launcher. There’s also a freshened up UI look, a Download Manager App, user-definable App Groups, encryption for data both on the device and its SD card, improvements in battery life while using WiFi and Bluetooth, and the obligatory stability fixes. If all that sounds irresistible and you have the requisite phone in hand, go get it!

[Thanks, Jon]

9 Screenshots Of Firefox 2.0′s New Preferences

This article was written on July 06, 2006 by CyberNet.

When I was in the Firefox Build’s forum today I noticed that they are looking for testers to try out the new Firefox Preferences. They currently only have it implemented on the Trunk build because it isn’t exactly complete. Things like the new feed reader preferences are not adjustable in this build yet. Waldo, the person implementing the new feature, is looking for feedback on errors that people may have and said “I’ll be watching [the forum] closer than people watched the Superbowl halftime show in 2004.” The target goal is to have this implemented into Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 which is scheduled for release on July 11.

Update:
It looks like Mozilla just updated the status page and they pushed this back to Beta 2. It is just too unstable to put in such a big milestone at this point.

Alright, here are the screenshots of what it looks like right now:

9 Screenshots Of Firefox 2.0's New Preferences

The Main Options page here has actually changed quite a bit. It has inherited preferences from other pages such as the “Downloads”. Notice that Downloads no longer has its own page.

This is the Tabs page and is pretty much the same except it is now located as the second item in the order of pages (It was fourth before).

The Content page now has the feed options that were on the Main Options page before. This page is also supposed to have the “File Types” on it except that it gets cutoff on the bottom.

Ahhh, the Privacy page. Have you noticed the differences yet? This change is probably the most significant because there is no longer 6 tabs to change your Privacy options. Now it is all located on one single page and some of the options have gone to different pages!

The Security page has gotten a lot of its content from what used to be on the Advanced page. It now has the anti-phishing settings and the password management features.

9 Screenshots Of Firefox 2.0's New Preferences

There aren’t really any changes on the Advanced->General page.

9 Screenshots Of Firefox 2.0's New Preferences

The Advanced->Network page is new. It has all of the connection settings for Firefox and how large you want your cache to be.

The Advanced->Update page is the still the same.

The Advanced->Encryption page is pretty much what the Advanced->Security page used to be. The only difference is that it lost the Warning Messages section that is now located on the Security page.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed what the future of Firefox will bring to us! For those of you who want to test the unstable Firefox 3.0 (codename Minefield) there is a Windows, Linux, and Mac version with the new Preference pages in it. Hopefully we will see this implemented in Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 on Tuesday!

Promote Opera Mini With 3 Great Banners

This article was written on December 15, 2006 by CyberNet.

Opera Mini Banners

So you are an Opera Mini addict and you want to know how to share your addiction with the rest of the world? No problem, there are three great banners that you can choose from to post on your own website. Of the three available there surely has to be one that you like.

Opera Watch has large-scale versions of the three banners along with another promotional image that I didn’t post here (it involves Bill Gates promoting Opera ;) ). I guess these aren’t anything new but I haven’t seen them before and they gave me a good chuckle, so I had to share them with you. The person who made them must have some extreme creativity.

If you use your cellphone to browse the Internet then you should definitely use Opera Mini. I haven’t used it myself because I don’t have the Internet on my phone, but I have seen it in action and the amount of time that it will save you will be enormous. You don’t realize how productive such a small browser can be until you try Opera Mini.

Critical Upgrade Available for WordPress 2.1.1 Users!

This article was written on March 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

Wordpress LoginI normally don’t post about about WordPress upgrades, but this one is extremely important for anyone running version 2.1.1 that was just released a few days ago. Apparently a hacker got access to the WordPress.org server and inserted some malicious code into the download:

It was determined that a cracker had gained user-level access to one of the servers that powers wordpress.org, and had used that access to modify the download file. We have locked down that server for further forensics, but at this time it appears that the 2.1.1 download was the only thing touched by the attack. They modified two files in WP to include code that would allow for remote PHP execution.

This is the kind of thing you pray never happens, but it did and now we’re dealing with it as best we can. Although not all downloads of 2.1.1 were affected, we’re declaring the entire version dangerous and have released a new version 2.1.2 that includes minor updates and entirely verified files.

It’s unfortunate that this happened several days ago because a large number of people have already downloaded it, but I guess we should just be grateful that it was caught now and not weeks from now. I wonder how many people this ended up affecting?

Download the new WordPress 2.1.2
