US judge won’t return seized URL to Rojadirecta.com, absolutamente no

Welcome to the homepage of popular sports streaming and p2p site Rojadirecta.com. Why all the birdy logos and harsh words about going to prison? Well, it’s a convoluted story, which began when a whole bunch of sports sites — including Rojadirecta — were summarily seized by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, based on “probable cause to believe” they’d been involved in copyright infringement. Awkwardly, the Spanish owners of this particular site had already been cleared of any wrongdoing by courts in Spain, but this counted for nada because their .com URL was American. So, their one hope was to convince a US judge that the seizure violated the First Amendment and should be overturned. This case won support from freedom of speech activists like the Electronic Frontier Foundation, but on Thursday it finally failed. The presiding judge ruled that no rights had been violated, because Rojadirecta could easily set up shop at a non-US address and continue to function. Bad news indeed for the Spaniards — maybe they should move to the UK, where due process takes a whole lot longer.

Motorola considering Nike+ SportWatch contender?

It looks like Motorola might be prepping to give the Nike+ SportWatch a run for its money. An intrepid tipster sent along a screenshot from a recent survey showing off what looks like a tricked out nano watch. Described as an “all-in-one fitness and music personal fitness device” (redundant much?) that packs a GPS for “accurate performance tracking,” the as of yet unnamed gadget also sports a “smart music player” that compiles a list of songs based on the tunes that help you sweat your best. It also lets you wirelessly sync to your PC for workout analysis, and apparently does the same for Android devices. Among the possible names listed in the survey is the MotoActive, hinting at, but certainly not pinning down, Motorola branding. Of course this is just an online survey, so we wouldn’t get too excited about your new running mate just yet.

[Thanks, Anon]

Drift Innovation unveils compact Drift HD, still up for your extreme antics (video)

Fan of recording extreme death-defying stunts, yet find your current helmet cam just too darn unwieldy? Drift’s creatively named Drift HD might fit the bill, as the firm’s managed to cram the 170-degree field of view rotatable lens / LCD combo from the HD170, into a 25 percent smaller package. The nine megapixel 1080p shooter also features a bevy of redesigned mounts, a replaceable lens and support for 32GB microSD cards, allowing it to keep chuggin’ where lesser cameras would have otherwise called it quits. Connectivity junkies will also swoon at the inclusion of micro-HDMI and a 2.5mm microphone input. We weren’t exactly smitten with the HD170, but this $369 makeover might be enough to change our minds. If you’re dying to find out for yourself, the Drift HD will be available August 31st, but do us a favor and keep your eyes on the snow — we wouldn’t want you to end up like this guy.

T-Mobile looks to go back-to-back, offers Angels fans tablet rentals

Looking to enhance that in-person baseball experience with one more technological distraction? Well, the wait is over, thanks to T-Mobile and its new tablet rental program at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. The company will not only offer the slates to patrons, but it’ll also push out customized content to enhance the superfan’s game-day stat overload — something we’ve seen before over at Safeco Field. Fans get to choose between a T-Mobile G-Slate or a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and the rental will only set you back a cool Hamilton, which is likely easier on the wallet than a decked-out hotdog. In addition to the tablet, you’ll also get your game-day program, a library of magazines for browsing between innings, T-Mobile TV and network access. So if you’re the casual baseball fan who scored free tickets, you can work on your Cut the Rope skills for a few hours… looking up to catch the home run jacks, of course.

Contour brings viewfinder app to Android, goes with you where we won’t

What do extreme sports, helmet cams, and little green robots have in common? Not much before today, but Contour’s gone and changed all that by releasing an Android version of its iOS app — you know, the one we first got our grubby paws on back at CES. Just like its Cupertino-blessed counterpart, the El Goog variant allows future X Games wannabees to use their phones as a viewfinder for those who possess a Contour+ or ContourGPS. We assume the ability to peep at the camera’s battery life and how much memory remains also helps as you shred some epic, radical mountain, bro. If you’ve got either cam handy and a slab of Android in your pocket, tap the source link and take your cinematic skills to new, gnarly heights.

Sony outs water-resistant Walkman NWZ-W260, is about to launch new high-end models

As far as unusual designs go, Sony’s been having one productive week. First the tablet team showed off the funky S1 (and funkier S2) and today Walkman’s managed to grab our attention. The outfit just announced the NWZ-W260 series, a music player baked directly into a pair of lightweight headphones — all told, a bolder setup than this. In case it wasn’t already obvious, Sony has its eyes set on the sweaty, gym-going type, and to sweeten the deal it’s coated the player in a water-resistant finish. It’s rated for up to eight hours of battery life, and also packs a quick charging technology that would allow you to rebound to an hour’s capacity after just three minutes. The included software, meanwhile, allows you to drag and drop tracks from Windows Media Player and iTunes for Windows — so long as they’re not DRM-protected, ‘o course. It’ll go on sale next month, with a 2GB version (the NWZ-W262) fetching $59.99 and a 4GB number (NWZ-W263) going for $79.99.

Meanwhile, it’s clear Sony’s got some more players coming at the higher end of its lineup. The company just pushed four A860 series Walkmans through the FCC, with capacities ranging from 8GB to 64GB — a new high for Sony. CNET has also been chatting up sources who say the player will have a large OLED screen, noise-canceling technology, and Bluetooth 2.0. Meanwhile, FCC documents also show Sony is prepping a pair of S760 series players with either 8GB or 16GB of storage, an LCD screen for video playback, and Bluetooth. As CNET notes, Amazon jumped the gun and listed them in Europe with converted prices of $225 to $494 for the A series and $182 to $211 for the S series. How much will they actually cost once they arrive stateside? Looks like we’ll find out soon.

DARwin-OP, CHARLI-2 humanoids make history at RoboCup 2011, ‘U-S-A!’ chants ensue (video)

While most American sports fans were busy celebrating a World Cup victory over Brazil this weekend, an indubitably more compelling soccer tournament was drawing to a close in Istanbul — site of RoboCup 2011. Virginia Tech’s Team DARwin made history at this year’s event, becoming the first US squad to bring home top honors in both the Kid Size and Adult Size competitions. The petite DARwin-OP humanoid danced circles around the lightweight class, while the five-foot CHARLI-2 demoralized Robo Erectus in the big boys’ final with a last-minute penalty kick. In its international debut, the CHARLI-2 (pictured, in a moment of Zen, on the right) also earned the vaunted Louis Vuitton Humanoid Cup, ending a nine-year period dominated by teams from Germany and Japan. These programmed Peles may not the most graceful of strikers, but RoboCup organizers remain convinced that autonomous bots will be able to compete with human athletes by 2050 — which might just give us enough time to develop a taste for soccer. Dribble past the break to see Team DARwin in action, along with an extra clip from the BBC.
