Polar RCX5 training computer feels your multi-sport pain

The French didn’t only invent the guillotine. They also bequeathed us something even more painful (though that’s hard to prove): “Les trois sports”, aka the Triathlon. A swimming-cycling-running succession of pure hurt, which Polar’s latest RCX5 training computer seeks to measure using an array of sensors — much like its rivals the Garmin Forerunner 610 and Timex Ironman Global Trainer. You can buy the RCX5 now for $350 in a basic pack, which includes the watch plus the WearLink+ Hybrid, an amphibious chest-strapped heart rate monitor. Alternatively, you can pick up a pricier bundle containing an extra sensor of your choice. The Bike bundle ($390) includes Polar’s CS W.I.N.D. speed sensor that installs on a fork and spoke. The Run bundle ($420) comes with a s3+ stride sensor that clips to your laces. Finally, the top-of-the-range Multi bundle ($480) replaces both those options with a G5 GPS sensor, which ought to work equally well for both both runners and cyclists thanks to our shiny friends out in orbit. Hit the PR after the break for further details or the extra coverage link for triathlete DC Rainmaker’s seriously in-depth review.

Underwater Camera Is Cheap Enough to Drown

One of the quickest ways to add some impact to your photos is to change your perspective. If you’re tall, crouch or sit on the floor. If you’re short, climb up high. Even better, get in the water.

Photojojo has a new waterproof camera and it costs just $35. That’s the cost of a couple rolls of film and processing, and will transform shots you take at the beach, Hell, if you’re smart, you probably don’t take your camera near the beach anyway, so this will be all-new to you.

The quality is as low as you’d expect: 1.3 megapixels, a dinky little 1.4-inch LCD, a fixed ƒ3.1 lens, a 4X digital zoom, an 30fps video of an unspecified size. On the other hand, it has a 10-second self timer, shoots as close as two feet and runs on a pair of AAAs. And looking at the sample shots, the images are way better than the crap that comes out of the iPad 2.

And of course, it is waterproof.

The “Underwater Digi Cam”, as it is called, is cheap enough and decent enough to be a lot of fun on the beach, or even as a general outdoor camera to take where you wouldn’t dare take an SLR. It doesn’t hurt that it looks cute, too. Available now.

WatchESPN app upgraded for iPad, still restricted to just a few TV providers

The free WatchESPN app that lets users tune into the family sports channels (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com) has been upgraded to version 1.1 on iOS (also available for Android) and in the process added a new UI designed just for the iPad. It sports a new tablet friendly UI, but the key restriction is still that you need to subscribe to Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks or Verizon FiOS TV to make use of the service. If you don’t have one of those and need a quick hit of sports TV without your TV, there is an account preview option that gives a few hours of viewing, no authentication necessary. You can download it yourself at the iTunes link below or check out the commercial embedded after the break.

Convertible Pool Table May Save Your Marriage

Chevillotte Very Table Aluminium Handle 2

Can’t decide between an awesome pool table which the boys will love, or a dining table/desk which might keep you from becoming single and having to hang out with those boys all the time? Well, here’s some good news. For just $20,000 you can have both.

That’s right. Fancy French pool-table company Chevillotte will sell you the convertible “Very(Tables)”, a table which manages the astonishing feat of looking good both as a desk and as a game.

By day (and night, I guess) you can work and eat on the minimalist aluminum desk. But when the need takes you, just remove the baize-protecting top (in three sections) and crank a handle. The center section of the table drops down to make the flat bed, and reveals the cushions and holes. A clever network of metal rods makes channels that guide the balls once sunk, and an electric version can be had for a mere $4,500 more.

It’s perfect, and will please everyone in your home. Just don’t tell anyone how much you spent.

20 gigapixel, 360-degree panorama of Wembley Stadium is among world’s largest, most detailed

Jeffrey Martin is a busy man. Having already shot an 80 gigapixel panorama of London’s skyline and a 40 gigapixel peek inside a Czech library, he has now turned his attention to England’s hallowed Wembley Stadium. The recently rebuilt home of football served as the stage for a new 360-degree panorama, shot during the FA Cup Final this Saturday, which spans 10 20 gigapixels in total and has been made available online at the source link below. Recording was done using a DSLR mounted to a custom robot rig that would continually pump out imagery to an equally exclusive Fujitsu workstation equipped with 192GB of RAM and 24 processing cores. All that grunt was used to automatically stitch more than 1,000 high-res images together, earning the finished product the honor of being one of the world’s largest 360-degree sports panoramic photos. Give the source a bash to tag yourself if you were at the Final or to check who else was there.

[Thanks, Adam]

Update: We originally had this at 10 gigapixel, going from information on the FA’s website, but it turns out to be a 20 gigapixel pic. Its claim for being the largest sports panorama may actually be disputed by Essendon FC in Australia, who managed to pull together a 20 gigapixel image of their own at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in late April. You can see that jumbo pic here, or check out a couple more from Daytona and the NCAA Final Four this year.

French basketball team ‘trains’ with robots, learns how to ‘win’

To the list of French accomplishments you may now add “robot basketball training” — at least if the video above is to be believed. But you probably shouldn’t believe it when members of Poitiers Basket 86 testify that amusement park rides improved the team’s “spatial orientation” and helped them defeat top-ranked Chalon. It’d be different if the “robots” were teaching them perfect free-throw or helping them walk, obviously, but PB86 is known for its innovative advertising, and this seems like a quirky example. Hit the video above to see the pranksters at work, but know that, as with Sartre and Camus, something gets lost in translation.

[Thanks, Antoine]

Contour+ helmet cam goes official, bringing 1080p video with wider viewing angle

Remember that Contour Plus helmet cam teased by a cheeky cyclist last month? Well, this is it, though it turns out the name’s actually written as Contour+. Like the ContourGPS, this new imager captures 1080p video at 30fps, and also packs built-in GPS plus Bluetooth v2.1 — the latter’s for the wireless viewfinder app on iOS and, eventually, Android. The difference between these two cameras? Well, ignoring the colors and the extra 3mm in length, the Contour+ does indeed come with a mini HDMI-out port alongside the microSD slot on the back. Better yet, you’ll also find an HDMI cable in the box to get you going. And of course, let’s not forget the new super-wide lens (still rotatable) that does 170 degrees for 960p and 720p recording, or 125 degrees for 1080p. Both modes best the camera’s predecessor, though the trade-off is the lack of dual-alignment lasers. If this isn’t a problem for you, then feel free to shell out $499.99 when it launches on May 18th.

Update: We have PR after the break.

[Thanks, Daniel H.]

Caption Contest: Samsung hires David Beckham as a global brand ambassador

David Beckham is a man that needs no introduction. Indeed, Samsung hopes he’ll be the one making the introductions, as it’s just signed up the English footballer to act as its global brand ambassador. Mr. Becks will be responsible for disseminating the news that Samsung is one of the major sponsors of the London 2012 Olympics, and we can see he’s already received the first tranche of his remuneration in the form of a Galaxy S II. Lucky him.

Thomas: “I’m sorry, I got the Spanish version, this one says ‘Sii’ on it.”
Vlad: “At 8.49mm, this phone’s almost as thin as my wife!”
Tim: “I don’t know who you are or what this is, but I’m sure Victoria will love it.”
Amar: “Finally, a Galaxy that won’t bench me!”
Darren: “Man, this thing crushes my Aura.”
Richard Lai: “As part of the deal, Samsung will also be announcing the Galaxy S Beckham. OK, it’s just a golden dual-core.”
Myriam: “So you want me to drop-kick this in front of the cameras, right?”
Zach Honig: “Maybe in this Galaxy I can win a World Cup.”

Screen Grabs: Newly minted Bengals wide receiver AJ Green rocks Dell Streak during NFL draft (video)

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

A tipster sent us video from ESPN’s NFL draft coverage, asking us to identify the giant phone in University of Georgia wide receiver AJ Green’s hand. Turns out it’s a white Dell Streak, perhaps the only phone on the market capable of dwarfing the Cincinnati Bengals’ fourth overall pick by comparison. Keep in mind, Green is a big guy — he’s 6 feet, 4 inches. He also catches footballs for a living, so we figure that, at the very least, he’s got to have average hands for a man of his size. We’re happy to report he didn’t spike the phone after hearing the news. Videographic evidence after the break.

[Thanks, Ramon]

Rollin’ Justin robot plays catch, makes coffee, aims to replace your dad (video)

With an 80 percent success rate, there’s a pretty good chance that Justin here is better at playing catch than you are. This old German Aerospace Agency-designed robot, which we first saw in 2009, learned a new trick — he can track thrown objects as they approach, calculate their flight path, and snap his cold, soulless hands around them before they hit the ground. Better yet, he can catch two objects at the same time. For his encore, Rollin’ Justin uses his tactile finger sensors to prepare you a cup of coffee, just so you know there’s no hard feelings once’s he’s done schooling you at three flies up. The ‘bot can be controlled via iPad and acts totally grateful when you get him a tie for Christmas, even though it’s not what he really wanted. Video after the break.

Update: Johannes sent us another video of him catching two balls with one hand! It’s after the break.
