Droid 2 R2-D2 edition spied in the wild, ready to repair your X-wing

If you compare this shot of the bespoke R2-D2 Droid 2 to the background of Verizon’s teaser site (inset), you can see this is almost certainly the genuine article — and we knew that Verizon intended to intro this thing at the Star Wars-themed Celebration V conference kicking off today, so this is all making a lot of sense. We admit, we were kind of hoping for a graphic that was a little more… you know, R2-D2-shaped, but when it comes to astromech-themed gear, we’ll take what we can get.

Droid 2 launching as soon as August 12, embraces Star Wars roots with R2-D2 edition

Ready to have your mind blown? Good, then sit down for a moment: we’re hearing from a trusted source that the thoroughly-leaked Motorola Droid 2 for Verizon will be launching on August 12 — although it seems to be something of a soft launch, because marketing efforts aren’t scheduled to kick in until a week and a half later on the 23rd. What’s even more interesting, though, is that there’ll be a Star Wars edition of the phone launching with a white R2-D2 on the back. For the record, this isn’t the first time Verizon has toyed with the Droid line’s Star Wars origins; Motorola actually had to license the name from Lucasfilm, and to promote the original phone, Big Red sent around remote-control Artoos last year to various media outlets. What we don’t know is whether the special edition will be launching at the same time as the stock version — so if the plain-vanilla Droid 2 comes out first, that might automatically make the decision of which to buy for some folks. What about you?

[Thanks, RBF]

Mimoco Launches Limited Editions of Lobot and Monster Molly Flash Drives

SW_Lobot_MIMOBOT_ad.jpgMimoco, creator of the cutest Star Wars-themed Flash drives this side of Tatooine, is prepping to release limited editions of its Mimobot USB drive line at key conventions this summer including the San Diego Comic Con and Taipei Toy Festival in Taiwan.

First up is the massive toy convention in Taiwan, Taipei, which will set the toy world on fire starting today though July 11. It’s there that Mimoco’s Monster Molly Flash drive–a design collaboration between the Mimoco, the folks at Taipei, and popular Hong Kong-based designer Kenny
Wong–will debut, with 500 units available.

Last but not least is the infamous cyborg Lobot (pictured at left), who will make his first appearance at this year’s International Comic Con in San Diego (July 21 to 25). Lobot also comes just in time to celebrate The Empire Strikes Back’s 30th Anniversary at Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando from August 12 to 15. Who would serve as a better guy to back up your files than a dude who can communicate with a city’s mainframe–in the sky? Unfortunately, only 1,000 Lobots will be available between both events, in 2GB to 16GB capacities. No specific pricing has been announced as yet.

Lucasfilms Threatens Legal Action Over Wicked Laser

Spyder-III-550-x-413.jpg

The folks behind Star Wars want you to know that Wicked Lasers are not lightsabers, no matter what you might hear. Lucasfilms, which, let’s face it, has always been eager to pursue legal action when it comes to protecting its trademarks (particularly those of the “Star Wars” variety), has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Wicked Lasers, asking the company to either change or halt production of its Spyder III Pro Arctic Series.

As any properly opportunistic business would, Wicked Lasers has taken the opportunity to use the potential suit to promote its product, sending out a press release titled “Lucasfilms Ltd. Sues Wicked Lasers Over Lightsaber Confusion.” According to Wicked Lasers, the company “has never compared this or any of his products to the Jedi weapon wielded by Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader–not to mention the other obvious differences between the two products.”

What “obvious differences,” you ask? Well, there’s the fact that the lightsaber is a terrific tool for beheading Sith and Jedi alike, whereas the Spyder III couldn’t scramble an egg. That said, I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of a lawsuit filed by the company that owns the trademark to Jedi Mind Tricks.

If there’s validity to a suit, it’s not in the use of names (which Wicked Lasers seems to largely avoid) so much as in the product design. As evidenced by the above picture, there is something pretty lightsabery in the design of the device’s handle.

Poor George Lucas just wants to let the world know that these are not the lasers they’re looking for.

Hands On: Star Wars Science Mini Lightsaber Tech Lab

Jake-Mini-Light-Saber2.jpgMy six-year-old loves Star Wars, so much so that he plans on forgoing college for the Jedi Academy. But before that, he wants to build his own lightsaber–you know, like a real Jedi. While I don’t foresee any academy training in his future, with the Star Wars Science Mini Lightsaber Tech Lab ($14.99 list) I’ve found one way of making his dreams come true. The Lightsaber Tech Lab is allows you to build your own lightsaber and learn some basic principles about light and optics at the same time.

The first thing to emphasize is that this is a mini lightsaber. That means that all the parts that comprise the final lightsaber are pretty minuscule. It would have been a brilliant idea on the part of the manufacturer, Uncle Milton, to include some sort of container to hold all the little bits. As it was, I had to make due with a Ziploc bag.

The package contains several parts that make up the final lightsaber. Among them are the hand grip, hilt cover (which covers the power unit), the blade, two lenses and four “crystals.” The two lenses allow the “beam” emanating from the lightsaber to be either wide angle one or focused. The four crystals–red, green, blue, and purple– change the color of the lightsaber itself, something I was told by young Jake was a very important distinction, because God forbid you use the red crystal when you’re pretending to be Mace Windu.

Video: Day in the Life of a Pet AT-AT

What does an AT-AT do when it’s not advancing over the icy wastes of Hoth or crushing trees and blasting stupid teddy-bears on the forest moon of Endor? Why, it chases dogs, sniffs fire-hydrants and drops dog-eggs on the sidewalk, just like any other four-legged pet, of course.

This fantastic video by Patrick Boivin, entitled AT-AT Day Afternoon, shows a day in the life of a pet AT-AT. It’s a little too full of schoolboy humor, but the Jabba gag is priceless. Best of all, it’s only a minute long, so you have no excuse not to quickly brighten your day. I wish my brother’s toy AT-AT had been this much fun, instead of just collecting dust and filling up the toy-box.

TomTom strikes back with Darth Vader voice pack (video)

We guess TomTom was listening when we said it had to respond to Nokia’s Own Voice app for custom turn-by-turn navigation instructions, as the Dutch company has announced a new Darth Vader voice pack. Following in the footsteps of such luminaries as Homer Simpson and Burt Reynolds, the Sith Lord has contributed his vocal stylings to the cause of guiding the lost and confused down the right path. Though it wasn’t without hiccups — check out the video after the break for the recording session — the pack is now complete and ready for download, provided you have $13 handy to smooth the transaction. Yoda, C3PO and Han Solo packs are set to follow in the coming months. May the farce be with you.

Crapgadget: countdown to extinction, home edition

Feast your eyes upon the bloated list of horrific wares we’ve dug up from the dregs of the ‘net for you this fine, delicious afternoon. Most of these “gadgets” are of the home-making variety, so will you waste your money on the R2-D2 vacuum, telling yourself that it’ll motivate you to do that spring cleaning before fall arrives? Or will you lay down a bit of cash for the “toilet sound blocker” which spares you the intense, buzz-killing embarrassment of allowing other people in the vicinity to hear you flushing the toilet? Will you instead reach into your wallet to make the USB seat cooler your own (you know, since seats are so very hot)? No? Well, there’s some other, even less interesting crap available too. Enjoy. Oh, and be sure to check out the Chicken Burger USB hub. It’s the breast.

Star Wars Mimobots, Series 5: The Force Is Strong with these Ones

StarWarsMimobots.jpg

Geeks, get out your plastic. The designers at Mimobot have dipped into the Star Wars well once again, and the fifth series of its Star Wars line of USB Flash drives looks extremely cool.

The stormtrooper Mimobot, you see, comes with a removable helmet. You won’t know if you’ve got Luke in disguise or Han in disguise until you remove it. How cool is that?

Other figures in the series include R2-D2 (finally!), Obi-Wan, and a Jawa. Each one comes loaded with desktop wallpapers, icons, avatars, and screensavers (they’re Flash drives, after all), and they come in 2GB to 16GB capacities. Prices start at $29.95.
