Hasta La Gadget!

Who’s got some love for prototype gadgets, eh? Apparently someone does in Shenzhen (surprise of the day?). PC Online managed to cuddle up with a black Dell Streak / Mini 5 prototype, which has “Model M01M” marked under the battery cover — something not seen in the earlier teardown, and is probably the most official name to date. Spec-wise the M01M sums up what’s been speculated all along — 5-inch 800×480 touchscreen, Android 1.6, 1GHz CPU (presumably Snapdragon, as revealed by the teardown), WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G of some sort, 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, front-facing camera, and the same 1530mAh battery as the one in the teardown. The price? ¥7,500, which converts to a whopping $1,098 in US cash, but bear in mind that this doesn’t reflect the M01M’s actual retail price for whenever it might launch.

If you liked what you saw of Dell’s Mini 5 / Streak Android tablet-MID-phone-thing at CES but didn’t feel like you had enough of a chance to really see it in action, the gray market has come through for you again. We’ve just gotten pinged with this video of our friend Six-fingers handling what looks to be a fully functioning device, replete with Dell’s custom Android skin. You can see the company’s customized keyboard, navigation, and apps in the clip, and also raise your eyebrows at the fully functioning multitouch in the browser. Andy Rubin is going to hate this. Take a look at the full clip after the break, but prepare to be taken to a land of enchantment and mystery by the soundtrack.

We just got out of Dell‘s mobile roundtable, and despite an extended tangent on China’s phone market, we did manage to get some details on its AT&T-bound Mini 3 and yet-to-be-officially titled “Streak” tablet. Let’s get down to brass tacks here: the Mini 3’s been customized with ActiveSync for our own (corporate) email systems. There is Android market, but for future reference, that’s always going to be up to the carrier. As for naming the 5-inch tablet that’s so far been rumored / codenamed the Streak, the company “might as well call it a Mini” said Dell, perhaps jokingly — Mini 5, anyone? During a quick hands-on we got to check out the keyboard, which was very nice and included a numpad on the right in landscape mode (pictured). We also witnessed someone checking out the system details, and sure enough, this custom skin is running Android 1.6 — no telling if that’s what it’ll ship with, though. There’s also a front-facing camera on the Streak, and much to our delight, capacitive multitouch is alive and well on both devices mentioned here.

As for method of distribution, the company will sell phones via Dell’s online store (in addition to the carrier stores), but whether or not they’ll be unlocked is something the company will “most certainly experiment with that at some point, but that’s not [its] first priority today.”

It’s not much to go on but after months of rumors and then the sudden appearance of Dell’s 5-inch MID on video, well, even unsubstantiated reports from the Commercial Times can be taken with a degree of truthiness. The latest tattle has QISDA manufacturing Dell’s Android 2.0-based MID (spotted with a 5 megapixel camera, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, 3G data, and WiFi) with the intent of ramping up for an AT&T launch sometime in 2010. Given the uptick in leaks recently, we’d expect a Q1 launch to be just about right.

We heard Dell was developing a couple of Android prototypes, the first being its Android phone. Is this mini-tablet with 5-inch touchscreen, 3G and Wi-Fi the second? Video, pics, and a size comparison after the jump.

This apparent engineering sample was leaked by Vietnamese site, Tinhte.com, and appears fairly legit. It suggests the Streak has an 800 by 480 touch screen, 5-megapixel camera with dual LED flash, microSD card storage, and a 1,300mAh battery.

As you can see in the video, it also looks like there will be a front-facing camera for video calls. Slashgear also points out that the engineering sample is labeled as a US variant. You’ll know more when we do. [Tinhte via SlashGear]
