Hasta La Gadget!

The Mini Connected app finally hit the App Store back in December, enabling those with suitably equipped little German/British autos to connect their iPhones and iPods and do what nature intended. Well, everything nature intended except for streaming Pandora. Now that solemn right is a possibility too, with the latest version of Pandora available in iTunes. Update that, plug your iPhone into your Mini, and you can get your stream on, just like we did at CES. However, if you’re more of a domestics guy or gal you don’t have to feel left out, because this new version supports Ford’s SYNC AppLink as well. And, yes, we had some quality hands-on time with that, too.

As a geek I always find myself firing up Notepad because of how fast it is, plus it’s nice not being flooded with toolbar buttons. A free utility called Nocs will cater to those that feel the same way about Notepad, but also want some sort of synchronization with Google Docs. One particularly nice feature is that you can have documents auto-save in the background so that you should be able to recover most of your data even if your computer crashes.

Nocs also sports multiple tabs and can handle advanced searches using regular expressions. Here’s a better breakdown of some of the features:

• Full synchronization with multiple documents open at the same time (tabs).
• Auto-save files up to every 5 seconds.
• Supports folder organization (create/delete/rename), and you can specify a default folder to save to.
• Pin documents to have them auto-loaded when Nocs starts
• You can sort documents by title or by time updated.
• Regular expression search/replace.
• Tip: You can close tabs with by clicking the mouse wheel

I’d say that Nocs isn’t anything fancy, and isn’t much more advanced than Notepad itself. So if you’re not a fan of Notepad you probably won’t use this very much, but if you’re a fan of the plaintext files then Nocs might be right up your alley.

Note: I had problems installing this on Windows 7 because it said I didn’t have .NET 4.0 installed, but I did. It turns out you need the full thing installed, which is not what their installer links to in their prompt to get .NET Framework 4.0.

If you’ve been paying attention to our auto coverage from CES this year, posts with pictures of pretty cars that go tearing down the page amidst the flood of tablets and superphones, you might have spotted our hands-on with SYNC AppLink. It’s making its debut in the 2011 Ford Fiesta, letting smartphoners stream Pandora and a few other apps right through the car. Now Ford is confirming that the 2012 Mustang is going to be next to get the nod and, like on the current Fiesta, it’ll be free. That said, if you can’t resist ticking the boxes next to the premium options you can choose to add voice-activated navigation, which includes an 8-inch touchscreen that also displays AppLink information. No word on cost for that just yet, but you can check out the interface in the pictures below.

Each year we see more and more cars at CES, more and more infotainment systems, and more and more reasons to get excited about driving to work. But each time Ford is the company with the biggest presence, and this year there’s more Blue Oval than ever with the first CES unveil of a whole new car, the upcoming Focus Electric. Alan Mulally was kind enough to take a few minutes to speak with us about just what the heck the company is doing here and, more importantly, what kind of surprises are coming from his keynote speech on Friday. It’s all in the video below. And, yes, more of that Mustang too — which just so happens to be painted in our favorite color.

Smartphone user? Regardless of platform you have no shortage of navigation options, and now Ford has added another way to get where you’re going — if you’re also an owner of a SYNC TDI-compatible car, anyway. Using the new SYNC Destinations app (available today for iOS and Android, with BlackBerry coming soon) you can more efficiently pre-plan your route. The app lets you pick a destination, view real-time traffic updates, even check out congestion predictions based on weather, time of day, and holidays. It’s a feature that would have been pretty handy last week when we were simultaneously dealing with a heck of a blizzard and a whole lot of people trying to flee their in-laws.

The app will even suggest what time you should leave to avoid the most headaches, a potential boon for those desperately seeking any excuse to hit the road a little early. It is, however, just for planning, sending your route to the car and then disabling the phone’s display when you cross the magic 5mph threshold. It’s safer that way, after all.
