Hasta La Gadget!

Seems like T-Mobile’s fed up with claims that its network isn’t truly 4G — starting today, it’s doubling the bandwidth of HSPA+ to 42 megabits per second as promised. They’ve conducting a live test in Las Vegas on the CES 2011 stage, playing some online multiplayer Need for Speed, but it won’t be limited to the City of Sin for long — fully two-thirds of its 200+ million person coverage zone will find blazing transfer speeds by the end of the year as the improvements roll out. Next stop — 650Mbps.

On yesterday’s new that LG would be bringing the G-Slate Honeycomb tablet to T-Mobile, interest in this particular presser obviously went through the roof — and now we’re here! Let’s hope this is an action-packed hour of crazy new hardware, and maybe — just maybe — some discussion of HSPA+ as a 4G technology. So, now you know what Motorola’s Cliq 2 is all about, but how does it feel? Much like a cheaper, curvier Droid 2, to tell you the truth — as you’d expect when the device comes saddled with very similar specs. It’s pleasantly weighty like the Droid, and similarly stylish, though the capacitive touchscreen didn’t respond quite as readily to our touch, though that could be the effect of the hefty MOTOBLUR UI layer rather than an issue with the digitizer. The keyboard’s actually a bit more tactile, with domed soft rubber keys, and the hexagonal honeycomb arrangement felt refreshing compared to the some of the buttons we’re used to. We didn’t have loads of time with the unit, but it could be a decent alternative to the T-Mobile G2. We’ll let you know when we find the time for a full review — in the meanwhile, check some snapshots below.

What, you didn’t forget about the Cliq series, did you? The followup to Motorola and T-Mobile’s slider’s been long rumored — we heard a few morsels of information back in September — and now CellPhoneSignal has a few pics of what it claims is the Begonia, aka Cliq 2 (for T-Mobile, naturally). The keyboard here is, well, interesting, to say the least, and there’s also apparently a five megapixel camera on the back. We’re not really sure how our thumbs feel about the layout, but if this is legit, we’d reckon they’ll get to try it out themselves sooner or later. That’s what giant gadget trade shows are for, right? Right. More pictures via the source link.

Amazingly, the FCC still hasn’t released the full text of the net neutrality rules it passed by a contentious 3-2 vote yesterday, so we can’t really say much about what’s in them — and while this sort of delay is typical of the Genachowski FCC, it hasn’t stopped the carriers from issuing statements on the new rules. We’ve got to say, responses to the new rules range all over the map: Sprint commended the FCC, T-Mobile needs some time to look things over, AT&T called it a “fair middle ground” but railed about “radical voices” and “heavy-handed government regulation” (seriously) and Verizon — well, Verizon issued what appears to be a veiled threat to sue everyone. That’s pretty interesting, since it sure looks to us like the FCC all but rubber-stamped last summer’s Google / Verizon neutrality proposal, but you never know what’s happening behind closed doors — and remember, Verizon’s last major policy statement was a call to revamp the entire Telecommunications Act, so Big Red might have bigger plans in store.
