We don’t usually find our latest tech news in Women’s Wear Daily yet the publication seems to have scooped Rupert Murdoch’s plans for a tablet-only newspaper called The Daily — news now seemingly confirmed by the New York Times. Scheduled for release early next year, The Daily is expected to cost 99 cents per week (about $4.25 per month) for an electronic paper published seven days a week by a 100-member strong newsroom staffed with “twentysomething” talent led by a former managing editor from the New York Post. According to the sources speaking to WWD, It’ll be written with the “sensibilities” of a tabloid and the intelligence of a broadsheet focusing on national news. In other words, it’s said to be like “The New York Post Goes to College.” A beta is expected by Christmas before hitting the iPad “and other tablet devices” sometime in early 2011.

Don’t expect HP’s webOS 2.0 to be tied to an HVGA screen for long — come “early 2011,” the company will introduce a number of “really interesting new form factors,” including tablets and phones. That was the message driven home at Palm’s Developer Day this year, according to PreCentral‘s Dieter Bohn, and the software that’s going to make that shift possible is a little something called Enyo. Picking up where Ares left off, Enyo is a Javascript app framework with native hardware acceleration and faster app load times (they’re allegedly down to one second now), but the part we think you’ll be most interested in is the promise of apps that natively scale to multiple aspect ratios. HP’s Scott Miles demoed it earlier this week by playing around with a tiny, single-pane portrait email application in the desktop version of Chrome… and then maximized the browser window to reveal a fully-functioning three-pane landscape layout suited for a large tablet screen. Representatives stressed that the email app was a proof of concept, but Enyo’s here to stay, replacing the earlier Mojo starting in 2011 and slated to be available in early 2011 via developer SDK. Still have your hopes up about a Windows Phone 7 slider from Sony Ericsson? Then you might want to dial back those expectations, at least according to Sony Ericsson France CEO Pierre Perron. He recently told French newspaper Les Echos that while Sony Ericsson has indeed been in talks with Microsoft about Windows Phone 7, the company is not likely to pursue it because it would “run the risk of standardizing our smartphones,” adding that (roughly translated), “we would be obliged to fight only on design and price, which we want to avoid.” Perron also seemed to outright dismiss the idea of a tablet from Sony Ericsson (be it Android or otherwise), flatly stating that the company doesn’t want to be the “24th” tablet on the market. Of course, it could well be a different story a few months or a year down the line, but it certainly doesn’t sound like Sony Ericsson will be straying far from its current strategy at the moment.

Some day soon, you’ll be able to run down to the deli on the corner and pick up an iPad along with a loaf of bread and a can of refreshing Four Loko malt beverage energy drink. We’re not quite there yet, but it seems we’re well on our way.

You can already pick up the iPad at your local Apple Store, Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart. And now, a surprising new retailer has entered the fray: TJ Maxx. Yep, the place where you buy all of your off-brand irregular blouses has started stocking the popular tablet.

Not all of TJ Maxx’s locations are carrying the tablet–in fact, it seems to be just a few isolated incidents. One Engadget reader sent in a shot of the 16GB Wi-Fi version he picked up for a cool $399 in Vernon, NY. Other stores in Ohio and New Jersey have also confirmed that they’re stocking the device.

Probably best to call ahead to a store if you’re thinking of picking one up. It’s better than digging through piles and piles of oddly-sized sweaters.
