India’s $35 Android tablet reportedly on track for January launch

It seemed like a bit of a stretch from the beginning, but it looks like India’s $35 Android tablet is intent on proving the skeptics wrong — the Indian government has just announced that it’s awarded the manufacturing contract to HCL Technologies (makers of the once world’s cheapest laptop), and that the first batch of tablets are slated to be available by January 10th. That initial run will reportedly only include the 7-inch model that we’ve been seeing all along, but there’s also apparently 5-inch and 9-inch versions planned for launch at a later date. We also presume that the tablet is still hanging onto that $35 price tag (for university students, at least), but that key detail is curiously absent from this latest announcement.

Exclusive: HP’s Zeen C510 Android tablet in the wild

Well, thar she blows — we just got this shot of the HP’s seven-inch Zeen Android tablet that’s shipping with the leaked PhotoSmart eStation C510 printer system just straight chilling in the wilds of China. Apparently this unit is a little bit closer to final than the one our other tipsters have been playing with — and unfortunately, the stock Android homescreen has been totally removed in favor of the TouchSmart UI. As we’d guessed, there’s also no Gmail app or Market access, although there is a homegrown email client and a fair bit of integration with Yahoo services like Mail and Messenger. Facebook is also preloaded, and the screenshot shows apps for 60 Minutes, MSNBC, and Dreamworks, so it looks like there’ll be some video action going on — and that Barnes & Noble logo all but confirms the Nook compatibility our previous tipsters had mentioned. There’s also a printing app and that Coupons app, which we’re guessing… prints coupons, but maybe HP’s trying to surprise us.

We’re told the software is better than on earlier Zeen units and that the previously-bad touchscreen has been improved, but that there’s still work to be done before the projected late September launch. Don’t get your hopes up about snagging this one without a printer, though — we’re told the solo SKU has been canceled, and only the $399 bundle with the Zeus printer will be available. Makes sense — we’re guessing it’s all webOS for HP from here on out. One more pic after the break.

Samsung vows to ship 10 million Galaxy Tabs, grab a third of the tablet market

We may still be waiting on final word of pricing and availability for the Galaxy Tab, but it doesn’t look like Samsung is wasting any time in making some pretty bold claims about it. Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Samsung product executive Hankil Yoon said that the company expects to ship 10 million Galaxy Tabs and grab a third of the global tablet market by next year. Yoon further added that Samsung eventually plans to introduce a whole family of Galaxy Tab devices, although it’s not clear if those factor into his sales projections. Anyway you slice it, however, ten million tablets is a lot of relief on the go.

Getac Introduces V200 Rugged Core i7 Tablet

Getac, known for its ruggadized computer solutions, has announced its convertible, multitouch tablet PC made of magnesium alloy.Built to perform in a number harsh environments, the Getac V200 is taking hits and making guarantees.

This PC is powered by Intel’s Core i7-620LM processor, running 2GHZ to 2.8GHZ with Turbo Boost. The V200 comes standard with a shock mounted, 320GB hard drive–you can swap it out for an 80GB solid state drive upon configuration. The multitouch is resistive, rather than touch sentitive, meaning you can use it with your gloves on.

The screen measures 12.1-inches and weighs less than 6 pounds. The design supports a full-size keyboard as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 2.1 connectivity, and 10/100/1000 Giga LAN. Ports include USB, VGA, RS232, eSATA, SD card reader, and PCMCIA. It also comes with a fingerprint scanner and hardware encryption for security.

Getac’s V200 also features the company’s LifeSupport battery swapping system that allows you to swap batteries in the field without shutting the system down. Simply enter into standby mode and you will have 2 minutes to swap batteries without closing any applications or programs. The V200 is IP65 compliant for resilience to dust, vibration, water, and temperatures as low as -20 degrees centigrade.

The V200 will be available starting in October and, SlashGear reports, it will be priced between $3,799 and $5,099 depending on sceen size and options included upon order.

WeTab tablet spotted running MeeGo at IFA

Remember the WeTab? Or the WePad, perhaps? While we can’t say we had much confidence in ever seeing the tablet again after a seemingly endless series of false starts and delays, it has turned up at IFA, and with something of a surprise no less — it’s running a customized version of MeeGo. Those customizations look to keep things mostly in line with the interface we saw during the device’s WePad days, but it does seem to be a bit more responsive, and is seemingly in a nearly final state. Of course, it’s not quite final enough to avoid another delay — it’s now apparently set to roll out in “late September.” Head on past the break to check it out in action.

ExoPC preorders open to all from CAD $649, tablet loses GPS but gains SanDisk SSD

First the good news, for those who’ve waited months to get their paws on that 11.6-inch multitouch capacitive screen: there’s no longer anything stopping you from dropping a stack of change on the Windows 7-wielding ExoPC. Originally restricted to the first 1,200 dedicated fans, preorders are now open to all, with the 32GB tablet setting you back CAD $649 (about $624) and the 64GB version CAD $749 (about $720), with both models featuring up-to-160MB/s fast SanDisk P4 mini-SSDs and up to four hours of battery life. The bad news is that you’ll no longer find GPS on that 64GB model, as the prototype didn’t pan out, and we’re afraid that September 30th ship date has already slid back to October 15th. Take a gander at our hands-on preview (or better yet, wait for our review) if you’ve yet to make your mind up.

Samsung suggests Galaxy Tab will cost between $200 and $400 on contract — also coming to Vodafone

Early reports indicate Europe will pay a pretty penny for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, but the 7-inch tablet may cost a good bit less when it comes to US shores — the Wall Street Journal paraphrases a Samsung executive who claims it could run between $200 and $300 depending on the all-important carrier subsidies. The Korea Times, meanwhile, suggests a $300 to $400 retail price according to a different Samsung bigwig, who added that the Tab “will cost slightly more than the Galaxy S smartphone.” As you’re probably aware, Sammy’s Galaxy S typically retails for about $200 in the US — excepting Sprint’s Epic 4G at $250 — so if you held a bursting Li-ion battery to our head and forced us to guess, we’d say the latter range of dollar signs is far more likely.

Rydeen hopes to cash in on tablet fever with Android-based, Armada-powered PND

You may never have heard of auto electronics provider Rydeen Mobile, but it certainly knows of you — or more specifically, your desire to obtain a slick new tablet PC — and has thus created an 7-inch Android tablet that integrates the dedicated map functionality of its GPS machines. The “gPad” GCOM701 won’t be a terribly high-end device, mind you, with an 800MHz ARMADA 166 SOC, 256MB of RAM, bring-your-own-microSD-storage and what we’re led to believe is a resistive touchscreen, but it sounds like at least Rydeen isn’t being stingy on the software front. You’ll find a full suite of Google Apps, Adobe Flash Lite 4 and AVI support, not to mention 4 million points of interest thanks to the integrated Navteq client. Connectivity include GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, both mini and full-sized USB ports, plus a front-facing camera for video chat, and there’s a 2400mAh battery the company claims will provide six hours of solid use. Find it this November at an unspecified price, no doubt alongside the pictured (but not mentioned) car dock.

Samsung Galaxy Tab reported to retail at €699 and €799 in Europe (update: O2 Germany pricing)

An increasing number of Euroland news outlets are reporting an eye-watering set of prices for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Although still unofficial and therefore not yet to be trusted, the values we’re hearing are €699 ($890) in France and €799 ($1,020) in Germany. Those presumably represent the cost of the 16GB and 32GB Tab, respectively, and align perfectly with Apple’s iPad WiFi + 3G pricing — aside from the fact the iPads have double the storage at each price point. Oops! That does make us wary to believe these numbers just yet, but if you want a laugh, why not check out UK importer Expansys today, which is offering a cracking deal for the 16GB Galaxy Tab at £680 ($1,050). And with only a 39-day wait!

Update: So we’re hearing some conflicting information here. Samsung itself is telling us at IFA that no pricing has been announced and that any prices floating around are speculation — but it seems the company has already announced a suggested retail prices of SEK 9,000 in Sweden including VAT, which works out to about $1,240 (or $930 without VAT). In other words, even after taxes have been removed from the equation, you’re looking at a pretty pricey option for an unsubsidized device here. Let’s hope we see some steep discounts on contract, eh? Update 2: O2 Germany’s official Twitter account informs us that the Galaxy Tab will cost the Bundesrepublik roughly €759 (about $972) in all — a €99 ($127) deposit to start off and then €27.50 ($35) a month likely over two years. Thanks, Nils!
