Elusive Galaxy Tab 8.9 hitting Nordic countries in September

Samsung today issued a slew of press releases announcing the arrival of new tablets in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway. The news, naturally, focuses on the company’s flashy Galaxy Tab 10.1, which will arrive in those countries in August. What’s really interesting here, however, is the mention of the more compact Galaxy Tab 8.9, which has been out of the spotlight as of late, reportedly due to screen problems. The issues (if there were indeed any) have apparently been resolved, and the 8.9 is set to be released in the aforementioned Nordic territories in September — either that or it’s going to take an extra month to shave an inch and change off of those remaining 10.1 models.

Olivetti’s OliPad 110 tablet runs on Honeycomb, olive oil

Just a few months after unleashing what it called Italy’s first tablet, Olivetti is turning its attention to what might be Italy’s first tablet upgrade — the OliPad 110. Much like its predecessor, this 1.3-pound slate rocks an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and a 10-inch touchscreen, but runs on Honeycomb and boasts a higher-res, 1280 x 800 display. There’s also a two-megapixel camera strapped to the front, a five-megapixel lens ’round back and 16GB of onboard memory. No word yet on pricing or availability, but you can check out more pics of this bella signorina at the source link, below.

Best Buy adds $50 dock to its collection of HTC Flyer accessories

Surely by now you’ve recouped that $80 you begrudgingly forked over for your Flyer stylus, right? Good. Because the parade of accessories for the 7-inch slate continues. Now, Best Buy’s selling a matching white micro-USB dock for $50. It’s perfect for transforming the slate into the aluminum-clad bedside alarm of your dreams, but you can also connect your own MHL adapter to the rear micro-USB port, allowing you to output video to an HDTV. Looks like more than a few folks are sweet on the idea of porting HTC Watch to a bigger screen — the dock’s back-ordered with a one- to two-week delay. But is it worth the fifty bucks? We’ll leave that to you and your wallet.

Blake Griffin gets Vizio Tablet before you can, proves famous people get special treatment (updated)

Being Blake Griffin has its perks — he’s NBA Rookie of the Year and a millionaire, plus he’s got the adoration of millions and the ability to posterize fools with prodigious power dunks. He also got the Vizio tablet before it goes on sale to the general public, and posted a video showing off his new VIA Plus-equipped slate. We’re glad that Blake Superior’s enjoying the tablet’s portrait and landscape stereo speakers and its universal remote function… really, we are. But, we’d rather be watching him catch alley-oops and throw down windmills on a tablet of our very own — c’mon Vizio, quit playing favorites.

[Thanks, Ben]

Update: Looks like you’ll be able to join Blake on the Vizio bandwagon soon, as the folks at This is my next got a pic showing that Walmart’s already putting the tablet’s $349 price tag on store shelves.

Huawei MediaPad debuts in weird, confusing video ad

There’s a fine balance to be struck when you want to drum up interest in a device but not release too much information before its official launch. Huawei did that very nicely with its first MediaPad teaser image last week, showing us only the tablet lounging casually atop the desk of a surely sophisticated businessman. Today we’ve come across a followup video that also lets us peek the pad’s rear — which looks just about identical to the one on the company’s Ideos S7 Pro — but also confuses the hell out of us with its, erm, narrative. You’ll have to just jump beyond the break and be befuddled with us. The MediaPad should get its proper launch in just under a week, on June 20th, though Huawei’s Facebook page already shows an Android Honeycomb screenshot on it and our rough estimation from the video places the screen size at 7 inches. Not that we ever get to see it, cursed uninformative teasers!

Samsung Galaxy Tab spreads wings, flies to premium seats on American Airlines

http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/13/samsung-galaxy-tab-spreads-wings-flies-to-premium-seats-on-amer/

Move on over, Delta. The 200 iPads at your JFK terminal may entertain some folks waiting to board, but before the year’s out American Airlines will start switching out 6,000 in-flight entertainment systems with Samsung 10.1-inch Galaxy Tabs. Sammy will be customizing the Honeycomb slates with flight related “features” including AA’s streaming service mentioned last month, and possibly even adding “expanded memory” for the devices — no word on how, though. Panasonic’s console has some competition it seems. It’s notable that these will only be available in “premium cabins” on a handful of long-distance routes, and unless you’re flying in a 767-200, WiFi access — a separate purchase, by the way — may not be available. We’ve embedded some PR with the details for all you jet-setting tablet enthusiasts after the break.

Sky Go consolidates live TV streaming on UK PCs and iOS devices next month

Over in the UK, Sky TV is streamlining its efforts to serve up TV channels away from the TV by launching the new Sky Go service July 6th. It combines and replaces the existing online Sky Player and Sky Mobile TV services into one offering that’s free for subscribers, and in August will open up to those who don’t have Sky TV service for between £15-£40 per month. The new package also means changes for Sky Player on the Xbox 360 (which has its own changes in store) and Fetch TV, which will now just be “Sky” and will no longer count as one of the two allowed Sky Go device activations. Check the link below for the full list of channels which includes all the Sky Sports feeds, MTV, Disney and even ESPN without requiring the WatchESPN app we have in the US. There are a few drawbacks however, as it drops support for Windows Media Center and so far only iOS devices (running version 4.0 or higher – no first gen iPod Touches allowed) are on the approved list, but the official FAQ mentions an Android version on the way this year.

Toshiba Thrive pre-order now live, starts at $430 and ends up in your hands in mid-July

As promised, Toshiba is marking June 13th with pre-order availability of its Thrive Android (3.1!) tablet, a device whose life aspiration and name happen to coincide perfectly. This 10-inch Tegra 2 portable has the usual 1280 x 800 resolution, dual cameras (5 megapixel on the back, 2 megapixel up front), a gigabyte of RAM, and a 23WHr battery, but it also brings nice expandability with full-size HDMI, USB 2.0 and SD card slots. The Easy Grip back covers can be swapped — which, yes, means you can also replace the battery — though you’ll have to splash out $20 for any non-black hues. The 8GB Thrive costs $430, followed by the 16GB unit at $480 and the 32GB option at $580. You can order yours directly from Toshiba or at Amazon, Best Buy or Office Direct, with deliveries slated for mid-July.

[Thanks, Matthew]

HP rolls out the YouTube carpet for TouchPad slate, prices accessories (video)

Now that HP’s TouchPad has a confirmed July 1st release date, the company’s going to do its darnedest to make sure you’re excited for the slate, and the company’s starting off rather well if you ask us — instead of attempting to find a new anthem, it’s simply showing off what the dual-core tablet actually does. The nine YouTube videos after the break may not be the most exciting things you’ll watch all day, but they certainly do show off the multitasking magic of HP’s card-based operating system. If that’s not nearly enough TouchPad information, though, Geekazine also taped a 37-minute conversation with HP product manager Tim Pettitt, where he reveals that the final TouchPad won’t have a traditional gesture area, but it will recognize the traditional swipe up for opening and closing apps. By the by, all the TouchPad’s accessories have now been priced: you’ll drop $30 for a charger, $50 for the official folding case, $70 for the Bluetooth keyboard, and $80 for the new Touchstone dock. Pricey.

HTC Flyer drops by the FCC again, this time with T-Mobile friendly GSM bands

The WiFi-only HTC Flyer tablet touched down last month without a peep from Carly and pals, but those magenta-tinted marketing plans are looking far more likely now — a GSM-based Flyer just hit the FCC with support for T-Mobile’s 3G bands. Visually and functionally, it looks like the same savory slate we saw tested in April, except with the all-important 1700MHz frequency commonly used by T-Mobile for HSPA cellular data. There’s still no word on pricing or availability, but Sprint’s EVO View 4G variant is pegged for June 24th, and rumor has it that T-Mobile could release the Flyer on the sixth of next month.
