What we have here, is a decidedly low-end Android tablet from the folks at MSI (possibly a member of the Enjoy family) flying through the FCC as fast as its single-core 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU and 512MB of RAM will carry it. Inside you’ll find Bluetooth and WiFi antennas, as well as enough room for a full-sized SD card, though oddly the user manual says this model (listed as MS-N0Y1) only supports sizes up to 8GB. Up front you’ll find a camera for video chatting, the requisite buttons for navigating the customized version of Gingerbread, and a 10-inch screen sporting a rather uninspiring 800×480 resolution. There’s a second camera around back, as well as the all important FCC tag. 20th Century Fox is dipping its downloading toes into the 21st century’s waters, releasing movies on Android in addition to good, old-fashioned Blu-ray. According to the Financial Times, retail discs of X-Men: First Class will direct owners to a website where they can sideload a digital version of the film onto their Android device of choice. Apparently some of the suits over at Fox caught wind of how popular Android tablets are getting, and now see them as complementary, not cannibalistic (remember that industry buzz kill?) Sure, right now you shouldn’t expect any Netflix-sized library of titles, but perhaps we can all agree this is a step in the right download-to-own direction. Residents of the US, UK, Germany, and France will get the first crack at downloading the films. The rest of you can just stream and wait.

BlackBerry used to rule the boardroom, but over the past few years we’ve seen a steady uptick in the number of enterprise users switching to their OS of choice. So who’s going to be the successor to the BlackBerry throne? Well, according to Good’s latest report, Apple devices have fast become the preferred companions for its customers, and it looks like the iPad’s leading the way. The enterprise provider shows that in Q2 2011, users activated more iPads than Android smartphones and tablets combined. What’s more, iPads made up 95 percent of tablet activations, with Android tablets taking in only 3.1 percent. Smartphone adoption was a slight bit more balanced, but Apple still came out on top with 66 percent over Android’s 33 percent. That’s all well and good, but what we really want to know is who’s got the stuff to win the three-legged race at the company picnic? Tell Sally Kimball to grab her bike, looks like we’re gonna have to leave Idaville to solve this mystery. What appears to be a brand new tablet from the fine folks at Lenovo just tried to sneak its way through the FCC, bearing the model numbers IdeaPad A1-07 and LePad A1-07. There is a chance, however remote, this could be LePad successor CEO Yang Yuanqing said would be coming in September or October. But, with the K1 and P1 having only recently emerged from the shadowy back alleys of Leaktown, it’s hard to imagine the Chinese manufacturer is already prepping a follow up. The “07” implies this could be a 7-inch sibling of those 10-inch slates, but we’re just taking shots in the dark. The only thing we know for certain is the A1-07 sports Bluetooth — not terribly surprising. If you’re the type who likes line graphs and regulatory labels make sure to hit up the source link.

We’ll give Nicholas Negroponte one thing, he’s nothing if not ambitious. The OLPC founder always has some pie-in-the-sky vision for the XO line of child-centric computers, including dual-screens and hand-cranks. Now that we’ve skipped right past the XO-2 for the ARM-powered, and still MIA, XO-3 it’s time for a whole new round of concepts. The latest is a series of accessory cases for the potentially Android-sporting tablets that boast satellite internet capabilities or solar panels for charging its battery. The former MIT Media Lab head has even suggested that a more mundane cover with a keyboard could be on tap. Of course, it would probably help if the foundation could get the machines out the door first. We haven’t heard much about the XO-3 since the last round of delays pushed its release back to February… of 2011. But you know what they say, better late, and all that jazz.

Last we heard from Viliv, one of the OGs of the MID and UMPC world, it was throwing its hat in the tablet arena with a pair of Android slates and a Wintel slab at CES. Now, rumor has it, the company is prepping to close up shop and make a graceful exit from a market segment it helped pioneer. This is according to sources talking to UMPC Portal, but there have been other clues. The manufacturer was conspicuously absent from Computex in June and, when we reached out to its PR line, our emails we’re bounced back as undeliverable. We’re not quite ready to start digging Viliv’s digital grave just yet but, in the face of competition from the likes of Samsung and Apple, we’d say the writing is on the wall.

RIM sure is working fast to bring its 500,000-strong BlackBerry Playbooks up to functional par. The tablet’s been on the market for three short months and is already set to receive its fourth software update. This go ’round, RIM added the ability to save attachments to a removable SD card or your phone’s internal storage, extract zip files from email (although you’ll have to use Bridge and port from your BlackBerry smartphone), a pinch-to-zoom feature for video viewing and — winner of the duh award — portrait viewing for photos. Also, the software now supports 15 additional languages — great news if you speak Galician. If you’re planning on picking up this QNX tab, you’ll receive the v1.0.7 update as part of the setup process. Current owners can wait for an update notification, or just pull it manually. So, what are you waiting for? Get downloading.
Update: And it’s gone. Seems some folks who downloaded the update were having connectivity issues using BlackBerry Bridge. RIM posted on Twitter saying users should expect a fix later this week.
