Motorola Xoom update rolling out starting tonight, brings ‘required enhancements’ for Flash 10.2

In the spirit of issuing software updates with the sole purpose of preparing for more software updates, Motorola says there’s about to be some brand new firmware for the Xoom, which will cross the Ts and dot the Is required to install the promised Adobe Flash Player 10.2. The company doesn’t say when, exactly, to expect Flash, only that it’s “coming soon,” but the update will also fix a bug with Daylight Savings Time, which — given recent history — should find itself richly welcomed. If you’re paying Verizon for 3G bandwidth, you can expect an OTA update in the days to come.

China clones the sliding netvertible tablet PC

We’d forgive you for thinking you’re looking at a smartphone in the picture above — seeing how HTC and Nokia owners have enjoyed this form factor for years — but that’s actually a netbook up there, sporting a full five-row keyboard and a desktop operating system. Yes, what took Samsung and ASUS until CES 2011 to realize has been copied by Shenzhen in two months flat, and even if you’d thumb your nose at its vanilla configuration (10-inch 1024 x 600 screen, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, 3700mAh lithium-ion battery) and optical touchpad next to the display, it’s hard for a lover of all things gadgety not to appreciate that. Besides, the 1,600 yuan (about $244) price tag doesn’t hurt any.

Hulu Plus on TiVo apparently being tested, live streaming to iPad apparently being considered

So, an update. Er, a refresher if you will. Back in September of last year, TiVo announced that ingrained Hulu Plus access would be coming to its DVRs “in the coming months,” but we’ve heard precisely nothing on the matter ever since. Enter the present. We’ve got a tipster who owns a TiVo Premiere and was just invited to join a Field Trial to “test Hulu Plus on TiVo,” and he’s also receiving codes to receive a free month of service. It’s hard to say what kind of gap we’re looking at between the testing period and the go-live period, but at least we’ve got a little assurance that no one simply forgot about their promise. In related news, other tipsters are starting to receive some fairly interesting surveys from TiVo itself, with a few questions in particular asking consumers how they’d feel about the option to “stream live TV, DVR recordings and TV shows from a cable company’s On Demand library to one’s iPad.” This seemingly includes in-home and remote streaming, and we have to say — streaming to the tablet just might be the magic feature that finally gets TiVo out of the hurt locker. Probably not, but are you really going to judge us for being blindly optimistic?

Best Buy Mulls Giving Tablets To Salespeople

bby-people.jpg

Imagine if you could go up to a product at Best Buy, find a nearby employee, and pay for it right there. That’s the kind of thing that might be possible if Best Buy’s latest plan comes to fruition.

The leading electronics retail chain is reportedly considering a plan that would aid some of its people on the floor by giving them a tablet. The retailer said it is looking at “handheld devices” for the plan, and reports suggest the iPad likely won’t be the winning device.

“We continue to evaluate all handheld devices and platforms, [looking] for the best solution to aid our employees on the floor,” said Best Buy in a Wall Street Journal story.

Switched On: Padded Windows

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

At the launch of the new iPad – superior for video chat, group presentations, and cutting cake — Apple didn’t miss a few opportunities to rub salt in the open air vents of Microsoft’s tablet efforts. Apple noted that sales of the iPad have exceeded those of every other tablet PC ever sold, and that Microsoft (along with other competitors) were chasing doomed strategies that extended outmoded models.

Microsoft has been clear that it will continue to use its “desktop” operating system – Windows – rather than its mobile operating system – the device-specifying Windows Phone 7 – as its operating system for tablets. Considering the critical importance of an intuitive touchscreen UI on tablet — where Windows Phone 7 excels and desktop Windows has struggled — this seems risky on its face. But it is important to remember from Microsoft’s perspective that the question is not whether Windows is the best choice for tablets but whether it is a better choice for Microsoft than Windows Phone. While the company faces an uphill battle regardless of which OS it chooses, its flagship could be the better answer for several reasons.

Olivetti launches OliPad tablet, second coming of the typewriter?

It’s a sign of the times: a company originally known for typewriters, and struggling to find its place in a tech-driven market, turns to manufacturing tablets. This week, Olivetti announced the release of the OliPad, staking its claim to a slice of the slab pie, and repositioning itself on the enterprise PC market. Heralded (at least by Olivetti) as Italy’s first tablet, the OliPad sports a 10-inch screen, 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth connectivity, NVIDIA Tegra 2, Android 2.2.2, and a 1024 x 600 display. It also features USB and HDMI ports and a 1.3 megapixel camera, but perhaps most telling is the simultaneous launch of the Application Warehouse, “a virtual storehouse of configurable and customizable software applications designed by Olivetti specifically for business and government.” Considering the vast and varied competition, we’d say sticking to what it knows — and Olivetti knows business solutions — is probably a safe bet. Now, if they could just make the thing look as good as the Olivetti Valentine… The OliPad goes on sale this Monday for €399. Full PR after the break.

[Thanks, Riccardo]

Samsung says Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still on schedule, iPad 2 be darned

Samsung may have been humbled by Apple’s iPad 2, but the company’s apparently not letting that affect its plans — without directly refuting statements by a Samsung VP that the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 was “inadequate” or might be priced cheaper than originally intended, the company told the Yonhap News Agency that the tablet will be released on schedule. In other words, the Honeycomb tablet’s not getting any thinner or lighter, but something’s gotta give, and Samsung’s not quite ready to say just what that is.

Motorola Xoom on Sale at Sam’s Club, Apparently

 moto tablet point.jpg

The Wi-Fi version of  the Motorola Xoom has apparently been spotted at Sam’s Club for the low, low price of $539.99. Photos have been floating around the Web showing the Xoom selling for a slightly lower price than the iPad.

Could this mark the beginning of a tablet pricing war? With the original iPad price dropping, other manufactures need to price the tablets accordingly.

Are Tablets Ruining Watching TV Together? [Etiquette]

TV socializing is something of an oxymoron to begin with. When we sit down to watch the tube together, we’re mostly together in the strictest technical sense—couch proximity. We might share popcorn, or laugh in unison, or murmur something about how so-and-so got fat—but it ain’t exactly a meeting of the minds. Our eyes—and brains—are focused on the screen. So is adding a tablet to reach thousands estranging us from the actual people we’re with? More »
