LG’s 55-inch LW9800 3D HDTV earns THX certification, our home theater respect

Let’s face it. We live in a world chock full of entertainment options. With more means of accessing the visual goods, comes less reason to leave the house. Well, LG’s aiming to make the cinema experience even more passé with its 55-inch Nano Full LED Cinema LW9800 3D HDTV set. Recently shown off at CEDIA 2011, the slim, flat panel is the first passive 3D display to garner THX certification, delivering HD enthusiasts closer to true “movie experiences.” The 480Hz TV utilizes film-pattern retarder tech to optimize 3D image separation, and also includes LG’s Smart TV suite of streaming video services (Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, et al.) and app store. So, if you’re ready to roll your eyes at Lucas’ latest tweaks from the comfort of your couch, get set to fork over $3,800 and join the at-home grousing.

LG, Sharp and Philips to build developer’s kit, create Smart TV app standard

A triumvirate of television titans — LG, Sharp and Philips — are joining forces to create a development kit, defining a common standard for their Smart TV apps. The power play addresses the problem of fragmentation, since developers will only need to make one version of an app for it to work across all three of the ‘tubes operating systems. Based on open standards like HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV, developers should get their hands on a beta version by early October, with the finalized version due by the end of the year. The better question now is whether the Romanesque trio can drum up enough developer support to beat out competitors in an app-tastic coup d’etat, or if the likes of Vizio, Sony and Samsung will eventually join in. Needless to say, we’ll be digging for more at CEDIA later this month.

The coolest thing I saw at IFA: LG’s passive clip-on 3D glasses


Berlin’s Internationalen Funkausstellung is by no means an unexciting consumer electronics show. Sure, there aren’t nearly as many new gadgets to play with as you’ll find at even the tamest year of CES, but there’s still plenty else around to leave almost any tech buff feeling full. Still, this year’s most exciting gadget — to me, at least — wasn’t a new tablet, or cell phone, or even that Android-controlled robotic vacuum. No, the highlight of my week was these clip-on 3D glasses, which LG reps handed out to every interested spectator as they entered the company’s booth. These dead-simple, yet completely life-changing specs were almost certainly overlooked by the 20/20 vision-abled, but for folks like me who can’t stand sliding one pair of glasses over another just to watch Kung Fu Panda in three dimensions, those clip-ons you see above are the absolute best swag I could ever hope to find.

There’s really not much to them. The 3D experience was identical to what you’ll get with traditional passive glasses — these simply clip on top of your eyeglasses, rather than resting on their own. They also offer UV protection, and “communicate seamlessly with the TV.” Well alright then. While attendees could get their own pair for free at IFA, you can also find these online for about 20 bucks — sold as the LG AG-F220. I’d like to see them become much more widely available, and more affordable as well. So listen up, Hollywood: if you ever again want me to hand over five extra bucks at the box office to watch an animated bear kick his furry paw directly toward my temple, these better be waiting on the other side of the ticket scan.

LG E2391VR LED LCD Monitor hands-on

When it comes to having the world’s slimmest display, competition is fierce, and technicalities abound. One manufacturer in particular makes that class-leading claim more often than others, however, so it was no surprise when LG decided to show off a “world slimmest monitor” at its enormous IFA hall this year. The E2391VR is, as expected, incredibly thin. At 7.2mm, it’s noticeably skinnier than the 9.3mm iPhone 4, so if you actually spend time looking at the side of your display, you’ll probably really like this one. But — and this, as with other models, can be a very big but for some users — all of the ports, and most of the critical components, are in the TV’s base. The 23-inch model we saw is rather small to wall-mount, so that base shouldn’t be an issue for most. It offers 1080p video, a 2ms response time, HDMI, D-sub, headphone out, and a “10,000,000:1 contrast ratio” — and, well, it looks great too, though reflections were a glaring issue in the bright exhibit hall. No word on pricing or availability just yet, but jump past the break for some PR magic.

Google remains committed to TV business, expects more partners soon

Wondering what Mountain View has in store for Google TV — that half-baked content platform available on only a small handful of devices? Well, it’s not going away, apparently, and may even cross the Atlantic into Europe next year. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt is currently making waves in Scotland, giving Edinburgh International Television Festival attendees a rather vague overview of what the next generation of Google TV may look like. Schmidt said that the service has yet to take off because it’s currently integrated with (a rather limited selection of) TVs, which we don’t tend to upgrade more than once or twice a decade. He added that additional hardware and content partners will be coming soon, though, and didn’t deny that Google TV could end up on Motorola cable boxes — an obvious move, given the company’s recent acquisition announcement. With widespread implementation and many more content partners, Google TV could definitely be a hit, but with ABC, NBC and CBS still unwilling to come onboard, the struggling service likely has a very rocky road ahead before it can be deemed a success.

Beyond the iPad: What’s Next for Apple

Much has been said about the amazing contributions Steve Jobs has made to the technology world as Apple’s leader. But what can we expect from Apple now that Jobs has stepped down as CEO?

New CEO Tim Cook has assured employees that “Apple is not going to change,” and a peek at what we’ll see from Cupertino suggests Apple plans to remain on the vanguard.

A look at some patents Apple has sought and received offers a lay of the land.

Game-Changing Apple TV

Longtime Apple watcher Walt Mossberg says “rumors are rife that Apple is working on re-inventing another common device: the TV. The secretive company won’t say a word about that, but nobody should be surprised if it happens, just based on Jobs’ track record.”

Rather than just churning out a set-top box like Apple TV, Cupertino may be working on a smart TV with iOS integration. Some say it will be a 55-inch OLED TV.

A patent for “An Enhanced TV Widget Paradigm” suggests Apple will ditch conventional static widgets (present on current smart TVs and smart-TV upgraders), in favor of content-aware widgets that provide information or activities that complement what you’re watching.

Devices With a Hybrid LCD, E-Ink Display

Another patent filing suggests Apple will deliver an iPhone and iPad with a hybrid LCD, e-ink display. The “electronic paper” display would allow for easier reading in bright sunlight, or in situation where a backlit LCD is too harsh.

The patent describes a screen with “multiple composite display regions” featuring individually activated backlights that could be turned on or off to display some content (like text on a web page) in the appropriate scenario. Such a display would require significantly less power than conventional displays, improving battery life.

One way this could be implemented would be to sandwich a transparent e-ink display between a capacitive touchscreen and either an LCD or OLED.

Integrated Projector in Mobile Devices

Future Apple mobile devices will include an integrated projector.

The patent describes how the projector would display information on a flat surface like a wall. Multiple devices could be combined to display a single image in a “unified display mode.”

The projector would be able to interpret gestures and silhouette movements. For example, an image could be swiped from the projected display of one device, to that of another.

Voice Identification

No more swiping your finger or entering a passcode to unlock your iGadget. The next wave of iOS devices could use voice identification to switch out of its lockscreen.

This already exists in numerous devices, but in a different way: These systems use large word libraries that can complicate voice-input analysis. Apple’s solution would identify users by the sound of their voice. That person could use voice inputs to navigate their device without worrying about the chatterbox across the room or raising their voice to bark out commands.

By tracking the voice of each user, the system could be dynamically tailored to their interests and unique needs. Multiple users could share the device, but specific content or contacts would remain unique to each individual user.

OSX and iOS Full Convergence

By the end of 2012, we may see iOS and OSX converge into a unified operating system.

“Users want to be able to pick up any iPhone, iPad or Mac (or turn on their iTV) and have content move seamlessly between them and be optimized for the user and the device currently being used,” said Peter Misek, an analyst with Jefferies.

Devices running iOS and OSX currently use different processors. Once all Apple computing devices — iPhones, iPads and MacBooks or MacBook Airs — run the same processor, likely ARM, it will be easier for them to support the same operating system. Users could easily share information and files between devices (especially when used in conjunction with iCloud).

We’ve already seen how OSX Lion has adopted features from iOS, like natural scrolling and LaunchPad, which resembles the iPad’s home screen.

Workplace Integration

With these innovations and others, we also expect Apple to take the business enterprise industry by storm. This isn’t quite an innovation in itself on Apple’s part, but a result of their products, their applications and the platform.

“Apple is the first and only vendor that really supports the enterprise platform,” says Brian Fino, founder and managing director of Fino Consulting, which provides enterprise solutions for Fortune 1000 companies. “We’ve seen a dramatic and significant shift toward Apple products, the iPad in particular. And with iOS 5’s over-the-air upgrades, users will have untethered management of devices.”

Many consumers like bringing in their iPad (or other Apple devices) to and from work, and have requested enterprise solutions from Fino’s company. Airplay currently allows for wireless streaming from the iPad to an HDTV via Apple TV. As Apple continues to support and expand this capability, businesses will find these products increasingly useful and convenient.
