Hasta La Gadget!

Sorry, gents, but your conspiracy theories are wholly kaput — not only is a Samsung Galaxy S getting Android 2.2 stateside, but the speedy software update will start rolling out tomorrow on T-Mobile USA. That’s the word direct from T-Mo chief marketing officer Cole Brodman, who tossed the news to PC Magazine this afternoon, saying that the delay was a “quality control and timing issue.” Apparently, there’s extra work involved in skinning the operating system and adding exclusive apps like WiFi calling — though he didn’t confirm either would specifically appear in the Vibrant’s build of Froyo. Here’s some more welcome news, though: the gentleman promised that in general, Android updates on T-Mobile will be more prompt from now on, as the firm’s shooting to update all phones to new versions within five months of Google making source code available. Does that mean we should expect some Gingerbread men by May? We’re not totally sure, but we imagine that T-Mobile’s rivals aren’t sitting still — we’ll probably hear some fascinating, captivating and totally epic news about Froyo any minute now.

Perhaps Samsung’s Vibrant 4G won’t be tied to Froyo, after all. Although the initial leak suggested Android 2.2, Boy Genius Report’s managed to obtain what it suggests is an in-the-wild shot with a lock screen that looks remarkably reminiscent of the aesthetic touches from Android 2.3 Gingerbread. No TouchWiz UI here, but word on the street (i.e. from its source) is Sammy’s hard at work to remedy that disconnect and make the skin jibe with the new version. And if that’s not enough, TmoNews is claiming a leaked document that indicates Vibrant 4G will launch February 23rd. Back to the picture, though: if that timestamp is at all accurate, and this is really just hours fresh, perhaps that lucky right-handed gent can snap a few more convincing shots while it charges.

Update: As a number of readers have pointed out, there’s some odd discrepancies between this image and the Gingerbread lock screen we all know, chief among them the inclusion of AM / PM in the top bar (that option doesn’t exist in actual 2.3. we just checked to be sure). Brief Mobile’s got a more nuanced breakdown, but the point is, this looks to be either a half-baked ROM or the work of a certain Robin Goodfellow.

Now that the country’s two biggest carriers have the country’s biggest smartphone, the question is, who’s next? After years of rumors and speculation, Verizon yesterday announced that it is finally going to offer the iPhone.

So, what about T-Mobile and Sprint. Would they be interested in carrying Apple’s wildly popular handset? In a word, “yes.” T-Mobile USA’s new CEO Philipp Humm told The Seattle Times , “We would be interested in offering the iPhone, but ultimately it is Apple’s decision.” Apple, naturally, didn’t respond to a follow up question.

T-Mobile recently sent out a press invite for an upcoming event. Wishful thinking, perhaps?

What, you didn’t forget about the Cliq series, did you? The followup to Motorola and T-Mobile’s slider’s been long rumored — we heard a few morsels of information back in September — and now CellPhoneSignal has a few pics of what it claims is the Begonia, aka Cliq 2 (for T-Mobile, naturally). The keyboard here is, well, interesting, to say the least, and there’s also apparently a five megapixel camera on the back. We’re not really sure how our thumbs feel about the layout, but if this is legit, we’d reckon they’ll get to try it out themselves sooner or later. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. You know our thoughts on the device, so let’s assume you’ve passed the “should I buy it?” question and onto the more specific, “whom should I sign on with?” You’re certainly not bereft of choices: by the end of November, five of the six largest US carriers (sorry, MetroPCS) will offer the Android slate — but not all pricing schemes were made equal. Carrier-agnostics, we’re here to help!

While we’ve already bemoaned the $50 premium on AT&T’s model, we have confirmed there is no activation fee, which narrows the price between it and Verizon’s offering to just $15 (and Ma Bell, along with Sprint, seem to be the only two offering a $50 Media Hub voucher). On paper, US Cellular has the lowest two-year cost with $760 on contract, but $15 monthly for 200MB is pretty ridiculous when just $20 gets you an entire gig on Verizon’s network, or $30 for 2GB on Sprint. T-Mobile wins the award for the most insane disparity in data offerings: $25 for 200MB, or 25 times the data allotment (5GB) for just $15 more. ‘Twas the best of deals, ’twas the worst of deals.

If you ask us, there isn’t really a clear-cut winner, but we’d definitely contend Big Magenta’s got the most alluring on-contract value if 5GB is in the range of your data usage; the equivalent plan costs $60 on Sprint and $50 on Verizon, with the latter offering no discount for making a two-year commitment. Then again, if you’re the kind who prefers to be unrestrained and plan to spend $600 regardless, it’s Verizon with the most competitive data plans overall. And of course, your decision will undoubtedly be influenced by network performance in your area. Consider yourself informed.
