Hasta La Gadget!

So, TransferJet hasn’t exactly taken off the way many had hoped, especially Sony which crammed the wireless tech into CyberShot cameras and Memory Sticks. But some, like Toshiba, are still holding on to the dream. By the end of January 2012 Tosh plans to ship samples of its new TC35420 TransferJet chip to manufacturers, which can move files at an impressive 560Mbps. The short-range, high-speed sharing protocol could make moving photos, videos and other media between your smartphones, tablets and laptops quick and easy… or it could just become another feature that lies dormant in a few select products collecting piles of virtual dust. It only started showing up in products last year, so we’re not ready to put a nail in its coffin just yet — we’ll just have to see if the tech can finally live up to it promise of painless connectivity.

It looks like the AT200 isn’t the only Toshiba tablet poised to land in time for the holidays. The company just announced the Thrive 7″, a (surprise!) 7-inch version of the original. Like its big brother, it runs on Tegra 2 and packs twin 5 MP / 2 MP cameras, though this time around that textured, rubberized back isn’t removable, and the rear-facing camera comes paired with an LED flash. As you’d expect, in exchange for a smaller form factor (0.88 pounds, half an inch thick), you’ll be giving up the full-sized ports that made the original so unique. Instead, it offers a more typical selection, including mini-USB and micro-HDMI sockets, a headphone jack, docking connector and a microSD slot. Like pretty much every 7- and 8-incher trickling into the market, it runs Android 3.2, and Toshiba did us the favor of leaving it completely unskinned (it did include Swype as a keyboard option, though). No word yet on pricing or availability, though a Toshiba rep confirmed that 16GB and 32GB models will go on sale by early December with a starting price of “less than $400.” How low is Toshiba willing to go? Your guess is good as ours but until then, you can meet us past the break for some early impressions and a short vid, too.

Monday morning is hardly the time for philosophical questions, but here’s one anyway: should manufacturers refresh product lines if they’re not adding anything new? Toshiba’s Canvio 3.0 external HDDs announced today have pretty much identical specs to the Canvio 3.0 Plus drives already available on Amazon: capacities from 500GB to 1TB, prices from $90 to $140 and the inclusion some cloud backup software worth around $40. The pocket-sized drives come in a range of colors and it’s hypothetically possible that they’ll look better than their predecessors, but we can’t be sure until we get product photos instead of the plain render you see on the right. Meanwhile, things get relatively more interesting when we come to the Canvio Basics range, which make a few sacrifices to come in $10 cheaper and which at least now come with USB 3.0. Enough with the nihilism already.

Here’s one that momentarily escaped our attention during all the IFA hullabaloo: the Qosmio DX730, which Toshiba says borrows both its design and ‘Resolution+’ picture processing technology from Regza TVs. The base model bears a rather lousy Pentium processor, but the range also includes Core i3 and i5 models, along with up to 6GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, a Blu-ray drive, TV tuner and Onkyo speakers. The multi-touch Full HD 23-inch panel also works in its favor. Pricing has yet to be announced, although Akihabara reports a similar bunch of models in Japan starting at a rather incredible ¥120,000 ($1500). We’ll have to rely on the Dell Vostro 360 to keep Toshiba’s expected margins firmly in check.
