Toshiba’s new Regza WL800A HDTV hooks up with your smartphone via MHL

The MHL Consortium wants to banish HDMI ports from our phones in favor of its Mobile High-Definition Link connection, and the tech has found its way into handsets like the GSII and the EVO 3D. But until now, there were no TVs to connect to. Toshiba’s latest in the Regza line, the WL800A, is the lone set in its 2011 lineup to pack the 5-pin port that pulls 1080p from your mobile device and puts it up on a 46-inch or 55-inch edge-lit LED panel. Best part is, the MHL connection pushes power back into your phone at the same time video is streaming — so you don’t have to worry about your phone dying on you in the middle of your mobile movie marathon. Currently for sale in the land of Oz for $2,329 (46-inch) and $3,179 (55-inch) AUD, the WL800 won’t be coming to America. However, now that the GSII has landed stateside let’s hope some MHL-equipped TVs follow suit.

Will Toshiba’s next tablet be named the Excite? Trademark filings suggest so

Yesterday, we caught wind of a rumor that Toshiba would be unveiling a new, ultra-thin tablet at this year’s IFA. Today, word on the street is that the company’s forthcoming slate may be called the “Excite.” According to US Trademark filings obtained by Android Police, Toshiba has apparently registered the purported product name under the category “Tablet Computers.” The manufacturer has also snatched up a whole host of domain names, including “excitetablet.com,” “toshibaexcite.com,” and “thetoshibaexcite.com” — all of which currently redirect to a Toshiba site. As you may recall, remarkably similar evidence surfaced right before the Thrive launched, so recent history certainly lends a bit of credence to today’s report. Toshiba rumored to be announcing ultra-thin tablet at IFA after chunky Thrive did anything but

With a tablet market dominated by the svelte iPad 2, a device with a “chunky design” isn’t bound to Thrive. According to Notebook Italia, Toshiba’s expected to announce a new ultra-thin tablet at IFA this week, swapping full-size USB and HDMI ports for micro-USB, micro HDMI, and microSD slots in order to shave off a few millimeters from last year’s model, leaving the new device with a sleeker, much more appealing design. The rumored slate is expected to ship with a TI OMAP4460 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, an edge-to-edge screen, and a brushed-metal housing. Other specs, including Android version and screen size are a bit thin at this point, but we should have only a few more days to wait before Toshiba’s new tab makes its glorious IFA debut in Berlin.

Toshiba Smarbo takes on dirt, Roomba, music playing prowess unclear

Toshiba is just the latest company to enter the robovac fray. Samsung, ASUS and LG have already tested the waters against the mighty iRobot, now it’s Smarbo’s turn to try its hand at automated vacuuming. Inside the round floor cleaner are 38 sensors that help it avoid obstacles and keep it from falling down stairs, as well as a CPU or CPUs that sport “double brain function” according to the machine translated PR. The bot is quite quick, supposedly able to clean 100 square meters (over 1,000 square feet) in about 90 minutes, and only uses a few pennies worth of electricity to do so. Toshiba’s vacubot will hit shelves in Japan for around $1,100 on October first, but it does suffer one distinct disadvantage — DJ Smarbo just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

When NVIDIA played its signature GPU number-bump card back in May, it made a point to throw around some big names. Alienware, MSI and ASUS each announced notebooks with the outfit’s new GeForce GTX 560M, but one lone machine played coy, listed only as the “new Toshiba gaming laptop.” Known today as the Qosmio X775-3DV78, it pairs 1.5GB GDDR5 with the aforementioned GPU, an Intel Core i7-2630QM processor, 1.25TB of storage split between two drives and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. So, can this heavyweight desktop-replacement hold its own in Engadget’s review ring? There’s only one way to find out.

SandForce demos 24nm flash from Toshiba, cheaper SSDs on the horizon

SandForce, the company behind the companies that make some of the best SSDs on the market, is at it again — this time demoing 24nm NAND flash from Toshiba at the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara, CA. An SF-2000 processor was matched with the new shrunk-down storage, a 6Gb/sec SATA connection, and jammed inside a 2.5-inch enclosure to deliver 500MB/sec read and write speeds. It’s not the fastest we’ve seen, but the big news here isn’t the data rates — it’s the potential for cheaper SSDs. The smaller manufacturing process means Toshiba will be able to squeeze more storage out of the same wafer of silicon and, hopefully, shrink those still somewhat bloated prices. Toshiba Introduces First Glasses-Free 3-D Notebook

The Toshiba Qosmio F755 will deliver 2-D or glasses-free 3-D content on a 15.6-inch display

One of the biggest obstacles to 3-D adoption in the home is the requirement for uncomfortable, eye-straining glasses.

Now there is an alternative, at least in the laptop department.

Today Toshiba introduced the world’s first glasses-free 3-D notebook. The Qosmio F755 has an Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDA GeForce 540M graphics, as well as Harmon Kardon speakers, a Blu-ray drive and HDMI output. It can display content in either 2-D or 3-D.

To achieve a 3-D effect without glasses, the F755 uses an auto-stereoscopic display. This works by creating a double parallax image: Two images are projected simultaneously, and face-tracking technology (through the laptop’s built-in webcam) customizes the image based on the viewer’s position, delivering one image for the left eye, and one for the right.

This allows for a “broad viewing zone from which to view 3-D content,” according to the press release. But this may also mean two people won’t be able to watch the screen in 3-D at the same time.

In another effort to make 3-D more compelling to consumers, yesterday Panasonic, Sony and Samsung teamed up to announce their support of the “Full HD 3-D Glasses Initiative,” which would mean one brand of glasses could be worn to view all of their 3-D TV models. But so far, mobile devices, like the glasses-free 3-D Nintendo 3DS seem to be enjoying marginally more success than larger-displayed counterparts.

Although a glasses-free 3-D notebook may fare better than glasses-requiring models, stats from a March 2011 survey by research firm ABI Research still show consumers aren’t overly excited by the technology.

Forty percent of respondents said they have no interest in a 3D-ready TV, and only 8 percent said they are considering a 3-D TV purchase within the next six months. Approximately 1.76 percent of the total flat-panel TV shipments in 2010 were 3-D capable (that’s 3.5 million sets).

“Most 3-D HDTV purchases are being driven by other features, specifically screen size, price, display technology, refresh rate and internet connectivity,” said Jason Blackwell, Practice Director of Digital Home for ABI Research. “In addition, many of the current 3D-ready models have been discounted significantly and/or additional incentives have been offered including a free Blu-ray player, free glasses and even a free PlayStation 3. For the most part, consumers are not clamoring for 3-D-ready TVs and other 3-D devices.”

And the same seems to be true for notebook computers and other mobile devices.

“In our March 2011 survey, only 28 percent of people listed 3-D capability as an important factor in their purchase decision for a new notebook computer. Processor speed and memory came in as the most important factors with 88 percent choosing each of those,” Blackwell said. As for smartphones, 58 percent of respondents said they had zero interest in a 3-D capable smartphone.

Tablet Makers Hope Cheaper Means Better Sales

If you can’t beat ‘em, undercut ‘em.

It’s the new slogan of tablet and smartphone manufacturers trying to push products into an already packed space.

Companies are attempting to compete in today’s crowded tablet market by slashing product prices to undercut rivals. The iPad, the front-runner in the field, set the entry-level price for tablets at $500. It’s the price to beat.

And many companies are trying hard to beat Apple. Toshiba’s recently debuted Thrive tablet starts at $430, while Acer’s Iconia Tab A500 costs $450. As recently as last week, HP announced steep discounts on its TouchPad tablet, which was originally priced at $500. TV manufacturer Vizio announced a new tablet today priced at $300, one of the cheapest Android tablet options to hit the market.

It’s the latest attempt by Android tablet manufacturers to combat the problem that essentially all of them face: differentiation. With some exceptions, many of today’s Android tablets offer microSD card slots, HDMI output, 3G connectivity and other common attributes. Essentially, they all do the same thing. And beyond customizing the user interface to make the tablet’s operating system look different than others, there’s not much the manufacturers can do.

“As the devices become more and more alike, manufacturers will do anything they can to differentiate themselves,” Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney told Wired.com in June.

Ports, UI tweaks and connectivity options aren’t enough. Now they want to lure you in with a bargain-bin price tag.

It’s a similar story for smartphones. Samsung recently debuted the Conquer 4G, one of the first low-end Android phones to run on Sprint’s WiMax network. ZDNet reporter Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft may be working on its own low-end Windows Phone operating system, codenamed “Tango.” And of course, we’ve had feature phones available to consumers for a long time, made specifically for those who don’t want to shell out wads of cash on the latest and greatest mobile device.

Despite the growing adoption of smartphones, most of the global population still thinks cheaper is better — for phones, at least. Nielsen research claims over 55 percent of U.S. mobile phone owners have low-end phones.

Tango isn’t much more than a rumor circulating in tech circles at this point. Yet in the wake of Nokia announcing it would move away from pushing its low-end Symbian operating system on North American low-end phones (as reported earlier today by AllThingsD), the Tango rumors begin to make a certain amount of sense. Especially considering Nokia’s big bet on Windows-based phones this year.

But there’s a difference the smartphone and tablet markets that manufacturers aren’t yet taking into account. Phones are an integral part of how our society functions today. We use cellular devices on a daily basis, relying on them more and more as they’ve grown “smarter.”

Tablets are a different story.

“The tablet market, though growing, is not mass-market yet,” Gartner analyst Phillip Redman said. “Buyers today are still early adopters and are less concerned about cost versus functionality.”

Few manufacturers outside of Apple are broadcasting tablet sales widely, which suggests sales of non-Apple tablets aren’t as high as manufacturers would like. And yet, as Redman said, it’s an emerging market, one that is still forming with each new tablet release. It’s far too early to tell whether or not the low price strategy will pan out.

But one thing is certain: Even with all the discount tablet options currently available, many people are willing to pony up $500 for Apple’s tablet. In the company’s last earnings report, Apple announced it sold close to 10 million iPads over the past three months alone. Compare that to the 440,000 Xoom tablets Motorola shipped — not sold, but shipped to retailers — last quarter, and the picture becomes pretty clear.
