WowWee’s Light Strike makes laser tag look more like Paper Jamz

WowWee, the same folks who brought you Paper Jamz, are giving yet another American leisure-time institution a makeover, and this time they’ve set their sights on laser tag. Carrying over the Paper Jamz aesthetic, Light Strike aims to “bring video game action into the real-world” with a set of laser tag guns and accessories that sport fingerprint ID, long-range LED targeting, built-in health and ammo meters, and the ability to play with up to four teams of unlimited size. The game’s stable of weapons includes Light Strike’s signature gun, the Assault Striker, a machine gun bipod with recoil action, a scope attachment with 100-foot range, and a grenade launcher that can shoot groups of enemies down in a single shot. Now, who’s going to lead the campaign to make the Assault Striker the official gun of the 2012 Olympic Pentathalon? Light Strike is set for an August 2011 launch with guns starting at about $40, but you can get a very dramatic preview after the jump.

Toy Fair 2011: Gearlog’s Top Picks

With the end of another Toy Fair looming, we’ve rounded up five of our favorite things from this year’s show. Check out the list, after the jump.

The Best Stuff at Toy Fair 2011 [Play]

We spend a whole day wandering through our favorite fair of the year, and we had a lot of fun playing around every shiny thing we could find. Here is all the best stuff: More »

New Hot Wheels Toy Is Basically a Flip Camera With Wheels

hot wheels camera.jpg

During our tour of the Mattel booth at this year’s Toy Fair, the company repeatedly hammered home the point that it’s looking for creative new ways to sell its Hot Wheels line to older folks–those who grew up on the toys–including a new Funny or Die video starring Jeremy “Mercury Poisoning” Piven.
The new Video Racer line is hands-down the coolest innovation for the brand. These standard Hot Wheels-sized vehicles have a built-in video came on their hood and an LCD on the bottom. They’re really tiny Flip Cameras with wheels. Set them on a track and they’re shoot up to 12 minutes of video footage at a 1:64 scale.
They charge and sync via USB and ship with simple video editing software, so you can make your own highlight real. The cars will be out this fall for $60.

Air Swimmers Flying Shark Blimp

WMC had folks crowded around its booth at Toy Fair yesterday, thanks almost entirely to its new Air Swimmers line. The concept is pretty simple–the blimps are basically remote controlled helicopters built into mylar balloons. One is shaped like a shark, the other is shaped like a clownfish. The tail, meanwhile, serves as a rudder.
You can do all of the normal remote control blimp things with the Air Swimmers–in fact, the guy from the company kept dive bombing us as we were attempting to take pictures of the thing.
The Flying Shark and Flying Clownfish are available now, for $39.99 a piece.

The Guy With the Worst Job at Toy Fair?

mentos.JPG

The worst kept secret of Toy Fair is the fact that the convention is really just a gather of grownups playing with toys. As fun as all that sounds, I imagine that even something like demoing toys can get a bit tedious after several days. Particularly for this guy.
He was showing off the latest Coke/Mentos-based products from Be Amazing, a company that has really made a name for itself by showing people the right way to drop candy into soda.
He spent the show locked in a plastic booth, covered in sugary soda and breath freshener runoff. As I watched for a few moments, a woman standing next to me whispered to her friend, “he’s got the worst job at Toy Fair.”
I’m not sure where I come out on that declaration. He seemed to be having a fine time. Maybe four days of playing with toys in a giant plastic box isn’t so bad, after all…

Fijit: A Creepy, Cool Robot for Girls – Video

fijit.JPG

After witnessing Mattel’s new line of robotic toys for for girls, I’ll say this–Fijits are cool. And really, really creepy. The toys have a decidedly Teletubby like quality to them. They’re made of a soft, silicone-like material. They respond to voice commands, dance, and can have something approaching a conversation.  Fijit can recognize words and has more than 150 pre-programmed phrases.

The Fijits also have “Sonic Chirp” technology, which can unlock pre-installed features with external devices like mobile apps, TV commercials, etc.. She’s hitting the market in fall for $50.

Video of dancing, joking, and one really, really enthusiastic spokeswoman, after the jump.

Rockstar Mickey in Action – Video

The most amusing experiences of this year’s Toy Fair? Watching Rock Star Mickey in action was certainly up there. Disney’s public domain-proof rodent was strutting his stuff in the Fisher-Price booth, to a customized version of the 60s Kinks jam, “You Really Got Me.”

Mickey does the Chuck Berry duckwalk, bobs his head, does the splits–everything short of a full Pete Townshend windmill, really. He’ll hit the market in September, priced at $49.99.

Video (the best part, naturally) after the jump.

LEGO’s 2011 Line: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean

toy fair 2011 lego pod racer.jpg

Toy Fair 2011’s here! Gearlog was on the floor of the show yesterday at the Javits Center in midtown Manhattan. As always, a trip to the convention wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the LEGO booth, a walled-off, appointment-only spot in the middle of the showroom floor. And, as always, LEGO didn’t disappoint.
After the jump, check out a gallery of some of the highlights from the show. We’ve got shots of upcoming products from popular lines like Star Wars [the pod racer is above], Harry Potter, Spongebob Squarepants, Ninjago, and more. Also, some images from the company’s new Pirates of the Caribbean line, which includes scenes from the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Stranger Tides.
