Pleo RB robosaur now on sale for $469, Christmas now cleared to take place

Worried that your holiday celebrations just wouldn’t be able to take place without an autonomous robotic dinosaur roaming the halls and frightening the grandparents? Fret no more. With under a fortnight to go, Innvo Labs has managed to put the revitalized Pleo RB (Pleo Reborn, if you must know) on sale, with a stiff $469 getting you a newborn dinosaur with a Li-Polymer battery, a charging cradle and a training leaf. Yeah, a training leaf. Unfortunately, the MSRP here is a fair bit higher than the $350 that Ugobe charged for the original, but at least the price premium does include a tougher hide, a newfangled RFID sensing system and a stronger, longer-lasting battery. And really, who could say no to a smile like that?

Li’l Android Stocking Stuffer for Android Lovers

lilandroid.jpgWhat should you get as a Christmas stocking stuffer for the Android lover in your life? How about one of these cute li’l Androids?

At a recent visit to New York City vinyl toy emporium and art gallery My Plastic Heart I found a stock of these $7.50 collectible Android figurines, part of a limited edition created by artist Andrew Bell. The figurines are sold out on Bell’s Web site, but they’re still available through My Plastic Heart’s Web shop.

Bell’s limited-run li’l Androids sell out very quickly; a special “snowman” edition sold out within days. So if you’re an Android fan, I’d snap up these little guys from My Plastic Heart (or any other store where you find ’em) pretty quickly. If they run out, maybe you can go with one of ThinkGeek’s plush Androids.
(Full disclosure: My Plastic Heart, as an art gallery, also shows my wife Leontine Greenberg’s paintings.)

Wheeme massage robot asks where it hurts to drive away the pain

Former Israeli electronics and defense engineers wouldn’t be the first group of people we’d peg to leap into the robot massager biz, but that’s exactly who’s behind the Wheeme from DreamBots inc. According to the firm’s about page, the Wheeme was developed to meet “the increasing demand for smart products that offer the natural feeling of caressing, relaxation, falling asleep and even just tickling.” True to those goals, the device works by moving slowly across a person’s body to provide a gentle massage using its soft silicone rubber “fingerettes” (a.k.a wheels). Special tilt sensor technology ensures it won’t fall off or lose grip while motoring either — making the Wheeme a master at its trade — at least for customers lying down. Officially this rover will start shipping in the spring of 2011, but pre-ordering the device which costs $49 plus shipping will guarantee you don’t miss out on any of the drive by goodness. To view the Wheeme going to work while narrowly avoiding crashes, check out the embedded video after the break.

A Parrot Flies in Canada

Parrot_ARDrone_10.jpg

Our neighbors to the north can now enjoy one of the season’s hottest toys. The Parrot AR.Drone is flying into Canada, arriving at Best Buy. If you haven’t heard about it, the Parrot AR. Drone is a quadricopter that the user controls with an iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad. Besides taking flight, if combines real and virtual worlds. A front camera lets the pilot see what the Parrot is seeing right on their iOS device.

A hallmark of the Parrot is that it’s easy to fly indoors or out. It works with the AR.FreeFlight app in the iTunes Store and creates its own Wi-Fi network for easy connections. Once in the air, the Parrot mirrors all movements made by the iOS device while the pilots left thumb is on the control button. The copter retails for $349 Canadian.

Computer Engineer Barbie now available, and her phone has been upgraded since we last saw her

We were fairly impressed with Computer Engineer Barbie‘s Linux laptop and cellphone when we last saw her at the Toy Fair in New York City. Well, the doll is available now, and her gear has gotten an upgrade for the retail version. The pink laptop now boasts some kind of custom Barbie operating system, and yes, she seems to be sporting an iPhone these days. We assume this is a tie in with Mattel’s Barbie ‘I Can Be’ iPhone app, but we also remember from our childhood that Barbie is an intense tech geek who always has to have the latest gear, so we can’t say that we’re surprised. Computer Engineer Barbie is available now for $12.99. A shot of the first Computer Engineer Barbie we met is after the break.

Put Your Data on a Light Cycle with a TRON: Legacy USB Drive

TRON Legacy USB Drives

There are TRON-themed gaming mice, TRON-themed motorcycle suits, TRON-themed 3D Glasses, and now, if you couldn’t get enough TRON: Legacy merchandise ahead of the movie’s release, you can grab one of these TRON: Legacy USB flash drives in the shape of light cycles to store your data on. Choose the model of light cycle you prefer, dump your data, and impress everyone in that business meeting by bringing up your presentation on one of these stylish USB drives.
The Kevin Flynn light cycle (shown in white, from the first movie) comes in 8GB, and the Sam Flynn model (in black, from the new movie) is 4GB, and both are available from Toys R’ Us stores or online. They’ll cost you $34.99 and $24.99 retail, respectively.

Huey the Chameleon Lamp Matches the Color He’s Sitting On

Probably the most adorable light source I’ve ever seen, Huey the Color Changing Chameleon Lamp combines an optical sensor and LEDs in various colors to duplicate the color of any surface you rest him on.
If you put Huey down on a red table, he’ll turn red. If you put him up on a blue wall, he’ll turn blue: and he’ll usually match the shade of the color pretty closely. If you find a color you particularly like and would prefer he glow that color only, just set him on the surface until he changes, then squeeze him and put him down somewhere else to make him stay on that color.
Huey is made of soft vinyl and rests on any surface. You’ll need 3 AAA batteries or his included AC adapter to keep him powered on, and he comes with an experimentation sheet with a few colors on it so you can see how well he matches. If you want one, you can order him from ThinkGeek for $29.99 retail price.

Paper Jamz Maker Sued by Gibson

paper-jamz-guitar.jpg

Gibson Guitars last week hit Paper Jamz manufacturer WowWee with a lawsuit. According to the suit, the company copied Gibson guitar designs in the creation of its Paper Jamz guitar line.

Gibson cites a quote from the WowWee site in the suit,

The designs of each Paper Jamz guitar are similar to a classic that is highly sought after. For example, the Rock Style 6 guitar in Series 1 of Paper Jamz is made to resemble a Gibson SG while the Rock Style 1 is made to look like the famous Gibson Les Paul. You can choose from your favorite styles of guitar, with the styles ranging from the classic Fender Stratocaster the “Gibson Flying V” design.

The suit claims that the sale of such a product create confusion amongst consumers, given the fact that Gibson has licensed its designs for the Rock Band game line, which targets a similar demographic.

The guitar market also named a number of high profile retailers in the suit, including Amazon, K-Mart, and Target.
