Confess Your Love with AXE via Twitter

Men’s cosmetic brand AXE have launched a new twitter and Mixi (popular Japanese social networking site) based marketing campaign. Launched on May 9th, apparently “Confession Day”, men can enter the “AXE Tower” and confess their secrets of affection.

Axe_Body_Spray-1

Users choose a particular follower and write a heart felt confession or admission of love. The subject of the confession then receives a tweet with a URL to click on. Once on the page an animated figure with the users avatar then grabs a can of AXE, sprays himself for confidence (and presumably to make himself irresistible!) and runs the gauntlet to AXE Tower, cheered on by avatars of other followers (we were amused to see the ever-present Serkan Toto pop up). The animated avatar then climbs up AXE Tower amid scenes of blossoming love, to the top where in true Japanese style shouts out the message to the object of his desires.

Unfortunately there is no voice which actually shouts the words out, the text appears above the character, but it is fun nonetheless. Other followers can also join in by tweeting messages of encouragement or in some cases possibly messages of consolation.

Axe-campaign-2

Attempting to extend the reach of a brand through social marketing campaigns are growing in popularity, and with Twitter becoming very widely used in Japan, done correctly this kind of campaign can be very affective. The problem with this particular campaign though, is that no one knew that May 9th was “Confession Day”. This means that it didn’t really capitalise on any existing event like it was designed to do, and so didn’t pick up as much chatter. If released around valentines day, for example, it could have been a lot more effective, although with the approach of sweaty summers AXE are obviously stepping up their marketing now. They were clever however, in sending out the automatic tweet containing the URL with the period infront of the @ symbol. This means that rather than being able to be read only by the those who follow both parties, it could be read by all of the followers.

Twitter Scales Mount Everest. Is Nowhere Sacred? [Mount Everest]

Climbing Mount Everest is one of the most dangerous, physically challenging things a human being can do. You’d think that if there were one place on Earth that could convince people to leave their phones at home, that would be it. You’d be wrong. More »

Massachusetts court opens up to social media and live video, Ice-T expected to cameo

This story ripped from today’s headlines: the Quincy District Court, just south of Boston, Massachusetts, will now stream live video online. Dubbed OpenCourt, the experiment will also offer WiFi and encourage liveblogging and social media reporting — all in an attempt to help the judiciary understand and accommodate new digital reporting tools. Funded with a $250,000 grant from the Knight News Challenge, it proposes a more transparent philosophy for the legal system, which has often banned cameras and restricted access. But the court won’t become an open free-for-all. There will be no video for restraining order cases and those involving minors, among others, and judges can disable the video feed at any time. Said executive producer John Davidow,”The idea is to bring the courts and what goes on in the courts closer to the people so they understand how the law and the justice system work in this country.” With such high-minded goals, expect viewing that’s closer to C-SPAN than Law & Order.

Microsoft’s home of the future lulls teens to sleep with tweets (video)

Microsoft Home

Microsoft Home is a sort of “world of tomorrow” for the computer nerd set where Surface takes the place of video phones and dinner pills. The only difference is that, unlike those World’s Fair staples, Redmond’s vision of the not-so-distant future isn’t open to the public. This is a private testing ground where researchers can try out concepts, like a watch that records health data and syncs it with your home network or a media center that can analyze video and identify products and locations featured on screen. You might not be able to swing by the campus and visit, but you can catch a glimpse of suburban life in 2025 — populated by touchscreen wireless charging trays and interactive walls — in the video after the break. We’ll take it all, except the wallpaper — we don’t need #winning tweets floating overhead while we try to get some shut-eye.

[Thanks, Vygantas]

Obama’s bin Laden Speech Triggers 4,000 Tweets Per Second

osama.jpg

Even though it happened at around 11:30 on a Sunday night, Barack Obama’s speech on the death of Osama bin Laden has become one of the most active Tweeting sprees of all time.

“Twitter reached more than 4000 Tweets per second tonight at the beginning and end of President Obama’s speech,” Twitter wrote in an official company Tweet.

In a matter of hours, a search for “Osama” on YouTube brought up more than 2,000 new videos. Flash mobs also appeared at major landmarks throughout the country, including the White House, Ground Zero, and Times Square (where Gearlog captured the photo above).

Tweet_Fit tweets while you sweat to the oldies (video)

The Shake Weight it is not, but as 21st century workout solutions go, Tweet_Fit certainly has the potential to get people talking — or, at the very least, tweeting. Developed by a UK design student, the connected gym accessory attaches to the end of a standard dumbbell and sends updates to your Twitter account when you start and stop your workout. Take it offline and it guides you through the perfect curl. Tweet_Fit’s designer points out that it offers a novel way for trainers to keep track of their clients, and can be used to spur healthy competition between friends. Given, it won’t make bragging about how much you can bench any easier, but, then, tweeting an invitation to the gun show is so impersonal. Tweet_Fit is still a prototype, but you can check out a video of the Twitter-enabled dumbbell in action after the break.

[Thanks, Fraser]

Square gets financial backing from Visa, asks to see some ID

Everything’s coming up Jack Dorsey these days. Last week Apple started stocking Square’s iPhone credit card readers in its 235 US retail locations, and now, according to Reuters, Visa has put its plastic where its mouth is. The credit card giant has invested in the personal payments startup, scoring itself a spot on Square’s advisory board in the process. No word on how much Visa is actually dropping on the company, but one thing stands to reason: it probably didn’t make the deposit via Verifone. If you would like to invest in a Square reader, it’ll cost you a lot less — the company is still offering smartphone plug-ins for free on its site.

Meet Power Matt, Powermat’s new pun-based superhero ready to answer your tech questions (updated)

The biggest problem with modern society? A lack of good super villains. Seriously, today’s superheroes are getting flabby from sitting around, twiddling their powerful thumbs. Look at poor Power Matt here — dude’s clearly been working out and doing his shopping at the Justice League department store. So what is he doing with his time? Foiling bank heists or intercepting speeding missiles? Nope. He’s Powermat‘s new mascot, and he’s fielding questions about the inductive charging pad on the company’s Twitter account. Can someone please help the poor redheaded hero out and kidnap a world leader or something? Or at least steal their microUSB cable?

Update: Ah, so according to reader Virginia Comicon, turns out this image is, ahem, inspired by the cover of Superman issue 233. Check out the comparison after the break.

Why Twitter Might Be Ruining Your Love Life [Twitter]

A new series of studies out of OKCupid’s data-crunching love labs reveal daily Twitter users have shorter relationships than those who don’t—five to ten percent shorter. This makes sense. Twitter might turn us into more annoying, vain mates. More »
