Zune HD Twitter app now live UPDATE: it censors tweets!

It was a slow rollout today, but the promised Zune HD Twitter app is now live in Marketplace. We’ve been playing with it a little since we got it, and while it’s definitely one of the more attractive mobile Twitter clients we’ve come across, it’s also distressingly laggy: it’s stalled out several times just scrolling a list of tweets, button presses go ignored, and refreshing data seems to cause all sorts of consternation — our Zune’s dropped its WiFi connection several times now. Not sure what’s going on with that, but we’ve definitely seen some far more polished apps running on the Zune, so we’re hoping these glitches get cleaned up soon.

Update: Turns out there’s a bigger problem here than just poor performance — as reader Scott Zero points out, it censors naughty words out of tweets in your timeline. (Seriously — here’s his original tweet that we’ve highlighted above.) Sure, it’s a free app, but this kind of active content censorship just rubs us the wrong way — even worse than Apple’s various Twitter-related App Store shenanigans. Bleh.

Twitter for Zune coming tomorrow, @Facebook where are you?

Poetically enough announced via a tweet, the Zune team has given word that the long-awaited Twitter app is coming to Microsoft’s little media player that could. Coupled with November’s release of 3D games, by our count that leaves only Facebook left as the promised Zune app officially registering M.I.A. More details for tomorrow’s release in the morning, and with so many Twitter apps available on other platforms as case studies, we’ll be expecting some good things here, mkay Redmond?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Nokia Messaging for social networks hits beta, brings Twitter, and leaves out the N900

See, this is what we were saying. It’s not that we’re not excited about Maemo, or that we hate S60, or even that we dislike it when a company like Nokia builds a free messaging app that integrates social networks like Facebook (and now Twitter) into the handset experience. It’s just that Nokia has just built an app that only works on the N97, N97 Mini and the 5800, leaving the company’s quasi-flagship handset the N900 out in the cold. The new app can upload pictures and videos, integrates with email and the dialer, and pushes Facebook and Twitter updates live to the homescreen. It also serves as a all-too-timely example of how hard it is to support two operating systems at once. Alright, we’re done preaching, time to fire up the N97 and tell some people about our day. A video demo is after the break.

Marumaru Love – tell the world who you love on Twitter

Major Japanese companies are continuing to use Twitter as a promotional social tool.

Rohto Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. previously launched its “hada rabu” (ハダラブ, skin love) campaign with a large-scale Web CM (below) involving footage of fifty people showing off their love for their skin.

And now they have a sister site called “Marumaru Rabu” (まるまるラブ, constant love) which displays Twitter posts in animated galleries (below). Users comment by clicking 投稿 (”post”) at the top and log onto their Twitter account through the application. Depending on the monthly theme (December’s is of course Christmas) and the category you chose (family, work etc), you can Tweet what you are doing and how you are showing your love.

Google employees given HTC-made Google Phones, January launch imminent?

TechCrunch was certain that rumors of a pending honest-to-goodness Google Phone were the real deal, and now according to the site, Google employees are already tweeting with the devices in hand. If you believe what you see on Twitter, Google drones were given the HTC-designed handsets at an all-hands staff event, and the phone is quite a looker. One tweet reads “ZOMG we had fireworks and we all got the new Google phone. It’s beautiful.” while another says the phone is “Like an iPhone on beautifying steroids.” One other, non-Google user on Twitter who’s seen the device says that the device is a bit thinner than the iPhone, has a trackball (a la Hero), and has no physical keyboard… which sounds like the Bravo / Passion we’ve seen a lot of lately (and we hear is coming to the US soon). Apparently the device is running Android 2.1, is unlocked and AT&T-ready (no word on 3G status, but this could line up with our speculation about this being the carrier’s first Android phone), and will be due sometime in January. We’re guessing if that last bit is true, it will coincide with a CES announcement, but anything could happen at this point. If the device is out in the wild in such a big way, an end of the year press release wouldn’t shock us either; of course, it’s entirely possible that this is going to end up becoming the Android Dev Phone 1’s true successor or an elaborate prank on Google’s part in response to the rumors that have been building steam over the past couple weeks (they’re crafty and they have a sense of humor — it could happen). Anyhow, check out one of the tweet-tears after the break, and stay tuned for more info!

Update: Google all but confirms that devices are floating around on campus in a post on its blog:

We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it.

Not only that, but TechCrunch has more details on the device, claiming it will be a Google controlled, HTC-built model actually dubbed the “Google Phone,” and will feature a “super high resolution OLED display,” a Snapdragon CPU, a mic on the back of the phone that helps to eliminate background noise, is “really, really fast,” and most importantly, will be sold unlocked. Essentially, TC claims that the phone will function on any GSM network you throw at it — we assume that means an extremely rare pairing of both T-Mobile and AT&T 3G bands in the radio. Of course right now this is all speculation and hearsay — until we get some solid facts (and maybe a device or two on camera), don’t pull out the credit card just yet.

Update 2: Jon Gruber over at Daring Fireball says that the Google Phone is identifying itself as “Nexus One” (a Blade Runner reference) in its user agent string, though apparently Sony is calling its Android UI “Nexus” as well. Furthermore, a tweet from the man claims that he’s heard the phone sports 3G for T-Mobile only, thus seriously dashing hopes that this would play nice all over the US of A. Again, grain of salt everyone.

Samsung teases Bada at event, questions still outnumber answers

We’ve just come back from the Samsung Bada mobile platform launch event in London, and frankly the presentation was no more than an app developer and investor magnet — no hands-on opportunity and no direct answers regarding the hardware. The only mention of a Bada phone is that something’s coming out in the first half of 2010. That said, today Samsung did bring in representatives of five strong Bada app partners: Twitter, Capcom, EA, Gameloft and Blockbuster. Needless to say mobile gaming is high up on Bada’s agenda, but the brief presence of Twitter’s Head of Mobile, Kevin Thau, solidified Samsung’s dedication for integrating SNS (social networking services) sites on mobile handsets. Yes, just like many fish in the sea. Read on to see how Bada aims to be “an ocean of endless enjoyment.”

Twoddler lets your toddler twitter and summon the Fail Whale #cute

So you think your baby’s all Twitter-ready with that Kickbee while chilling in the womb? Nah, only practice makes perfect, so the folks at Belgium’s Hasselt University came up with the Twoddler: a hacked Fisher-Price activity board with buttons linked to predefined Twitter messages. Obsessive parents can put photos of themselves on the buttons, so that whenever those buttons are hit the Twoddler tweets something like “@mommy I miss you.” We like this idea, but then again you’ll never know if it’s just someone else’s kids bashing the buttons — you’ll still feel good anyway. Watch some Twoddler action after the break.

Twoddler Toy Lets Toddlers Tweet

twoddler1

As if Twitter weren’t already full of utterly bland, mindless codswallop, researchers from Hasselt University in Belgium are about to add the random, idiotic bleatings of a baby to the stream of nonsense. Worse, the baby won’t even know it is broadcasting its brainless, repetitive activities to the world.

Twoddler is a modified Fisher Price activity center, the kind that toddlers have tweaked and poked for what seems like generations. The difference is that this one has its activities monitored by a computer and the activities are translated into Tweets. The example uses a baby called Yorin, and if he spends, say, a few minutes playing with a picture of his mother, this Tweet will be forced on the world: “@mommy_yorin Yorin misses mommy and looks forward playing with her this evening”. Further, if he annoyingly bangs on the bell, over and over, for far too long, the computer will translate this to say “Yorin is showing off his music skills with a new tune”.

The Twoddler uses sensors hooked up to an Arduino circuit and sends the information via the wireless ZigBee protocol to a nearby computer. This is where the signals are converted into human-readable (or at least parent-readable) “words” and sent off to the web using the Twitter API.

We imagine that these incessant, repetitive Tweets will swiftly become as annoying as the behavior which triggers them, negating the whole point of sending Yorin off to the day-care center. There is one advantage to Twoddler over having an actual toddler in the room with you. It may be a bit of a moral conundrum, but at least mom always has the option to un-follow her offspring.

Augmented reality Twitter 360 app geolocates your friends by their tweets

We’re going to start off by stating unequivocally that we think this is a bad, bad idea. The Twitter 360 app, just launched by Presselite, is an augmented reality app for your iPhone 3GS which enables you to track your friends by the geolocation of their tweets. The app makes use of the iPhone 3GS’s compass to locate the tweeter, then reports back on their location. Now — if, like us, you want to be able to tweet about the rocking party you’re at on a Friday night when you’re actually sitting on the couch watching Mama’s Family — don’t worry: you can opt out of the geolocation feature. The Twitter 360 app, sure to be a resounding success with creeps the world over, is available now in the iTunes store for $2.99. Check out a video demonstration of it after the break.

Square iPhone payment system gets itself a website, showcased in public

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and the quiet startup formerly known as Squirrel are finally opening up a bit. The company now called Square, as we noted back in October, has launched a website for its iPhone payment dongle, although it’s still in somewhat private beta testing. TechCrunch managed to catch up with Dorsey, who gave a brief overview of the product and then showed it off by charging $4 for a cup of coffee — so it goes in San Francisco. See Square in action after the break.
