Video: D-Touch drum machine keeps heads, hands bobbing

Oh sure, we’ve seen countless drum machine hacks over the years, but there’s just something special about one that’s so simple, yet so fulfilling. D-Touch is hailed as a visual markers recognition system “that enables the development of low-cost tangible user interfaces and mixed reality applications,” and here, we’re seeing it used to create movable sounds. Users simply print out the cubes, fold ’em up, add lentils and arrange them on the highly sophisticated A4 sheet of paper. We get the feeling this one won’t cost you much to replicate, so why not hit the read link for more instructions after digging into the vid just beyond the break?

Microsoft’s “Pink” smartphone to be Microsoft-branded?

Ready for even more rumors about Windows Mobile 7 and Microsoft’s mysterious “Pink” smartphone project? Good, cause we’ve got a few — and the first is potentially huge. ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley says her best understanding of “Pink” is now that it’s a Microsoft-branded phone running a custom UI on top of Windows Mobile 7, developed by what’s left of the Danger team and targeted at the Sidekick market. Yep, Microsoft-branded — as in, the exact thing Microsoft has been denying for ages now. What’s more, Redmond wouldn’t be letting third parties use this new UI — Pink would be manufactured only by Sharp or Motorola, who’ve made Sidekicks in the past. It all makes sense, even if it does feel a bit like MS is knifing its partners in the back — companies like HTC and Samsung have been equally aggressive in layering their own UIs like TouchFLO 3D and TouchWiz on top of WinMo, but it’s another thing entirely to compete against Microsoft itself, especially now that AdWeek says Microsoft’s selected an agency to develop a Pink ad campaign. Yeah, things are starting to get a little wild — we haven’t even mentioned the open questions of whether the Zune HD is running Tegra because it’s based on Windows Mobile 7 Chassis 1, or whether Pink will launch on Verizon, or whether Zune will appear on other phones, or… you get the idea. Hey Microsoft — you want to clear any of this up by shipping some products?

HTC Hero hands-on: Flash, keyboard and ruminations (updated!)

We’re going to need some real time with the device to make a final opinion, but we’re cautiously optimistic that HTC has a winner with its new Hero. Here’s what we’ve got from our first looks at the phone in London and NY:

  • The beveled edges along the back makes the handset sit comfortably in the hand, and while the teflon coat doesn’t necessarily feel revolutionary, it’s going to make a world of difference after a couple of months riding in our grubby pockets. It’s certainly solid, but much more so than other “brick” phones.
  • The Sense UI (or as HTC terms it, “user experience”) riding a capacitive touchscreen offers a people-centric approach to managing your information that is absolutely dreamy at first blush — though it shares a lot of TouchFLO heritage. In fact, HTC promises to have a very similar Sense-branded experience for Windows Mobile.
  • The on-screen keyboard also seems quite useable with a nice simulated haptic forced-feedback bounce when you strike each key in either landscape or portrait mode (which can naturally be deactivated). HTC has built its own touch keyboard from the ground up, and in our brief couple of tests we’d say it’s probably the best touchscreen typing experience we’ve ever felt. It never lags behind, and has great colorful visual cues for its auto-corrected words — green means it’s suggesting a correctly spelled word, red means we’ve gone off the beaten path, and the T9-style multiple suggestions are heavenly.
  • This intuitive one-hander isn’t shy with the specs either as we’ve already seen in the official press release. Our only concern is possible sluggishness from the Qualcomm processor that cause the graphic transitions to stutter a bit and results in screen rotations that feel dangerously uncomfortable.
  • We were told that the device we saw was running pre-production firmware so there’s still time to tweak — though not much with a July European launch.
  • The Hero is not a “Google Experience” device. As such, you won’t find the Google logo anywhere (no big deal) but you also won’t be downloading any firmware updates over the air — sideloading only kids. Not a deal breaker but an annoying and seemingly arbitrary limitation nonetheless. There’s still a small lack of clarity of how updates will work with HTC’s “mods” living on top of basic Android — even if they’re able to port in new Android versions seamlessly, we imagine there will be some breakage.
  • For a device without a physical keyboard, the Hero seems a little thick up against its HTC Magic, Nokia N97, and iPhone 3G counterparts, but not overly so.
  • HTC has confirmed that whichever (unspecified) carrier gets the phone in the US will have a modified version, both in software (carrier-specific services) and in hardware chassis tweaks. Just don’t take our teflon away, ok HTC?
  • Battery is the same larger slab that’s in the myTouch, and HTC also claims to have done some vague, unspecified things OS-side to improve battery life as well. “Heavy users will be able to get through a day.”
  • The camera is responsive and seems to do a fine job at autofocus, but wasn’t astonishingly great at first glance.
  • The phone will be available for free on T-Mobile UK — if only we could be so subsidy lucky in the US.

There are four videos for you after the break. The first shows Flash running at full screen on the HTC Hero courtesy of YouTube. The second, however, shows it failing when running a trailer from Yahoo Movies, just like Adobe did — in fact, it crashed all four times that we tried it on what we were told was a Hero running the final build of the OS. Third one is a quickie showing the on-screen keyboard rotating from portrait to landscape and back. Lastly, we demonstrate the hardware a little bit and show off our lightning speed at typing. Meizu M8 gets new UI, possibly Android?

This one’s for all of you Meizu fanboys out there: To tide you over while you wait for the M8 3G launch in March 2010 (with a possible M8 3G S planned for Smarch 2043 or thereabouts) the company’s announced that the handset will be getting a UI refresh with its firmware 1.0 release come August. Keep in mind that the above image only shows the flowchart that the kids at the eico design lab are using to concoct all their fantastic new transitions and animations, and not the interface itself. And if that isn’t enough to keep you entertained this fine morning, it looks like Meizu has put together a team “with the sole purpose of investigating the Android platform.” Whether or not this “investigation” will amount to anything remains to be seen, and it doesn’t look like the company has any serious intentions for this device beyond the domestic Chinese market, but who knows? Maybe there is a Meizu handset with the open source OS in your (distant) future. Stranger things have happened.

Video: iriver B30 taken for a spin around the box

Time for a break from all the MID, smartbook, and netbook action from the Computex show for a glimpse at the latest from Korea’s iriver. The B30, like most iriver devices, starts with elegant hardware. iriver then slips in a UI and physical controls that may or may not be new to its user base. While we appreciate iriver’s dedication to innovation, a bit of consistency would be appreciated, especially since none of the UIs have quite reached perfection. So take a look at the B30 after the break — you feeling those white boxy outlines and rotation delays as the display moves between portrait and landscape? Korea-only huh? Fine by us.

Video: Bumptop gives Windows 7 touchscreen PCs purpose

Bumptop has been around as a video concept for a few years. Now this amazing desktop organizer with a physics engine underpinning the UI is available for download (PC only). The software allows you to bump and toss weighted objects across the desktop and organize them into folders or piles the way you would on your real-world desk. It also includes the ability to pan and zoom on images with all the gesture support you’d expect. While a touchscreen (multi-touch supported when Windows 7 ships) display provides a more natural interface, Bumptop also works with a mouse. Check the video after the break — then hit up the download link below which we suspect you’ll be frantically searching for after the video ends. Granted, we we don’t want to spend our days with arms outstretched at “work” in front of a touchsceen PC anymore than you, but software like this could be useful on our lesser used, kitchen PCs.

Update: Katherine Boehret and Walt Mossberg have posted their review after playing with the wares for a few days. It’s definitely “worth a try” but requires a shift from an application- to a desktop-driven approach to daily computing. Something they don’t sound eager to do regardless of how “fun” Bumptop is.

Click: A Visual Tour of Camera Interfaces

Digital cameras do more stuff than ever—detect smiles, track specific people, shoot HD video—but while some are adding dials and buttons to manage feature bloat, others are shedding buttons like dead, obsolete skin.

Here’s a sampling of user interfaces across compact cameras from every major digital camera maker: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Casio, Olympus and Fujifilm. User interfaces matter in these cameras more than ever because they’re increasingly the major way you drill down to change settings or switch modes—rather than manually cranking a dial, like on a pro DSLR. Some are pretty good (Canon, Samsung) while some are pretty bad (Casio).

The better ones tend to use a list or grid style, where everything is clearly laid out and easy to access, and more UIs seem to be trending toward the branching list model—when you highlight something, you can see its parameters underneath it. Fonts are rough on some but clearly polished on others. This is a make-or-break issue, since quick visibility is key when you shift from a button UI, or a visual one that only relies on icons.

Canon actually now has two sets of user interfaces: The old one you’re used to if you’ve used Canon lately, and a totally new one that they’re rolling out on two of their new cameras. It’s slicker, with pop out animations and a more modern font, but I think a bit more confusing since it doesn’t show you everything at once. It uses a list style for displaying settings. Once you get the hang of it, though, it’s a solid UI.

Nikon has a few different UIs, but the style isn’t even consistent within one camera. Oddly, its touchscreen camera shares its ugly UI with some of their other cameras, with few, if any tweaks to make it touch-friendly. It’s only Nikon’s second-gen touch camera, but its meh UI stands in contrast to the pretty capable one on their DSLRs.

Sony, too, uses the same UI on their touchscreens as they do on their non-touchscreen cameras. It works about as well in touch as it does on non-touch cameras—which is better than Nikon’s I feel, since it uses a cross bar type of GUI that Sony’s good at. Maybe slightly bigger buttons would help. Overall, Sony’s is one of the nicer camera UIs—not terribly confusing.

Too much stuff happens on the back of their cameras, but Panasonic’s touch UI seems ‘specially designed for fingers, with big, finger-friendly options. (I didn’t notice it on their other cams, so I think it was just for the touch FX580, but I could be wrong.) Their standard non-touch UI isn’t too bad—I’d put it in the middle of the pack.


Olympus goes with a unique icon style, but it’s pretty confusing in terms of trying to get to stuff quickly or navigate backwards and forwards, since you don’t know what becomes before or after something in the hierarchy, conceptually speaking. That said, it looks better than the messy menu on the back of their latest DSLR.

Casio has the worst UI out of any camera I checked out. It’s cluttered, tiny, ugly and every other sin in the book.

Basic, boring, not particularly helpful.


I mentioned how much I liked Samsung’s list UI on the TL320 earlier. It’s straightforward, easy to navigate and looks pretty good. When you highlight something, its sub-settings pop up as a list on the right, so you know what you’ll be adjusting when you drill down a level. Their other UI isn’t quite as good, but it’s also fairly straightforward, if slightly more cluttered.

Here are all the touch UIs together. You’d think Panasonic’s was the best, except it’s wildly inconsistent about when you can touch a menu item and when you can’t. So Sony wins by a nose. Weird, Sony winning a UI battle, I know. Nikon’s touch interface is just too grotesque to be considered.

Camera UIs can definitely get better, and really need to, because it’s clear that the feature-bloat train isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. But it’s a tricky balance: How do you simplify a user interface for quick, easy access to functions while containing the smorgasbord of new features crammed into every generation of cameras? Can you even make a truly usable touch camera? Uneasy questions without easy answers.

PMA is an annual show where we get to see tomorrow’s digital cameras—the ones that’ll be populating pockets and purses for the rest of the year.

Video: 3D Eye Tracking from TAT, the guys behind the T-Mobile G1 UI

Ever notice the word “Malmo” emblazoned across the face of Android’s analog clock widget? That’s a subtle nod to the city where the Swedish design team called TAT (The Astonishing Tribe) is headquartered — a group of nerds responsible for finessing the look and feel of the T-Mobile G1’s user interface including such innovations as the window shade menu and 9-point visual key-lock. In fact, TAT’s software prowess can be seen on the Samsung Instinct, S60 handsets from Nokia, and a variety of devices from Motorola and Sony Ericsson. So when TAT releases a new “3Deyetracking UI” concept that lets you see behind on-screen objects, well, you can bet that the entire cellphone industry is paying attention. LG Arena KM900 hangs onto limelight, reveals multitouch capabilities

At this rate, LG isn’t gonna have any secrets left about the Arena KM900 when it takes the stage for its Mobile World Congress press conference on Monday. The company’s released a few more snippets via its Korean site, chief among them being multitouch capabilities for image and web page zooming. Other details include a dedicated multimedia chip and designations for each of the four sides of the interface’s 3D cube: phone, widgets, shortcuts, and multimedia. One of our favorite lines, which is almost certainly made funnier by the machine translation, is that this UI is the culmination of 100 years of interface research. We’ll have more on the KM900 — assuming they don’t reveal everything before then — next week in Barcelona.
