AMD’s Congo platform getting really official next month?

AMD’s never been much for keeping to the roadmap, and it looks like the curious launch of its Congo platform is evidence of that very fact. If you’ll recall, we actually saw a Congo-based netbook launch way back in June, and it was expected that a flood of other ultrathin machines would follow shortly thereafter. According to DigiTimes, the demand in the market just wasn’t there (thanks, recession!), so everything was pushed back until November. Lo and behold, our Gregorian calendar has that very month on deck for next, and according to mythical sources at laptop makers, the platform should make its super-duper official debut within a matter of weeks. The dual-core Turion Neo X2 L625, Athlon Neo X2 L335/L325 and / or single-core Athlon Neo MV-40 should be front and center, and AMD is apt to announce progress on its Nile and Brazos platforms — both of which should help carry the chip maker through the next two years. Look out Atom, you’ve got some delayed competition coming your way.

Update: Seems as if this may all just be a “second wave” of sorts when many PC makers choose to launch machines based on this platform alongside Windows 7’s debut. AMD informed us that the November delay notion was also false, and we get the feeling that Congo’s just been waiting for Win7 to really get itself out there.

Dell’s $2,000 Adamo XPS launching October 22 with heat-sensing open latch

Dell has been teasing its ultrathin Adamo XPS for weeks now, but all that goofing off will come to a solemn end next Thursday. On the same day that we sit down with Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer (and a little OS by the name of Windows 7 hits store shelves), Dell will also fully reveal the planet’s slimmest laptop. The 0.39-inch Adamo XPS will cost $2,000, and while the nitty-gritty details are still under wraps, a new Business Week article notes that it’ll boast a “heat-sensing strip on the lip that, when swiped with a finger, glows white and automatically opens the aluminum lid.” The glamorous machine is part of a larger effort within the Round Rock powerhouse to revitalize itself and get people talking once again, and while this particular slab will obviously not be a high volume product, it could very well get a few more eyes pointed in its direction. Call us crazy, but we’re guessing next week is going to be a wee bit zany.

Vaio X series thin-and-light reviewed: ‘It’s really thin! And light!’

In the mood for a thin-and-light, got $1,300 burning a hole in your pocket? Have we got a lappie for you! The kids at T3 have put the new Sony Vaio X through its ever-lovin’ paces recently and have been kind enough (and gracious enough) to give us the scoop. In short, there’s a lot to love about the thing: thinner than even the MacBook Air (yet packed with an ethernet connection, VGA, and two USB ports) and “super light,” this guy offers an “impressive” 11.1-inch display with “excellent color reproduction.” On the other hand, while the carbon fiber keeps weight down, it isn’t too terribly sturdy — the entire body “flexing alarmingly under light pressure.” And sure, you’re paying quite a premium for an Atom CPU, but hey — maybe you’re into that sort of a thing. If so, hit the read link for the rest of the story.

MSI’s 14-inch X-Slim X400 now shipping in the US of A

It’s a little tough to believe that it took MSI this many months to bring its X-Slim X400 from the trade show floor to the digital market place, but at long last, the outfit’s 14-inch slimster is finally on sale here in the States. For those badly in need of a refresher, $799.99 gets you a 1.3GHz SU2700 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, WXGA panel, GMA 4500MHD GPU, WiFi, 4-cell battery, HDMI / VGA ports, a pair of USB sockets, a multicard reader, external DVD burner and a three-year warranty. As expected, Vista comes loaded on, though we suspect an upgrade voucher to Windows 7 will be bundled in for good measure.

Transparent Sony VAIO X amazingly captured on camera

We’ve already gotten a couple of up close looks at Sony’s new thin-and-light VAIO X ourselves, but it seems that the company had a little something extra for its debut at a press event in China today: an amazing transparent edition of the laptop. Of course, the chances of it ever seeing a store shelf are even slimmer than its impossibly thin profile, but we’re guessing this is the best glimpse most folks will get of the laptop’s internals — as anyone shelling out $1,300+ for one of these likely won’t be able to bear prying it apart. Be sure to hit up the gallery below for a closer look courtesy of our pals at Engadget Chinese.

Sony VAIO X specs and pricing leak out — 2.0GHz Atom, $1,499?

We’re expecting the official launch of Sony’s hot little VAIO X ultraportable later today, but Boy Genius Report claims to have some leaked specs and pricing to think over while we wait — and if they’re accurate, you’ll be staring down the wrong end of a $1,499 price tag when all is said and done. Yeah, it’s not unexpected, but still, ouch. For your trouble, you’ll be getting what Sony’s calling the “world’s lightest notebook,” weighing in a just 1.5 pounds of carbon-fiber with an 11.6-inch LED display, SSD, multitouch trackpad, and a 3.5-hour standard battery life that can be pushed to 14 hours using a “super-extended” battery. Okay, not bad, but what’s running this show? Well, we’ve got some potentially bad news to report — we’ve been told that the VAIO X will have a 2.0GHz Atom Z550 inside, just like the prototypes. Yep, that’s another $1,499 Sony Atom laptop — we’ll wait for the official announcement to confirm before we start wringing our hands, but we’re open to your lamentations in comments.

Screen Grabs: Dell’s Latitude Z keeps ‘Parks & Recreation’ intern busy

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Man, Dell‘s making a serious push to get its wares out to the masses this fall. Just days after we spotted an Adamo chillin’ in House M.D., a shiny new Latitude Z has now been spotted in NBC’s own Parks & Recreation. Granted, we can’t actually see that any work is being done (the default blue wallpaper isn’t exactly telling), but when you’ve got Amy Meredith Poehler running the grandiose city town of Pawnee, Indiana, you can only expect so much. But hey, look on the bright side — we’re pretty sure the proceeds from eBaying that Latitude Z would more than cover the flora she purchased while under the influence, wouldn’t you agree?

[Thanks, Andrew]

Screen Grabs: Dell’s Adamo keeps patient company on House

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Heads-up, folks: fall TV is in full swing, and the newest season of House M.D. has already delivered on more than one front. Aside from convincing you that a hospital really is no place to spend the majority of your day, Hugh Laurie’s money maker is also subtly whispering to you that a Dell Adamo would suit you just fine. The super sleek ultraportable managed to show its face on this week’s episode, and for any of you out there who doubt a glossy screen’s ability to double as a mirror, we’d say this primetime showing proves otherwise. Are matte panels not covered under Medicare, or what?

[Thanks, Steven]

Toshiba launches new Satellite netbooks in the US and UK

We know you love nothing more than a Toshiba Satellite laptop announcement, so listen up: the company has just announced two new CULV ultraportables of the UK and stateside market: The Satellite T135 (or the T130 as it’s known overseas) is a 13.3-inch beauty with options including either an Intel Pentium, Celeron single core or Celeron dual-core CPU, up to 3GB of DDR3 RAM, and 250GB harddrive. The Satellite T115 (or T110 in the UK) sports an 11.6-inch display, either an Intel Pentium or Celeron single core CPU, and up to 4GB of RAM and 500GB harddrive. What’s more, the kids over at Laptop Mag have given the T135 the old once-over and found it to be a pretty good deal: “for slightly less than the competition,” they said of the $709 review unit, you’re getting “good performance and a stylish design.” Perhaps the single touchpad button and the quiet speakers will be a turn-off to some, but it takes all kinds, right? Look for the T135 and T115 on October 22nd, for $599 and $449 respectively — their UK counterparts should hit the streets on the same date, priced from £429.
