BBC iPlayer going international next year, will be either fee- or ad-supported

The BBC’s iPlayer video-on-demand service has been an unqualified success since its rollout back in 2007 and now it’s taking the next logical step in expanding its reach: it’s going global. Such is the word from John Smith, the generically named head of BBC Worldwide, who sees the international market for British shows as “under-exploited” and wants to see the iPlayer opened up beyond the Queen’s home isles. Of course, since continental Europeans and North Americans aren’t subject to the same backbreaking TV license fee, there’ll be a new commercial element to the service, though the Beeb’s bigwigs have yet to figure out if that means users will have to pay a levy or put up with some ads. Either way, we’ve got quite a few eager iPlayer viewers on our own staff, so we imagine whenever and however the switch does get flipped, it’ll be welcomed by all.

Dell Venue Pro gets Expansys listing: £499.99 for November 8th

Don’t take this as the gospel, but online retailer Expansys has gone ahead and listed Dell’s Venue Pro — affectionately known as “the Windows Phone 7 device with a portrait QWERTY slider” — with pricing and availability date in tow. Which, if you’re wondering, is £499.99 (or about $783 in US dollars, when crudely converted) and Monday, November 8th, respectively. That’s just over two weeks away, which means if it is true, you won’t have long to wait… and if it’s not true, you’ll know soon enough, anyway.

Samsung Galaxy Tab up for pre-order at Carphone Warehouse for £530

We continue that elusive hunt for an official Galaxy Tab price with the most reliable (though still not authoritative) number yet: £530 ($850) from the Carphone Warehouse. Already announced as one of the first retailers to offer the device in the UK on that November 1 launch date, the Warehouse outfit has now set its price for the 16GB Tab at exactly the level of the 3G-equipped iPad. Coincidence? We think not. This is highly likely to be Samsung’s final pre-subsidy pricing, leaving it up to network operators to tempt us with some aggressive discounts. We can only hope.

PS3 and Lovefilm make it official, streaming movies to consoles in the UK this November (updated)

Considering our leak a couple of days back came directly from Sony itself, this is hardly a suprise, but Eurogamer has done the diligent thing and managed to confirm with the dudes in suits that British film streaming service Lovefilm will indeed be coming to the PlayStation 3. The everything console is adding the UK answer to Netflix to its stable of software enhancements, which will let people ~~buy pay-per-view movies~~ or, provided they’re on Lovefilm’s £5.99 subscription or above, let them stream away without a care in the world. Oh, and the video ad that got pulled? We’ve now got it for you after the break.

Update: Electric Pig have been told that the PPV option will be left off the table for console streamers.

Update 2: Lovefilm has gotten in touch with us directly to say the service is rolling out this November.

HTC 7 Pro arriving in UK and rest of Europe ‘early next year’

So what if Microsoft’s nicest WP7 slate phones all went to Europe and the rest of the un-American world? At least we’ll have the HTC 7 Pro, the true Windows Phone 7 workhorse, with its tilt-sliding QWERTY keyboard and compact 3.6-inch size. Well, as it turns out, that device will be available in Europe too! We’ve just confirmed with HTC that the 7 Pro is definitely headed to the UK and its Euro neighbors, with the current roadmap set for “early next year.” It’s still too soon to discuss potential carriers, but we’re sure our British buddies will be chuffed just to know the handset’s coming their way.

LG Optimus 7 made official ahead of Windows Phone 7 launch, quickly yanked

Microsoft’s been really keen to keep all the Windows Phone 7 fanfare to itself, but LG’s equally zealous official UK blog has just thwarted that effort by posting both details and a gallery of images of the company’s Optimus 7 (aka E900) handset online. To be fair to them, it’s nothing a ton of leaks haven’t already revealed: the Optimus 7 will be a 3.8-inch touchscreen device, sporting WVGA (800 x 480) resolution, 16GB of onboard storage, a 5 megapixel camera with a 720p video mode, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, a digital compass, and your usual proximity and ambient light sensors. Also present will be that DLNA streaming functionality we saw at IFA, officially titled Play-To, which will be exclusive to LG’s phones along with Voice-to-Text and Scansearch, the former being a message transcriber and the latter acting as an augmented reality real-time search service. Intriguing.

UK carrier’s roadmap points to October 21 release for Windows Phone 7, over 2,000 apps at launch

The whole world and his neighbor’s dog may already know when Windows Phone 7 will be announced, but when are the actual phones going to hit actual shelves? If you’re in the US, that time still looks to be a month away, but the UK release window has just been narrowed down from late October to a single, albeit still speculative, date: October 21. Our tipster forwards the above snapshot from a Three UK document showing a “Windows 7Phone” nestled in between the BlackBerry Torch and Samsung Europa. Its Super AMOLED display tells us we’re definitely looking at a Samsung handset, while the 4-inch diagonal suggests it’ll be the Cetus (SGH-i916/7). This sheet of revelation also finally gives us a hint as to the number of apps WP7 will start off with, enumerating them at “over 2,000 at launch.” We don’t know why Microsoft’s been so shy about that number — 2,000 good apps are more than enough.

Nokia N8 going on general sale October 22, available online October 15

Been waiting for the N8 but weren’t sure enough about buying it to get into the pre-order queue? Well, Nokia must have found your lack of faith disturbing as it’s now stiffing those who didn’t pre-order its all-new handset with another couple of weeks of waiting. Those without Nokia logos tattooed on their lower backs will finally be able to purchase the N8 on October 15 — but only via Nokia’s own web store — before a general release hits the UK and presumably most of the rest of Europe on October 22 (slightly later than the promised October 1 landing date). The distribution is indeed wide, however, with all the major UK carriers, plus Tesco Mobile and Virgin Mobile, joining the Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U in offering the phone that has “a black belt in entertainment.” Yeah, Nokia, we’re finding this wait really entertaining.

HTC Mozart slips out on official Orange UK website, shows us how to replace its SIM and battery

This is so bad, it’s hilarious. As if the HTC Mozart needed any further confirmation of its existence and imminent arrival to British shores, Orange’s official web portal has decided to instruct us on how to replace the internal bits of this unannounced Windows Phone 7 handset. That’s right, even though HTC and Microsoft are acting all cloak and dagger about it, the freaking phone’s name and likeness are hanging out on Orange’s official website. Have we said the word “official” enough times already? Skip past the break for a couple more image grabs which are sure to disappear just as soon as Orange finally figures out what day of the month this is.

Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4: camera showdown

What’s the first thing you should do when you get the N8? Considering it packs the biggest image sensor embedded in a phone yet, Carl Zeiss optics, and an eight-digit pixel count, it seemed obvious to us that the answer was to take it on a picture- and video-taking stroll around London. On our way out we saw our iPhone 4 looking all sad and lonely, so we went ahead and brought it along as well. Below you shall find one gallery of pure, unadulterated N8 sample shots, another interspersed with the iPhone’s results for comparison’s sake, and a final one with side-by-side 100 percent crops from each image taker. Once you’ve digested all of those, we suggest hopping past the break and tucking into some tasty video comparisons for dessert.

Naturally, all the images are entirely unretouched (but for our masterly watermarking) and the iPhone 4’s HDR hocus pocus has been left off. We’ve also provided a zip file containing all the full-res imagery shot with the N8 in a link below.

A quick note is also merited about the N8’s resolution. The sensor’s display ratio is 4:3, which means that full 12 megapixel shots are only available in those dimensions. The camera software, however, defaults to shooting 9 megapixel snaps at the increasingly popular 16:9 ratio — this is done simply by cropping away the “excess” bars at the top and bottom of the image, meaning that the 9 megapixel images are giving us identical performance as the 12 megapixel ones, they’re just chopped down (from 4000 x 3000 to 4000 x 2248) for the sake of convenience. Now, on with the show!
