Stock of Sony’s premier new compact system camera is still pretty scarce on the ground, but British photography retailer Jessops has managed to round up a batch and is ready to ship you one right this minute. Provided, that is, that you’re equipped with £589 ($867) and a lusting for the silver variety of the NEX-5. The swarthy variant and the kit that includes a 16mm pancake lens are not yet ready for their time in the spotlight, but you can pre-order them now as well. Or, should your needs not stretch to quite such stratospheric heights, peek out the NEX-3, which can already be had from US e-tailers at far saner price tags. Strap yourselves in, pilgrims. Nokia’s next great handset has resurfaced in London today, and this time we were even allowed to turn it on. There’s pretty much no way you could be unaware of the N8 by now — Nokia’s done the viral video thing, the teaser demo thing, the feature walkthrough thing, we’ve covered it to near-exhaustion. But we’ve never seen it, you know, doing stuff. You can now consider that omission corrected, as we’ve finally powered up the 3.5-inch OLED screen, entered the overhauled Symbian^3 wonderland, and come back to tell the tale. Motorola’s quirky square-shaped Android 2.1 creation has just become official, courtesy of the company’s YouTube channel.The Flipout brings a 2.8-inch, 320 x 240 screen (Kin killer!), a 3 megapixel camera with “one-touch” uploads to Facebook, MySpace and photo-hosting sites, and a refreshed implementation of Motoblur, which now includes resizable widgets, feed filters, and push corporate email. We hear that last feature is a real must-have with the target audience of this device.Video of the Flipout can be found just after the break, and Euro readers can expect it imminently, as the listed Q2 2010 launch date basically means it’ll be out by month’s end. Wonder how they’ll price a curious creature like this.

Update: Our pals at Recombu got a quick hands-on with the Flipout, and… it’s a square Android phone. Video after the break.

Update 2: We’ve come across a more comprehensive spec sheet on Moto’s dev site, which lists AT&T- and Rogers-compatible 3G bands, make of that what you will.

As official confirmations go, this is the weakest kind. A Nokia store employee has informed Pocket-lint that the N8 hero device we’ve all been waiting for will be launching in the Queen’s backyard on Wednesday, August 25. That’s only a day off from the August 24 tip that we had and definitely seems to narrow down the release window, but let’s retain our signature skepticism. Until one of Nokia’s higher-ups or their PR team busts out an official release date, we’re still dealing with speculative information. Then again, if you wanna book that week of August off from work, we’d totally understand.

Apple may be a despot of its own walled garden, but that doesn’t mean it’s not benevolent. The iPad’s international launch on May 28 has prompted the company to open Stores an hour early, at 8AM local time, in order to give its devotees a reprieve from hours of queuing outside. Then again, that little asterix up there points us to an ominous “while supplies last” note at the bottom, which together with current pre-orders being fulfilled at some unidentified point in June, might force the most impatient to just get to the Store even earlier. UK buyers will get an alternative option thanks to Dixons Group stocking Apple’s slate in Currys and PC World outlets, an arrangement that we keep hearing might be exclusive for the first sixty days after launch. Either way, you’ve been warned, don’t be tardy if you wanna be trendy.

P.S. The iBooks app has also made its debut outside of the US today, though at present it’s limited to just freebie titles, and the iBookstore is still described as “US only.”

Update: The latest we’re hearing is that at least some Apple Premium Resellers will also be getting stock of the iPad in the UK — worth checking out if other options sell out.
