Acer Iconia Tab A500 to get Android 3.1 on 5th of July, at least in Deutschland

The Iconia Tab A500, Acer’s “better choice” tablet, is set to join the ranks of Android 3.1 slates on the 5th of July, according to the company’s German Facebook page. That’s a little later than the June timeframe we’d initially been promised, but the precision of giving an actual date this time around inspires confidence that the OTA goodies will indeed be delivered. So far, we’ve only seen Acer announce this news on its German portal, so please keep your optimism in cautious gear if you reside outside the Bundesrepublik. The only certain Android update is the one that’s already on your device.

Motorola Xoom gets Android 3.1 update that activates microSD card support outside the US

You know that microSD card slot that’s been laying dormant in your Motorola Xoom? Provided you don’t reside in the US, that’ll be getting activated soon as part of the tablet’s Android 3.1 update, which is starting to roll out now and should have all of Europe covered within the next few weeks. Motorola explicitly identifies this as a firmware update for “non-US” Xooms, so Canadians would be well advised to check their software update utility, though the big question is why didn’t the American 3.1 update include microSD support as well? What tangled web of intrigue lies behind this selective activation?

Motorola Xoom appears on Verizon MAP, finally heading to LTE?

The Xoom may finally be getting LTE support, after a mysterious issue prompted Motorola to delay adding access to Verizon’s 4G network to the popular tablet. The Moto Xoom recently appeared on Verizon’s Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) system, which means the device will likely become available later this summer. Unfortunately, MAP doesn’t include any pricing information for the tablet, and there’s no official word regarding availability, but current 3G Xoom owners should still be able to upgrade free of charge with a one-week turnaround via FedEx. We’ll be curious to see how LTE affects battery life, considering some of VZW’s other high-speed devices haven’t fared so well, but we are willing to compromise ever so slightly in exchange for that lightening-fast 4G data.

Olivetti’s OliPad 110 tablet runs on Honeycomb, olive oil

Just a few months after unleashing what it called Italy’s first tablet, Olivetti is turning its attention to what might be Italy’s first tablet upgrade — the OliPad 110. Much like its predecessor, this 1.3-pound slate rocks an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and a 10-inch touchscreen, but runs on Honeycomb and boasts a higher-res, 1280 x 800 display. There’s also a two-megapixel camera strapped to the front, a five-megapixel lens ’round back and 16GB of onboard memory. Droid 2 Global gets Gingerbread, customizable dock and more in latest update from Verizon

Droid 2 Global users, your moment in the Gingerbread sun has arrived. Verizon’s put up a page with download instructions for a 103MB update, taking your QWERTY slider from version 2.4.330 to 4.5.600. Updating isn’t the most taxing of activities, you just look for a system update in the About Phone menu and then give your blessing for the download to commence. VZW will also be prompting tardy users to take their OTA medicine in due course. So what’s new apart from Android 2.3? Well, the big change is that the previously static phone, contacts and apps icons at the bottom of the UI have now been turned into a user-customizable dock, with three links of your choosing sidling up next to the App Launcher. There’s also a freshened up UI look, a Download Manager App, user-definable App Groups, encryption for data both on the device and its SD card, improvements in battery life while using WiFi and Bluetooth, and the obligatory stability fixes. If all that sounds irresistible and you have the requisite phone in hand, go get it!

HP upgrades 11 Pavilion and ProBook laptops to AMD Llano APUs

Llano laptops are like buses. You wait two years for just one to arrive and then eleven come out at once. Yep, AMD’s long-awaited hybrid CPU / GPU has finally gone official today and HP is wasting no time in introducing laptops harnessing its Accelerated Processing powers. On the consumer side, the Pavilion dv (dv4, dv6, dv7) and g (g4, g6, g7) series are both getting in on the action, with the dv models touting fancier additions like Beats Audio and CoolSense as justifications for their dearer pricing. For the more demure or business-oriented AMD fans, ProBook laptops of both b (6465b, 6465b) and s (4535s, 4435s, 4436s) varieties are also getting A-series processor options. Pricing starts out at $600 on the dv line and $450 for the g series, with both expected to ship in July, whereas the ProBook models will be a bit more punctual and arrive on June 27th, provided you have at least $519 to splash out. BlackBerry PlayBook gets updated with new power menu, better Facebook app, and more

The PlayBook isn’t even two months old yet and it’s already scored a second update to its QNX-based OS. First up from BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.5 is an upgraded Facebook app, which is now a preloaded part of the system software and can do some really neat things… like delete unwanted messages. Devs will be happy to hear that they can include in-app payments, while our European friends should be excited about the expanded language support. There are a few other welcome changes, including some enterprise-friendly tweaks to video chat, a new pop-up power menu (pictured above), and the ability to charge even when the device is turned off — a constraint we’re sure had at least a few owners pulling a Picard-like facepalm. No, it’s not an upgrade to Honeycomb, but the HTC Flyer is getting some tweaks nonetheless. Over the weekend, owners of the 7-inch tablet should have seen a prompt for an over-the-air update making the vague promise to “improve system performance.” We’re naturally all kinds of curious, particularly given that the battery life and overall performance were already pretty solid. Flyer owners, are you noticing any differences? Do tell.

Happy EVO 4G owners get Gingerbread update, right on schedule (updated)

Right on schedule, Sprint made Gingerbread available to any and all EVO 4G owners willing to check for the update manually (and if you’re a fan of this site, we suspect you are). As a PSA, you won’t just be getting Android 2.3, but also Gmail and SMS fixes, and a tweak for the phone’s power management software. We’ve been getting a flood of tips from delighted readers in various markets who report the upgrade went smoothly. Can’t be bothered to check for updates? You’ll likely get a prompt to download it on Monday. So, Froyo, good night and good luck, and to everyone else, happy Friday!

Update: Many of you are reporting that the update rendered Netflix unusable. The company just tweeted that it’s aware of the incompatibility and is “investigating” the issue. No word on a fix just yet.
