VAIO L is Sony’s first touchscreen PC, starts at $1,300

Hey there Windows 7, we hear you’ve got some fancy new touch features, huh? Well, Sony’s jumping on the ballooning bandwagon of manufacturers with a heart for touchscreen PCs, putting forward its very first model with the all-new L series all-in one. Sony is billing it as part HDTV and part PC (in typical Sony fashion), with Blu-ray playback and what sounds to be a TV tuner tucked underneath, piling up to a $1,300 starting price. Not bad for a 24-inch multitouch screen.

Update: We just went hands-on with the VAIO L and it’s got a pretty great touchscreen sensor — quite responsive and accurate, even in multitouch gestures. Unfortunately, the TouchSmart-style software that Sony’s packed in his woefully half-baked. Hopefully what we saw was just an early prototype of sorts, or Sony’s got some serious work to before October 22. Overall the hardware is pretty Sony-ish and minimal, while the glossy display looks pretty brilliant. Pics below.

Sony X Series Hands On: It Feels Like Special Effects

How light is Sony’s carbon-fiber X Series, the “lightest notebook in the world”? It feels fake, like a trick.

That’s in part, because it is a trick, since it has netbook guts and Sony’s asking you to pay $1300 for it. But, in your hand, it makes you question how skinny is too skinny, how much weightlessness (1.6 pounds of it, to be precise) is an asset before it approaches nothingness. (The fatty VGA port very nearly destroys the illusion, though.) The effect, still, is remarkable, at least at first touch.

Sturdiness? It borders on feeling fragile, but never quite crosses that line. When you try to bend it, you definitely feel like there’s a breaking point that won’t require a ton of additional force on your part.

The keyboard layout is around 90 percent of full sized which is why it feels a little cramped, but I typed better than I expected, honestly, even with its tiny ticky-tacky keys that fit the fingertips of a small child. The multitouch trackpad only supports zoom gestures—no two-finger scrolling—which are janky at best, at least inside of Internet Exploder. (Sub-question: Why can’t PC makers do a decent multitouch trackpad?)

Considering it’s a got 2GHz Atom chip, notching it a 2.4 Windows system rating on the one I messed with, it moved pretty decently, more nimbly than I’d have expected, even with Windows Media Center. This is mostly because of Windows 7 I suspect—with Vista it probably would’ve been tortuous.

Knowing that it’s running Atom inside, when it’s wrapped in feats of material and sensory goodness, definitely creates a sense of ambiguity, like Sony’s repeating the Vaio P all over again. Like it’s special effects. Except that it seems like it sorta kinda works this time, which is the actually weird part.

Sony VAIO CW announced, features Windows 7 for $799

Sony’s laptop event is underway, but we’ve got early pages detailing the new VAIO CW. Let’s just say it’s much more… reasonable than the VAIO X, packing up to a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with NVIDIA GeForce GT230M or GT210M graphics under a 14-inch screen, all starting at $799. It’s also a pretty chunky little thing, measuring 1.52 inches thick at the back hinge and weighing in at 5.3 pounds — but that means there’s room for a Blu-ray drive and both VGA and HDMI outputs, so you know, there’s just more of it to love.

Sony VAIO X announced, starts at $1,299

Sony’s just started a laptop-oriented event in NYC, but we just got our hands on what look like unpublished web pages for the new VAIO X and VAIO CW and an updated VAIO L machines. All of ’em now run Windows 7, of course, but the big news is apparent confirmation that the VAIO X will indeed have a 2GHz Atom — although it’s listed at a “2GHz Intel Processor,” the 533MHz bus speed also listed pretty much gives it away. And no, you’re not getting an Ion in this deal to make up for that starting $1,300 price tag — it’s Intel GMA500 graphics all the way. You’re also getting an integrated Verizon 3G card and both the standard and extended batteries, however. Still is that insane? It’s probably insane.

We’ll keep you updated as the event goes on, stay with us!

Sony UK site unveils new VAIO P with 2GHz Atom and Windows 7

Look, the upcoming VAIO X might be all fancy with its 11.6-inch screen and all day battery life, but Sony’s not ignoring its original underpowered-and-overpriced funky laptop — three new VAIO P configurations just went up on Sony’s UK site today, all sporting Windows 7. The big news is that the top-end configuration will now sport a 2.0GHz Atom Z550, but there’s also two low-end models with the 1.86GHz Atom Japanese P’s have had for a while now but only the $2,000 Signature model carried Stateside. Apart from that we’re not seeing much else — this certainly looks like a modest Win7-related spec bump and not the rumored VAIO P mark 2. No word on pricing or US availability yet, but we’re sure to find out more very, very soon.

[Thanks, Liam]

Sony VAIO X specs and pricing leak out — 2.0GHz Atom, $1,499?

We’re expecting the official launch of Sony’s hot little VAIO X ultraportable later today, but Boy Genius Report claims to have some leaked specs and pricing to think over while we wait — and if they’re accurate, you’ll be staring down the wrong end of a $1,499 price tag when all is said and done. Yeah, it’s not unexpected, but still, ouch. For your trouble, you’ll be getting what Sony’s calling the “world’s lightest notebook,” weighing in a just 1.5 pounds of carbon-fiber with an 11.6-inch LED display, SSD, multitouch trackpad, and a 3.5-hour standard battery life that can be pushed to 14 hours using a “super-extended” battery. Okay, not bad, but what’s running this show? Well, we’ve got some potentially bad news to report — we’ve been told that the VAIO X will have a 2.0GHz Atom Z550 inside, just like the prototypes. Yep, that’s another $1,499 Sony Atom laptop — we’ll wait for the official announcement to confirm before we start wringing our hands, but we’re open to your lamentations in comments.

Sony’s CEATEC concept party includes Walkman bracelet and 0.2mm thin OLED

We’ve yet to see a trade show where Sony left its Rhode Island-sized booth at home, and CEATEC is no exception. Aside from pushing its 1080p 3D installations with an epic amount of force, the company also had a smattering of swank new concepts on display that caught our eyes. A 0.2 millimeter-thin flexible OLED display was alive and displaying content, while an ultrathin Reader mock-up looked more like a MID and less like a Kindle. Without question, the two items that took our breath away were the all-panel laptop (which tossed the traditional keyboard in favor of a single, swooping display) and the Walkman bracelet, which did little more than talk dirty to us and get our imaginations working overtime. Unfortunately, all the good stuff was behind bulletproof glass with practically zero information to digest, but you can indulge your senses anyway in the gallery below and video after the break.

Sony VAIO X stars in esoteric promo video

We’d have much rather gotten a VAIO X video promising us an upgrade to CULV internals over the Atom in the demo units, but instead we’re getting tinkling pianos and sword-based visual metaphors. At least there’s a hint of an “autumn” release date, we suppose. Full video after the break.

[Thanks, Bob]

Video: Sony confirms it’s ‘bringing home 3D’ starting in 2010

As it turns out, yesterday’s report was spot-on. Sony today announced that it is bringing the experience of looking absolutely ridiculous in 3D glasses home to the living room. The initiative is “starting in 2010” and will expand through BRAVIA LCD HDTVs, VAIO machines, PlayStation 3, and Blu-ray discs… and not in the press release, but we clearly see a CyberShot digital camera in the promotional video (look out, Fujifilm). It’s hard to say from the wording if all the listed product lines will go 3D next year, but from what we gather there’ll at least be BRAVIA sets in time for that Christmas. Curious see the zaniest video this side of the second dimension? Well, we don’t have that, but you can giggle your way through Sony’s promo after the break.

Rail-Thin Carbon Fiber Sony Vaio X Series Video and Details

Sony wowed us this morning with its Vaio X Series, but details are now emerging. According to this video, the .55-inch thin system may be more netbook than notebook. And boy, do I want to hold it in my arms.

Thanks to its 11.2 inch display it looks really compact and that carbon fiber outside and keyboard, oh that keyboard, make my mouth water. As for what is on the inside, we don’t know much. The guys at NetbookNews say there is discussion of an Intel Atom processor (they seem to be hoping for the next generation Pineview CPU), but we won’t be surprised if they go with Intel’s new ULV offering. Either way it is something low powered since Sony has been touting crazy all day battery life (from the video though the battery doesn’t seem to be replaceable).

Now it would be typical Sony to jack up the price on this 1.5 pound baby, but I am thinking it might not be as high as some anticipate (crossing my fingers for under $750). Don’t forget Sony was saying a few months ago it wants to enter the low cost ultraportable space. Our sources tell us this sweet lappie will launch sometime in October with Windows 7. [Netbook News]
