Apple Releases iOS 4.2.6 With Fixes for Verizon iPhone

Apple has made a new version of iOS available for download. iOS v4.2.6 doesn’t bring new newspaper subscription payments, or fix AirPlay to work properly with third-party apps. It doesn’t add gestures to the iPad. In fact, it does almost nothing, unless you are the lucky recipient of the new Verizon iPhone which officially arrives today.

Apple’s release notes are infamously sparse, and this is no exception. Here is the entirety of the “What’s new” section on MacUpdate:

Fixes a bug to ensure Personal Hotspot data usage is accurately reported (for Verizon iPhones).

The update, previously available as a direct download to patch review units, should be ready for you when you plug in your new Verizon iPhone 4 today and is, as ever, free.

Visualized: a hundred CDMA iPhone 4 handsets prepare for Best Buy assault

Too preoccupied to pre-order? Looks like Best Buy’s your best bet starting tomorrow morning. And don’t try anything sneaky — you know, like sneaking the whole lot into Israel.

[Thanks, J.]

Verizon successfully completes first VoLTE call on commercial network in the world, plans 2012 availability

Verizon has just announced that it has completed the first voice over LTE (VoLTE) call on a commercial network anywhere in the world today, a 33-second dialogue between employees on LG Revolutions in the company’s headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, following it up with a number of other calls where staffers were able to talk and use data services simultaneously — thanks in no small part to the fact that LTE treats voice just as it treats any other type of data. We’d initially gotten the impression yesterday that Verizon would be starting to roll out voice over LTE (VoLTE) with the Revolution in mid-2011, but the company’s press release today is saying that they’ll be working to “enhance” the VoLTE experience in 2011 with commercially availability now expected next year. High-fidelity calls are expected to be part of that experience, so it’ll be harder than ever to hold a call when you’ve got a bad cold. Remember the throat lozenges, alright? Follow the break for the full press release.

Visualized: Verizon iPhone customer shipped a device in test mode

If these screens look vaguely familiar, that’s because they’re essentially the same ones Apple has been using to test the iPhone’s various components since day one. Problem is, this is apparently a production Verizon iPhone that was shipped out to an actual customer this week, which… well, let’s just put it this way: it’s not going to help you play Angry Birds any faster. They’ve tried to restore the phone using iTunes to no avail, so here’s the million-dollar question: collectible or worthless return? Hit the gallery for a couple more shots.

[Thanks, Alexei]

BlackBerry PlayBook coming to Verizon too?

BlackBerry PlayBook coming to Verizon too?

News that the PlayBook would be at least initially available only on Sprint surely elicited some mixed reactions — hooray for WiMAX but locking your tablet to a single carrier is never any fun. Now Skatter Tech has uncovered a curious page that previously allowed people to join a sort of early-access program for a PlayBook on VZW. The page certainly looks official enough, and the ownership of the site — a marketing agency that works for both RIM and Verizon — also makes a compelling case. Of course, it could just be a fantasy dreamed up by this agency of its two clients working together, but we’ll go ahead and hold out hope for a provider-agnostic PlayBook — maybe even one with LTE.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play may be headed to Verizon

If you’re looking for reasons not to jump on the Verizon iPhone bandwagon, here’s a pretty compelling, albeit unconfirmed, one: the Xperia Play may be headed to Big Red as well. In comparing Sony Ericsson’s thumb-friendly Android handset to the iPhone 4, Wirefly has listed VZW as the carrier for the Play. This is the first we’ve really heard of a US provider for the phone, though we’d hardly be surprised if Sony Ericsson opts to spam it out to all four major networks. It did as much in the UK, where every single operator will try to sell you one in April, and we don’t see why that strategy should change on US soil. The Xperia Play will be announced in full this Sunday, February 13th, when we might just learn more about its global availability… if we’re really polite and wear our PlayStation T-shirts, presumably.
