Hasta La Gadget!

So much for Verizon being the carrier of choice when it comes to accelerated Android updates, eh? Those who selected Big Red for their Galaxy S have been waiting on a Froyo build for what feels like an eternity, with our brethren to the north already enjoying the spoils — things like Flash support and an integrated mobile hotspot. Of course, Samsung once promised that all Galaxy S phones (yeah, including the Fascinate) would receive Android 2.2 at some point in time, and while an official release is still eluding us, it looks as if the day is drawing ever closer. The fine folks over at Android Central simply couldn’t wait any longer, and they’re taken it upon themselves to wrap up the TouchWiz-infused EB01 build for all to enjoy. Naturally, you’ll need to do a fair amount of hacking to get this up and running without anyone’s consent, but all the details you’re craving await you there in the source. It looks like HTC just got the go-ahead for a 4G smartphone from that great predictor of market preparedness, the FCC — and all signs point to Thunderbolt. PG05100, as it’s so lovingly referred to, operates on Verizon’s 700MHz LTE as well as its CDMA / EVDO bands, and is set up for SVDO and SVLTE (or simultaneous CDMA voice and LTE data) — definitely in keeping with Verizon’s plans. Unsurprisingly, HTC’s slapped the usual confidentiality request on this one, asking that any telling photos remain under wraps until March 31st. Considering what we’ve heard about a delayed Valentine’s Day debut, could this mean an April Fools’ launch for Verizon’s first 4G LTE smartphone? Our heart tells us to doubt it, but if PG05100 turns out to be the real deal, Thunderbolt should hit the US sometime soon. Not soon enough, mind you, but you catch the drift.

Verizon has just announced that it has completed the first voice over LTE (VoLTE) call on a commercial network anywhere in the world today, a 33-second dialogue between employees on LG Revolutions in the company’s headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, following it up with a number of other calls where staffers were able to talk and use data services simultaneously — thanks in no small part to the fact that LTE treats voice just as it treats any other type of data. We’d initially gotten the impression yesterday that Verizon would be starting to roll out voice over LTE (VoLTE) with the Revolution in mid-2011, but the company’s press release today is saying that they’ll be working to “enhance” the VoLTE experience in 2011 with commercially availability now expected next year. High-fidelity calls are expected to be part of that experience, so it’ll be harder than ever to hold a call when you’ve got a bad cold. Remember the throat lozenges, alright? News that the PlayBook would be at least initially available only on Sprint surely elicited some mixed reactions — hooray for WiMAX but locking your tablet to a single carrier is never any fun. Now Skatter Tech has uncovered a curious page that previously allowed people to join a sort of early-access program for a PlayBook on VZW. The page certainly looks official enough, and the ownership of the site — a marketing agency that works for both RIM and Verizon — also makes a compelling case. Of course, it could just be a fantasy dreamed up by this agency of its two clients working together, but we’ll go ahead and hold out hope for a provider-agnostic PlayBook — maybe even one with LTE.

Apple and Verizon’s long-awaited partnership is nearly upon us, folks, and the final piece to the puzzle is general availability of the hallowed iPhone 4. You’re now able to order or reserve your own at the online stores of both carrier and phone maker, though shipping dates for early orders are listed at a distant February 18th. We’d just reserve one and go down to our nearest physical outlet to pick it up tomorrow.
