Hasta La Gadget!

Right on cue (sort of), Verizon Wireless’ branded V Cast Apps market has finally seen the light of day. We’ve actually heard about the store since last summer, but it wasn’t until the carrier’s LTE forum at CTIA that we had a confirmed date. As noted then, the first device to get the portal is the BlackBerry Storm2, with other RIM devices (and hopefully other mobile platforms) in the coming months. It’s not taking the place of BlackBerry App World, so now that we’ve got two coexisting markets on one device, it’s time to see just how strong that V Cast branding is…

Let’s start with the obvious proviso here, the above image is so painfully easy to fake that even our computer illiterate grandparents could mock one up within a few minutes. That said, it’s purportedly a screenshot of a little oopsie by Google’s online store, which is said to have briefly displayed the Verizon option for Nexus One handsets as available to buy for $199 plus the relevant contractual shackles. We wouldn’t normally credit such unverifiable information, but then we’re also hearing from Soft Sailor that a highly trusted “inside” source of theirs is reporting that Verizon-carried, Sense-less Nexus Ones will be out and about “by the end of next week.” Given that the earlier mooted date of March 23 has now come and gone, we’re apprehensive about investing too much of ourselves in these rumors, but those supposed CDMA Nexus One shipments from HTC have to come out and play at some point, right?

Update: jkOnTheRun has more insider info to share with us on this topic. James Kendrick’s people “in positions to know” tell him that the Verizon Nexus One will definitely show up in April, which meshes with the Spring timeframe we’ve already been given, but there’s also word about a “surprise” that other US carriers lack. Whether that refers to Sense-related enhancements or some other software optimizations, we’ll have to wait and see.

Remember when we heard that Verizon Wireless just might be able to bump its commercial LTE rollout to the first quarter of 2010? Man, talk about having our hopes and dreams dashed. Here at CTIA, we heard a few details on the company’s most up-to-date deployment plans, and it sounds like things are pretty well locked into place at this point. Tony Melone, the company’s Senior Vice President and CTO, seemed remarkably enthused that a bona fide LTE network would be launching “in the not too distant future,” and when pressed for specifics, he stated that they would launch “25 to 30 networks this year, covering one third of America by the end of 2010.” Beyond that, we’re looking at a footprint twice that size “15 months” after the initial rollout, and by the end of 2013, the company’s 4G coverage map will be the same size, “if not larger,” than its existing 3G map. Of course, the carrier insisted that they wouldn’t be abandoning 3G advancement while being fixated on 4G, noting that it was moving “fast and aggressively” on both fronts, with hopes that its LTE network would eventually eclipse even the 3G networks (in terms of coverage size) of competitors. Them’s bold words, VZW, and we’ll be carefully watching to see if that really does come to fruition.

We’re here at Verizon Wireless’ LTE forum at CTIA 2010, and a higher-up speaking about application development just let a sweet little nugget of information slip: the long-awaited V Cast Apps market will launch on March 29th (that’s the new target, anyway). If you’ll recall, we’ve been hearing about this portal ever since last summer, but we’re guessing that a bona fide launch was put on pause in order to tweak things for Verizon’s eventual LTE release (a bit we’ll touch on here later). Initially, the BlackBerry Storm (and Storm2, presumably) will be supported, with other RIM devices coming onboard shortly thereafter. The rollout will continue over the coming weeks and months, hopefully to a few other mobile operating systems.

Responding to a few questions, Verizon insists that its own storefront won’t take away from “other markets,” namely the Android Marketplace. Instead, they’re “perpetuating the ecosystem,” with the app store simply being a vessel of distribution. In other words, app devs are stoked that their software could be found in multiple stores.

It’s a mighty aggressive schedule for a handset that hasn’t even been announced yet, but the latest scuttlebutt regarding the HTC Incredible suggests that the phone will make its debut on Verizon’s airwaves about two weeks from now. It was already known that the Incredible was destined for a rendezvous with Big Red, but this latest word solidifies and specifies that future nicely — and it’s claimed to come directly from internal sources at Verizon. There’s also further mention of 512MB of DRAM allied to a downclocked Snapdragon CPU (capable of 1GHz, running at 768MHz), an 8 megapixel camera, a 1,300 mAh battery, and body dimensions almost indistinguishable from those belonging to the Nexus One. Good thing too, since Verizon is still keeping us waiting on a mysterious Spring release of Google’s own-brand phone. We get the feeling Android 2.1 and the new Sense UI will fill that gap nicely, however, and if you really must have that 1GHz speed, there are ways to achieve such things too.
