Underabove is a two-eyed camera, designed to float twixt air and water and snap photos of both worlds simultaneously. The concept design, shaped much like a pair of conjoined bowling-pins, is weighted with water so it will float in the sea like an iceberg, only with just 50% of its body pulled underwater by the liquid ballast.
The camera, designed by In Kyung Han, has a lens in each end, both of which snap a picture when you trip the shutter or use the self-timer, which is set by a dial around the upper neck. There’s also an LED screen for framing and reviewing pictures, and even a flash for filling shadows or capturing your night-time skinny-dipping. And of course, the whole thing is waterproof.
It’s a fun idea, but a rather specialist, not to mention bulky, solution. How hard is it really to quickly grab a shot above and below the waves with a regular waterproof compact? On the other hand, it is cute, and would make a great bath-toy. Although in that case you might want to switch the camera off first.

LED lights are cool, you’re cool, why not combine the two, right? We doubt that’s quite the reasoning that led to this international research project, but it’s certainly an appealing way to look at it. Our old buddy John Rogers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has headed up a research team with participants from the US, China, Korea, and Singapore, who have together produced and demonstrated a new flexible and implantable LED array. Bettering previous efforts at inserting lights under the human skin, this approach allows for stretching and twisting by as much as 75 percent, while the whole substrate is encased in thin silicon rubber making it waterproof. Basically, it’s a green light to subdermal illumination, which could aid such things as monitoring the healing of wounds, activating light-sensitive drug delivery, spectroscopy, and even robotics. By which we’re guessing they mean our robot overlords will be able to color-code us more easily. Yeah, that must be it.

At CTIA today we got the opportunity to submerge the Motorola Defy, a dust-proof, water and scratch-resistant Android device, and it came out completely unscathed. Since we’ve heard plenty about this hardware on the specs end, and even spotted it in the wild last month, we’ll just leave you to this video and let you on your way.

Yep — the same folks that enabled your iPod nano 5G to become an underwater camera have just created yet another underwater armband for Apple’s latest. H2O Audio’s Amphibx Grip is specifically designed to keep the latest iPod nano and iPod shuffle shielded from the harmful, oftentimes fatal effects of liquid, promising a “100 percent watertight and secure seal that provides waterproofing up to 12 feet.” We’re told that the ClearTouch Window allows for full operation of touchscreen and button controls, and if you’re wondering, the company would be more than happy to sell you a set of waterproof earbuds to go along with it. PhotographyBlog has indulged us with a thorough review of Samsung’s 12.2 megapixel WP10 waterproof compact — known as the AQ100 stateside — and their takeaways are mixed. One major concern is that the screen misleadingly makes photos appear overexposed. Its slow 5x zoom, run of the mill feature set and measly battery life good for approximately 150 shots per charge doesn’t improve the situation; nor does the lack of separate charger for juicing dead spares while using the camera. That said, an included HDMI port, a clever SmartAuto shooting mode, and relatively quick two second start up time does help balance the equation. Throw in the fact that it’s waterproof up to 3 meters, takes decent imagery, and has an MSRP of $199 with street prices dipping even lower and they concede it’s not a terrible proposition as a laid-back compact. Whether it’s a better deal than a slew of other Cousteau-worthy options released this year such as the Finepix XP10, Sony TX5, or Pentax Optio w90 is still something we’ll leave you to mull over. Panasonic’s gone on a real tear here, releasing two new Toughbook models at once. While you grapple with the implications of such a thing, let’s get down to details. The new 31 and 19 Series Toughbooks are 13.1-inch and 10.4-inch models, respectively, and as far as specs go, they both pack in a 160GB hard drive, up to 6GB of DDR3 SDRAM (with 2GB coming standard), and Intel QM57 Express chipset, and 1024 x 768 resolution displays. Both come with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed, and the Toughbook 31 has a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 CPU, the 19’s go a 1.2 GHZ inside. Other than that they’ve both got Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, an HDMI slot, four USB ports, and an SD card slot. Of course, they’re also drop resistant in addition to being dust and waterproof. They’ll be available starting in mid-September in Japan.

Usually, I have no problem declaring something is dumb beyond words or not. This one has me stumped though: Wavetooth, Brando’s waterproof Bluetooth headset.
With the traditional Bluetooth headset, you had to be careful where you took your phone. Now with Wavetooth, which is certified waterproof up to 3 meters, or a little under 10 feet, you can easily go swimming while still yammering on the phone with your best friend. Or relax in the bath and listen to music without worrying about anything getting wet.
Wavetooth works with the iPhone and any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone (which is practically every phone on the market nowadays).
The Bluetooth headset comes comes with a special bag that holds your smartphone and keeps it dry. The material is thin and specially designed so that the it doesn’t interfere with the headset communicating with the device. You don’t even need to take the phone out of the case – special “Touch Functionality” lets you control the iPhone by pressing on the case surface.
Wavetooth claims 13 hours talk time and 240 hours standby time before needing a charge.
Priced at $57 and available now on Brando, it’s a little pricey. But for people always on the go, Wavetooth extends where you can use your phone.
JVC’s been a mainstay in the handheld camcorder realm, but along with Sony, Kodak, Sanyo, Samsung and just about every other consumer electronics company in operation today, it’s recently decided to hop onboard the pocket camcorder bandwagon. Today, the firm is introducing a diminutive duo in the Picsio GC-WP10 and GC-FM2, both of which are capable of logging 1,920 x 1,080/30fps clips. There’s also inbuilt image stabilization, an HDMI output, a 3-inch rear touchscreen, compatibility with EyeFi’s WiFi-enabled SD cards and a time-lapse recording feature for speeding things up on the fly. The WP10 steps it up a notch by being encased in a waterproof enclosure, though the omission of an optical zoomer puts somewhat of a damper on things. The FM2 boasts a pop-out USB plug and the both of ’em tout an SD / SDHC / SDXC card slot; the WP10 also adds an MP3 audio recorder for good measure. Check the FM2 early next month for $179.95 and the WP10 in late September for $20 more, but be sure to visit that More Coverage link first for a translated review.
