Ubuntu Site Crumbles After Releasing 7.04

This article was written on April 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

Kubuntu and Ubuntu logos

The Ubuntu website has begun to crumble from the incredible number of visitors that are visiting the site looking for the newest version of Ubuntu. The load was so bad that Ubuntu has temporarily replaced the homepage with a low-bandwidth version that only provides links to mirrors, as well as the release notes.

Even the main Ubuntu site is going a little slow when it comes to loading that page, so I made a mirror of their current homepage which lists all of the different places you can download it from. If your Internet connection can’t handle downloading the the 694MB ISO image that has to be burned to a CD, then you can just order a the latest version already on CD at no additional cost.

We have previously put together a great screenshot gallery of the Kubuntu and Ubuntu 7.04 Beta release, and nothing (besides for bug fixes) has really changed since that gallery was posted. Here is a quick overview of what’s new:

  • Networking improvements to make it even easier to connect to a wireless or wired network.
  • Disk usage analyzer lets you see where your hard drive space is going.
  • When trying to play media files, Ubuntu will try to install the necessary codecs automatically, and start playing the desired file.
  • New networking sharing makes it easy to network desktop computers without needing servers to assign IP addresses or names and allows users to automatically discover and join a wireless network and share music, find printers and exchange files.
  • 2 new games: Chess and Sudoku.
  • Some new artwork, including a new default background and splash screen.
  • New help center to find the things you want a little easier.
  • Enable some great 3D desktop effects in just one click!

If you want to try Ubuntu out yourself, but you’re not sure how to use the CD just head on over and read the article that Chris wrote. It will walk you through all the tools you’ll need to get Ubuntu up and running on your computer without even needing to install it!

Alright, here is a recap on links that will be important to you:

Thanks for the tip Cory!

CanvasPaint.org – A Near Perfect Copy of Microsoft Paint

This article was written on January 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

This is one of those just-for-fun websites that’s worth paying a visit to. Go to www.canvaspaint.org and check it out, come back, and now tell me that doesn’t look just like Microsoft Paint? Cool huh? Now of course, who really needs an online version when you already have the application on your own computer ( if you use Windows), and if you don’t use Windows, you could probably care less about the application anyways. Regardless, it’s still pretty cool, and a job well done.

According to the site, it’s a “near pixel-perfect copy of Microsoft Paint in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, using the <canvas> tag as specified by WHATWG and supported by Safari 1.3, Firefox 1.5, and Opera 9.” If you decide to visit and play with it, and you happen to create a magnificent drawing, you can save it to your hard drive using File > Download.  You have to be using either Firefox 2 or Opera 9 for this saving feature to work. www.canvaspaint.org

One last thought,  I’m surprised that Microsoft hasn’t gone after them for Copyright issues.

P.S.- Like my snowman I created in under a minute? Okay, so I’m not meant to be an artist…..

DivShare Disappoints – No Longer Unlimited

This article was written on January 18, 2008 by CyberNet.

DivShare Storage Any of the DivShare users out there know that they’ve been having troubles keeping up with their excessive growth, and as a result the site has been running pretty slow lately. That’s one of the main reasons we’ve tried to refrain from posting downloads in the last month or two on their site.

They are now collapsing under the pressure, and are resorting to what many people hoped they would never succumb to. All accounts now have both storage and bandwidth restrictions imposed on them to help control “abusive” users. Users with free accounts will receive 5GB of storage space and 50GB of bandwidth per month. Here’s what DivShare had to say about the “new feature”:

We’ve mapped out the new plans so that less than 1 in 10 current users will need to upgrade. In fact, 99% of users use less than 5 GB of storage, and 90% of users serve less than 50 GB of downloads each month. We’re making the change because a very small group of users is using a very large amount of bandwidth and storage space, and by doing so is degrading the DivShare experience for the rest of our 250,000 members.

DivShare does still offer premium accounts which you would have to pay for on a monthly basis, but all of them are still limited in both storage and bandwidth. How about we take a look at their monthly offerings:

  • For $6.95/month you get 10GB of storage and 100GB of bandwidth
  • For $14.95/month you get 25GB of storage and 250GB of bandwidth
  • For $28.95/month you get 50GB of storage and 500GB of bandwidth

What this essentially means is that many users will probably just create several different DivShare accounts, and disperse their downloads across them. For me I’m going to try and find a different host for my files. Heck, I might just go over to GoDaddy where I can get 100GB of storage and 1,000GB of bandwidth for $6.99/month.

On the DivShare blog some users are expressing their concern for the change, but there is some reassurance for existing users. If you’re already over the storage limit your files will not be deleted, but you also won’t be able to upload any new files until you get under the storage limit. On your member homepage you can see how much storage and bandwidth you’re currently eating up, and in one week DivShare will be enforcing the restrictions.

Is this the day DivShare died?

Thanks for the tip Radu!

Become an ASCII Art Pro Overnight

This article was written on July 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNet ASCII

I’m sure that you’ve seen ASCII art similar to the image pictured above. It’s where someone takes a photo and arranges characters in a precise way to accurately represent the original image. Take our logo for example, in the above image a bunch of characters and spaces were placed next to each other until they created something that looked right.

Doing this can be a painstaking process, and frankly it is something that I would never want to do myself. The logo that I created above was done using a service called Photo2Text, where all you have to do is input an image and it will spit out a text file for you to download. You just open that file up in Notepad (with wordwrap turned off) and you’ll see a masterpiece.

I was actually having some fun with this after downloading the Firefox extension, which lets you right-click on any image on the Internet and have it converted to ASCII art. I found a few images to convert and here are the results:

Note: I reduced the font size to 4 so that the images could easily be seen. The larger the font size you pick in Notepad the further away you’ll need to be to recognize the image.

Eiffel Tower:

ASCII Eiffel Tower

2009 Camaro:

ASCII 2009 Camaro

Michael Jordan:

ASCII Michael Jordan

See how easy it was for me to become an ASCII art pro? Go ahead and grab some photos to do this with and head on over to the Photo2Text site. You’ll be impressing your friends in no time, and if you find yourself using it more than you thought it might be beneficial to install the Firefox extension.

CyberNotes: Top 10 Sidebar Sites

This article was written on August 29, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Web Browser Wednesday

I’ve been addicted to sidebars ever since I bought my first widescreen monitor. Sidebars have the ability to provide a lot of information inside a very small space, and it wasn’t until recently that I fully started to utilize them. It all started when I put the Tab-Bar on the side in both my Firefox and Opera installations (video on customizing Opera), and then seeing how Start++ handled the implementation of mobile sites capped it off.

So what I’m going to show you today is my top 10 favorite sites to put in your browser’s sidebar. Most of the sites mentioned were created for mobile devices, which means they load at least twice as fast as the normal site. This makes it even more appealing to me.

Both Opera and Firefox support this kind of feature, so I’ll get started by showing you how to do it in each of those browsers.

–Firefox–

Having a site open in the sidebar is pretty easy in Firefox:

  1. Right-click on one of the URL’s that we provide below, and then bookmark it.
    Firefox Sidebar Instructions
  2. After you have saved the bookmark, go back to the Bookmarks Menu and right-click on the bookmark. Choose the Properties option.
    Firefox Sidebar Instructions
  3. Now check the box that says Load this bookmark in the sidebar:
    Firefox Sidebar Instructions
  4. The next time you open that bookmark it will popup in the sidebar!

–Opera–

Opera is actually a little easier when it comes to placing sites in the sidebar, and they have more features as well. One thing that you should know is that Opera refers to the sidebar as “panels,” and here is how you add a bookmark to a panel:

  1. Right-click on a URL to bookmark it. Then click the button labeled Details, and then check the box that says Show in panel:
    Opera Sidebar Instructions
  2. Now you’ll notice that the bookmark was also added to your list of panels. Note: If the Panel’s bar takes up too much room read our tutorial on making it smaller.

Opera’s additional sidebar features come in handy for displaying sites. When you’re viewing a site in one of the panels, you can adjust the zoom so that the text is bigger or smaller, or you can have the site optimized for small screen display (removes most images, etc…). I recommend that you try out the small screen rendering on all of the sites, and you’ll notice that some of them look better that way:

Opera Sidebar Instructions

–Top 10 Sidebar Sites–

Alright, on to the sites! I’ve gone through dozens of different mobile sites (including ones made for the iPhone) and were able to pick 10 of them that look and work well in the sidebar. So without further ado, here are my favorites in no particular order:

Tip: The site titles are hyperlinked to their mobile sites, and all you have to do is follow the instructions given above for bookmarking them in your browser.

  1. Weather Underground
What you’ll want to do with this site is visit the URL in your browser first, enter in your Zipcode, and then bookmark that address. Then you won’t have to worry about putting in that information each time. If you’re using Opera I recommend enabling the small screen rendering that I mentioned above.
    Weather in the Sidebar
  2. goMovies
Just like the previous one, you’ll want to visit the URL, enter in your Zipcode, and then bookmark that address. Then each time you pull up your movie listings, it will automatically retrieve them for the theaters in your area. Opera users should probably set the zoom a little lower (I use about 80%).
    Movies in the Sidebar
  3. Gmail
The mobile Gmail site not only looks good, but gives you fast access to all of your emails. Using it you can read and compose emails, which makes it an amazing time saver! I’ve been using this for most of my mail needs since it is so much faster than the actual Gmail interface.
  4. Google Calendar
This gives you a quick overview of your upcoming events, but the best part is that you add items to your calendar from here.
    Google Calendar in the Sidebar
  5. Remember the Milk
My favorite task manager now has the ability to sit inside of my sidebar. You can add new tasks and see what’s due. I’ve found myself using the service a lot more now that it is so condensed and easily accessible.
  6. Google Notebook
You can manage your entire Google Notebook from your sidebar.
  7. Digg
If you’re a Digg addict then I think this is a must. The mobile version of the Digg site gives you a fast-loading alternative to view the news. It’s nice when it only takes a second to load instead of 30-seconds like the normal site does sometimes!
    Digg in the Sidebar
  8. Google Talk
Chat it up with all your friends with this handy little Flash app.
  9. Facebook
I know that a lot of you are addicted to Facebook, and so I thought this would fit right in. It displays recent events from your news feed, upcoming events, and lets you change your status.
    Facebook in the Sidebar
  10. Twitter
This is a really handy site for anyone that uses Twitter. You can update your status, and view recent entries from your friends. The small screen rendering in Opera is also really nice for this one.
    Twitter in the Sidebar

–Overview–

I’m finding myself using sites in the sidebar more and more these days, especially since they often reduce the number of extensions you need to install. If you come across any sites that work well in the sidebar, let us know in the comments below. I’m sure there are a bunch of great ones out there, and I just wanted to get the ball rolling by listing off my top 10!

2007 CyberNet Awards: Best Customer Service

This article was written on December 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s time to hand out the first of many 2007 CyberNet Awards! The category is Best Customer Service, and we have three different winners in this category. These are all companies that we’ve had to deal with on items that we’ve purchased, but ended up having troubles somewhere down the road.

–3rd Place: ESET

I recently purchased a two-year subscription to the new ESET Security Suite, and I have to say that it is truly an incredible product. After using it for a few days I noticed that there was an issue with the firewall when trying to utilize the shared clipboard in Windows Remote Desktop. They promptly responded (within 24-hours), and after several emails they were able to pinpoint the issue.

They’ve told me that it will be fixed when they release the next update, which could be days or weeks from now. The issue isn’t that big of a deal, but the fact that they took notice and addressed the issue so quickly shows real value in their customer service department. My experience with them isn’t over yet, as I still have to wait and see how long it takes for the update to be released, but so far their responsiveness is outstanding.

–2nd Place: Newegg

Newegg is a geek’s haven when it comes to finding gadgets and gizmos…if it’s electronic, they probably carry it. But even more importantly if you have any problems they will definitely cover your back. I’ve only had one instance where I’ve had to take advantage of Newegg’s customer service, and dealing with their friendly staff was a pleasure. They had the item replaced in no time at all, and it’s no wonder why they have a rating of 9.72 out of 10 from 17,000+ reviews. From that score they’ve received a 9.72 for their customer service, and a 9.56 for returns/replacements. There needs to be more standup companies like Newegg in the world!

–1st Place: Logitech

I’ve had my Logitech MX Revolution mouse for over a year now, but back over the summer I had a little dilemma. Just 7-months after purchasing the mouse I couldn’t get it to power on for the life of me. Out of nowhere it died, and I was left using an old straggly wired mouse that wasn’t nearly as nice.

I called up Logitech since it was still under warranty, and like any other company I was put on hold. Luckily it wasn’t more than 5 minutes later that I was talking to a representative. I only had to explain once what happened, and within 5 minutes the representative said that they would ship out a new mouse immediately. The guy told me to scratch off the serial number on the broken mouse and pitch it in the garbage!

Within a week I had the new mouse in hand, and not having to hassle over shipping the old one back is what really gave Logitech an A+ in my book. Since then Ashley has also picked up the same mouse, and it all stems from the outstanding customer service experience I had with them. I feel more reassured purchasing a company’s product when they are confident enough to stand behind.

–And Your Winners–

Now it is time for you to chime in! Let us know in the comments who earned your “Best Customer Service 2007″ award.

This article was written on March 06, 2008 by CyberNet.

First Flickr teamed up with Picnik to offer a built-in photo editing service and now Photobucket, one of the most popular image-hosting sites out there has teamed up with FotoFlexer. Both Picnik and FotoFlexer are great services and allow for convenient and easy editing of photos online. Here’s what Photobucket users will be able to do with the help of FotoFlexer tools:

  • Resize
  • Rotate
  • Auto-fix
  • Red-eye removal
  • Crop
  • Add text
  • and more…

To use the FotoFlexer editing tools in Photobucket, do the following:

  1. Log-in to your Photobucket account and click on an image
  2. Look for the new “edit image” link at the top of the page in the toolbar
  3. Click the drop-down menu and select what you’d like to do

The different tools listed above aren’t all that you can do. By clicking “see much more,” you’ll be brought to a page where there are even more editing options. The interface looks like what you’d see if you were using FotoFlexer’s service outside of Photobucket and includes all of the new advanced features that they recently added.

Coming Soon: Unlimited Storage with AOL Mail

This article was written on June 11, 2007 by CyberNet.

AOL MailSoon AOL will be joining Yahoo on the list of web-based mail services that offer unlimited storage. Webware is reporting that in the coming weeks, we can expect both the unlimited storage as well as integrated chatting. The integrated chatting would make it easier for those who use AIM to chat with their contacts right from their mail, much like the integrated chat in Gmail. Surprisingly, AOL Mail remains the third most popular web-based mail service in the United States (behind Yahoo and Hotmail) and despite what some may think, it’s available to everybody (not just those using AOL’s dial-up service).

Additional updates will improve the service, make it more usable and easy to use, but also help it compete with the long list of competitors. Features will include:

  • RSS feeds
  • Attachment search capabilities
  • POP and IMAP compatibility

Hotmail and Gmail have yet to move to unlimited storage, although most of the population won’t ever need unlimited storage. It’s funny how 1GB of storage was an extremely generous offering when Gmail launched. Then 2GB of storage blew everybody away, but now it seems like nothing as other services move towards unlimited. I’m sure it won’t be long before we add another service to the “unlimited-storage” list. It’s turning into the place to be for web-based mail services.

Tech Tops the Top 100 Brands List

This article was written on April 23, 2008 by CyberNet.

Top 100 Brands.pngAny successful business owner knows that one of the most important aspects to any business is branding which goes hand-in-hand with marketing. When a company or product has been successfully branded, people will be able to recognize it and will be more likely to use it because it’s familiar (brand loyalty). Recently the list of the top 100 most powerful brands was released from market research firm Millward Brown Optimor. They interviewed over a million consumers around the World and used that combined with financial data to come up with their list. The results are actually pretty interesting, and 28 of the companies that made the top 100 are related to Tech in one way or another.

Out of all the brands out there, do you have any guesses as to which company topped the list? We were thinking something like Coca-Cola or McDonald’s would top the list because those seem to be two brands that everybody knows. As it turns out, good ole’ Google took the #1 slot. Here’s a look at the top 10 brands, and then we’ll take a look at some of the top Tech companies.

  • #1 – Google
  • #2 – GE
  • #3 – Microsoft
  • #4 – Coca-Cola
  • #5 – China Mobile
  • #6 – IBM
  • #7 – Apple
  • #8 – McDonald’s
  • #9 – Nokia
  • #10 – Marlboro

Are any of you surprised that Microsoft was number three on the list and IBM managed to beat out Apple? Joining the ranks of Google, Microsoft, IBM, Apple, and Nokia, other tech companies that made the list include:

  • #16 – HP
  • #22 – Cisco Systems
  • #26 – Oracle
  • #27 – Intel
  • #41 – Dell
  • #51 – BlackBerry
  • #61 – Amazon
  • #62 – Yahoo!
  • #65 – eBay
  • #92 – Motorola

It’s hard to believe that Yahoo ranks #62 on the list out of all of those because while Google has come and marched in on their parade, they are still a very popular Search Engine around the World.

Included in the report from company that put this list together was a note about three different emerging trends and one of them is the technology boom. They say, “The technology sector (including mobile operators), which accounted for 28 of the top 100 brands, outperformed all other categories in this year’s BrandZ Ranking, with a brand value growth of $187.5 billion. This is more than half of the Top 100′s total increase.”

Clearly the Technology Sector is booming, but will it last?

CyberNotes: How To Easily Build Your Own Website

This article was written on September 16, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Time-Saving Tuesday

If you’ve ever attempted to build your own website and your related skill level isn’t very high, you know that it can be a big headache. There are so many things you have to know if you truly want to build your own site from scratch. It’s definitely not something that anybody can do … unless SynthaSite is being used. SynthaSite takes the hassle out of building a website by providing a website builder to you, at no cost. Today for our Time-Saving Tuesday article we’ll be taking a look at how you can save yourself time creating a website of your own, by using SynthaSite.

What is SynthaSite

SynthaSite as mentioned, provides a hassle-free way for just about anybody, even your semi-computer illiterate parent or grandparent, to build a website for free. All you have to do is sign-up for an account and then you’ll be guided through the process of creating a site of your own. SynthaSite uses an AJAX-based editor for the bulk of the site creation process, and the editor is very easy to use.

In no time you’ll have a great looking site, one that you can be proud of, with the help and guidance of SynthaSite.

Creating a Site

After signing up for an account, you begin the process of creating your site. Basic steps are as follows:

  1. Name Your Site
  2. Choose a Style (good amount of different styles to choose from – 18 pages with four styles on each)
  3. Select a color palette that suites you – each “style” has a few color options to choose from
    synthasite 1.png

Once the basics are done, you’re taken to an editor where you can easily add content by clicking and dragging items to your page. This is the part of the SynthaSite that makes in shine.

Here are some examples of options you have when creating the site:

  • Add text – click
  • Insert images
  • Select a two column layout
  • Add your own HTML if you prefer
  • Insert widgets

Below is an image of what the interface looks like once you start the editing process (click to enlarge):

SynthaSite 3.png

All of your editing options are all on one page.

What we like about SynthaSite

For those of you who want a site that you can monetize, there’s good news. SynthaSite will allow you to incorporate Google AdSense on your site which is really nice. That’s the first thing we like about SynthaSite.

The second thing we like is the usability factor. We know that a lot of you are web-savvy, but a lot of you aren’t. For those of you that aren’t, this is a great way for you to build a site. When something is easy to use, obviously, you are more likely to use it. That’s the case with SynthaSite.

Lastly, we love that despite the fact this is a free service, they do not plaster your site with ads. In fact, there are no adds whatsoever and no banners. Nice!

Featured Sites

If you’d like to get an idea of what people are able to do with SynthaSite, you’ll want to check out their “Featured Sites.” Each month they feature several sites that were created using their service. These sites will help give you an idea as to what you will be able to do. Below is an example from this month (they are found on the SynthaSite homepage):

synthasite 4.png

Wrapping it up

If you have thought about creating your own site but you were discouraged simply because you didn’t know how, you’ll definitely want to give SynthaSite a try. We think you’ll find it as easy to use as we have and you’ll enjoy being able to create something of your own, on your own, for free. Does it have some limitations? Certainly, but for the basics that your average-joe wants, you’ll have no issues.
