Big Box Retailers Discount Wii to $170

wii450.jpg

Virtually every major retailer has just discounted the price of the Wii console, lending more credence to rumors of an impending official cut to $150.

Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, Target, and others, along with online stores like Amazon, have all discounted the price of the system. Last week, reports surfaced that Nintendo was planning to slash the official MSRP to $150, ahead of a rumored Wii 2 announcement at E3 in June.

It seems this move is for retailers to get as much money as possible from existing inventory before they have to lower their pricing to the new impulse-buy price point. So even though $170 is certainly a good deal, it might be wise to wait until next month, since this all but confirms those pending price drop rumors.

Students use Wii Balance Board for kids’ physical therapy system (video)

Nintendo’s kid-tested, researcher-approved Wii Balance Board has struck at the heart of the medical supply industry yet again — this time, the Bluetooth-connected scale is being used to help physically challenged children at Shriners Hospital in Houston. Seniors at Rice University hand-machined a set of force-sensitive parallel bars and programmed a monster-shooting game called Equilibrium to get kids excited about improving their walking gait, where they can play and score points with each proper step they take. The game automatically ratchets up the difficulty as patients improve, and handrails will play a part too, with a custom three-axis sensor box able to detect how much patients rely on the parallel bars (and dock points accordingly) in an effort to improve their posture. Yep, that sounds just a wee bit more useful than the Balance Board lie detector or the Wii Fit Roomba. Video after the break.

Nintendo Wii on sale at Toys R Us, Best Buy for $169.99

May 15th is still a month away, but the Nintendo Wii’s price won’t wait — both Best Buy and Toys ‘R’ Us already have the motion-controlled console on sale for $170 today. Mind you, this doesn’t look like a permanent price cut — note “Limited Time Offer!” above — but we wouldn’t be surprised if other retailers follow suit in very short order. With rumors swirling around deeper price cuts and perhaps, maybe, possibly even a new backwards-compatible HD machine, every Wii sold at $170 today could be a little extra gold in their pockets and less unwanted inventory to deal with.

Wii HD rearing long-rumored head at E3 2011?

Another year, another chance for Nintendo to deliver what it’s alternately denied and teased since day one — a successor to the Nintendo Wii capable of displaying games in high resolution. Will Nintendo finally make it happen? Multiple totally anonymous sources say yes: they told Game Informer, IGN and Kotaku that just such a system will debut at E3 2011 in June, possibly with a teaser of some sort next month. While the ninja moles didn’t provide many hard details — mostly just the typical iffy claim that the system will wipe the floor with competitors in terms of speeds and feeds — they told IGN that it will support 1080p resolutions and be backwards-compatible with games for the Wii. Naturally, we’ll believe it when we see it… so here’s hoping we see it fairly quickly.

Rumor: Nintendo Wii Getting a Price Cut to $150

Red Nintendo Wii

According to a “trusted source” at Engadget, the Nintendo Wii has been around long enough to earn itself a break at the checkout counter.
If you haven’t picked one up yet, or if you bought one, got bored with it, sold it, and are now interested in getting another one because you’re really looking forward to Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, it’s possible that one may be in your future for $150 retail instead of the current $199.
Nintendo hasn’t weighed in on the matter yet, but some are expecting the cut to come as soon as mid-May, while others point out that the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June would be a more appropriate place for Nintendo to make such an announcement.
Regardless, nothing has been confirmed yet, but if it’s true it could mean a bright summer for Nintendo, not to mention lower prices across the board if other manufacturers choose to respond in kind.

Nintendo cutting Wii price to $150 on May 15th?

Nintendo’s miniature white monolith has sold like gangbusters for long enough that we’re wary it’ll ever get cheap, but a trusted source tells us a price cut is indeed headed our way — and that the Nintendo Wii will cost just $150 starting May 15th. The timing would make some sense, given how Nintendo’s profits have tanked for a while due to flagging hardware sales, and just last month Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime hinted that the Wii’s price might be a potential variable to change that in an interview with Gamasutra. Still, we’re not fully convinced that Nintendo would announce a price cut then, rather than, say, at the Electronics Entertainment Expo in June, and it’s not like the company to let this sort of announcement leak out. Still, if you find a shiny new copy of Mario Kart Wii in a $150 console bundle this time next month, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Halo 3 Pushes Xbox Sales to the Top!

This article was written on October 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

halo 3 console When Halo 3 broke the record in the video game industry by selling over 1 million pre-orders, we knew September was going to be a huge month for Microsoft. Not only did they sell millions of dollars worth of Halo 3 games, they also sold millions of dollars worth of Xbox 360 consoles.  The official numbers that detail how many Xbox 360 consoles actually sold won’t be released until Thursday (October 18th), but we’ve got a pretty good idea at just how great of a month it was thanks to Wedbush Morgan Analyst, Michael Pachter.

According to Pachter, Halo 3 helped sell 450,000 Xbox 360s in the month of September. The number he’s given means that the Xbox 360 outsold the Wii by 25,000 units. That doesn’t mean that the coming months will be all downhill for Microsoft though. Pachter went on to say “Although we think that sales of Halo 3 accounted for virtually all of the growth during the month, we think that the game drove hardware sales and positions the industry for even greater sales in November and December, when many Halo players will be ready for a new challenge.  We are optimistic about software sales through the end of the year.”

Here’s the breakdown of the predicted sales for the month of September:

  1. Xbox 360 – 450,000 units
  2. DS – 430,000 units
  3. Wii – 425,000 units
  4. PSP – 252,000 units
  5. PS2 – 222,000 units
  6. PS3 – 150,000 units
  7. GBA – 65,000 units

Another factor that probably helped the Xbox take the #1 spot is that conveniently timed price cut. Back in early August Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox 360 console by 50 dollars.  Considering Halo 3 costs a little over $50 for the standard edition, consumers were able to get the console plus the game for what the system originally cost. Not a bad deal!

In general, software sales are expected to reach $655 million this year which is 47% higher than in 2006.  With both the PS3 and the Wii launched late last year, it’s no surprise that 2007 will have been so successful. Pachter also predicts that a PS2 price cut is possible before the end of the year, and his guess is that it will be priced at $99! If that’s true, I imagine we’ll see software sales increase even further thanks to those who just can’t pass up a good deal on a console!

Liquid-cooled Wii takes console mods to a ridiculous extreme

There are console mods and there are console mods… and then there’s this — a completely custom Nintendo Wii built from steel and cooled by two liquid-filled containers that would look more at home in a mad scientist’s laboratory. Not surprisingly, this mod took a long time to complete. Bit-tech forum member Angel OD began the so-called “UNLimited Edition” project way back in December, 2009 and, after a few diversions, finally finished it this past weekend. Be sure to hit up the links below for a look at the complete build process, and a few more shots of the finished product.

Blaze’s U-Move controls your Wii, makes you jog to play effectively (video)

Now that your Wii Balance Board is safely tucked underneath the couch and you’ve long ago discovered that every standard Nintendo title can be played with the flick of a wrist, you might be wondering how you’ll ever convince yourself to exercise again. Well, there are certainly a few dangling-carrot solutions to your problem, and here’s one that actually makes sense — the Blaze U-Move, a Nunchuk replacement (with built-in pedometer) that effectively locks your joystick in place. The idea is that unless you’re moving, your avatar can’t move, and when you do, it can — each time you jog in place, you’re building up virtual momentum. That certainly sounds like a much more graceful and practical solution than others we’ve seen, which turn off the entire controller or (Miyamoto forbid) cut power to your entire game machine. This way, you can stop running when you need to do some precision aiming, and set your mind at ease regarding your save game. Yours for £20, or about $32 in US currency.

Wii Fit Launches in U.S. T-Minus 2 Days

This article was written on May 19, 2008 by CyberNet.

In just two days on Wednesday May 21st, the highly anticipated Wii Fit, an exercise game for Nintendo’s Wii will launch in the U.S. Looking over the ads that came in Sunday’s newspaper, you can just tell that this is going to be a big title for Nintendo. Best Buy dedicated the whole back page of their ad to the game which will be sold with the Balance Board peripheral for $89.99.

wii fit.png

The game has already been released in Japan, Australia and the UK and has been extremely successful in those locations. That success is expected to continue in the United States and several locations who were accepting pre-order sales of the game are sold-out. One such example is Amazon.com who displays a message saying that Wii Fit is temporarily out-of-stock because the game is in “great demand.”

With over 40 different types of activities falling into four different categories including yoga poses, muscle workouts, aerobic exercise and balance games, this is one game that is sure to get people moving, assuming that they can get their hands on a copy of it. Hopefully this game doesn’t end-up being as difficult to get as the Wii console itself has been.

Anybody pre-order Wii Fit or intend to head out to the store on Wednesday morning to get the game?
