Google Ditching Gears for HTML5
The Google Gears blog announced that they are not only discontinuing support for Safari, but they will also not be adding any new features to Gears going forward. They will continue to support Firefox and IE for now, but their main focus is on using technologies like HTML5 to provide the same experiences that Google Gears offers but without the additional software.
The Windows Browser Ballot Screen
Starting this week Microsoft, in an attempt to appease the European Commission, will be rolling out a “browser ballot” screen to European Windows users. The rollout will be pushed through Windows Update to anyone that has IE set as their default browser, and will present you with various different browsers you can pick from including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Please note that this is not just a Windows 7 thing. Windows XP and Vista users will also be presented with the ballot screen upon installation of the update.

The Command & Conquer series of computer games have always been entertaining to me, and I tend to purchase new ones as they are released. While we’re waiting for new games, however, there’s nothing like reminiscing with some of the classics including Tiberian Sun, Tiberian Dawn, and Red Alert. To my amazement EA has been kind enough to post those games online, and are available for free via download. Ahh the memories.

When I first saw TinyPad it helped revive some of that simplicity by not having a dozen different menus with hundreds of different options you can choose from. At the same time TinyPad throws in some nice text formatting options to put it more on par with WordPad, and can even sync with an online service to make sharing your notes incredibly easy. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a text fiend.
