Another year, another Imagine Cup. The annual competition, sponsored by Microsoft, gives students the opportunity to apply technology to tackle hunger, poverty, and other global problems, thereby making the world a better place (for you and for me, and the entire human race). We’d say the finalists deserve a pretty cool reward for their efforts, right? According to a status update on the Cup’s Twitter account — an update that’s conspicuously been pulled — one of the prizes for finalists is a Windows Phone with Mango pre-loaded, a jackpot they’d receive by September. We’re not completely certain if this will be a pre-release version intended for developers or if it’s an indication that the final iteration will be ready for public use by this time; we’ve only heard that Mango’s slotted for a fall release, so both are definite possibilities. Since many of these students are developers, however, it’s entirely possible they’ll receive a prototype device with an early version of the firmware. No phone could replace the warm feelings in their heart for such a great accomplishment, but at least they can share their joy with built-in Twitter integration.

With the dust from its Microsoft partnership having somewhat settled, Nokia is reportedly looking to kick off its forthcoming line of Windows Phones with a major marketing campaign. According to Marketing Magazine, Elop & Co. have already devoted some £80 million (about $127 million) to the six-month ad endeavor, which is expected to launch in October. Considering all the job cuts and downwardly revised corporate forecasts, an advertising refresh would seem like a logical way for Nokia to embark on a new era. But the company is remaining rather mum on the subject, saying, “We are excited about the Nokia with Windows phone, but it’s not our policy to comment on specific campaigns for unannounced products.” Awkwardly executed “leaks,” on the other hand, are an entirely different matter.

HP caught the industry by surprise yesterday, announcing some serious executive reshuffling, with Stephen DeWitt, the company’s former head of Personal Systems Group Americas stepping up to fill in the lead role at HP’s webOS global business unit, while Jon Rubinstein will be in charge of PSG globally. This game of executive musical chairs raised a lot of questions with regards to the state of the company’s beloved but arguably underperforming mobile operating system, particularly in the wake of the TouchPad’s lukewarm reception amongst reviewers, ourselves included.

We managed to grab some time with DeWitt, in spite of what’s sure to be a fairly packed schedule at the moment, discussing the impact of the TouchPad’s reviews, the present and future of webOS, and what smartphone he carries around in his pocket.

Windows Vista 5365 is going to be the build that beta testers are going to receive on Monday around 1:00 PM EST. A few days ago build 5361 images were leaked to the Internet and struck some as interesting when they saw that Internet Explorer was labeled as version “7+”. We still don’t know exactly what that means because there are no noticeable changes, other than the new color of the tab bar (as pictured above).

The new release of Vista is going to have some nice updates to it:

1. Sidebar Fixes/More Gadgets
2. Improved Driver Support
3. Welcome Center Changed (Updated)
4. Several Bug Fixes
5. Improved Install (Faster etc..)

It is normally less than a few hours before someone has posted a Torrent for a CTP release along with a working key. However, the activation has been a struggle to get around in previous releases and may continue to be a struggle.

This build, 5365, will probably take us up to the May CTP which will also be known as Beta 2 and RC0. The original Beta 2 was supposed to be released back in January 2006 but got pushed back when the CTP releases were becoming so successful. Eventually, the final release of Windows Vista also got pushed back and is now targeted for January 2007.
