Ubiquitous iRemoTap puts your powerstrip in the cloud, turns lights off remotely (video)

It probably won’t help you if you leave your oven on, but if you let lights linger after leaving home, Ubiquitous’ iRemotTap may help you save a few Kilowatts. This seemingly vanilla powerstip is anything but, boasting the odd addition of a tiny OS embedded in a wireless LAN chip — all the better to turn your lights off. Users can control the internet-enabled socket stick remotely via a mobile or desktop web browser, allowing them to switch off gadgets and lights after leaving the house. Can’t be bothered to log in to switch off? No worries, this plug powers devices down automatically after they reach a pre-defined power consumption limit. If you’re forgetful enough to need a light switch in the cloud, Ubiquitous is hoping to sell you peace of mind for less than ¥10,000 ($122) — whenever these taps get out of R&D, that is. Hyperkin’s PS3 Remotext weds Blu-ray remote with keypad controller, DualShock 3 frets

With the PSN finally back up, it’s time for important things — you know, messaging your buds for a Black Ops pwning spree or hitting up Netflix. Hyperkin’s Remotext for PS3 wants to help you get back into action with its hybrid remote / controller / chatpad. It features a slide-out Blu-ray remote panel, QWERTY keypad — better positioned than SONY’s offering — and two analog nubs with a near-complete set of gaming controls. There’s no sign of rear triggers, and Bluetooth connectivity is absent too, but it does come with a wireless USB receiver and rechargeable battery so you’re not left scrounging between the couch cushions for AAs. Although we’re doubtful it’ll prove functional for gaming, it could be appropriate for PS3s that spend more time sitting at the movies than getting their Move on. The DualShock 3 shouldn’t have much to worry about, but we’ll find out at E3, when the Remotext will be officially showcased. There’s no word on pricing or availability yet, but if you’re dying for more in the meantime, a press release is beyond the break.

Verizon adds 4G LTE to nine more cities, expands coverage in Chicago, Philadelphia


Verizon Wireless customers will be able to jet on to the LTE network in nine new cities, taking advantage of lightening-fast speeds on their HTC Thunderbolts and 4G mobile hotspots. The expansion includes Mobile and Montgomery (AL); Greater Fairfield and New Haven (CT); Gainesville, Pensacola, and Tallahassee (FL); Fayetteville-Lumberton (NC); and Bryan-College Station and Temple-Killeen (TX). We also have access in Albany, though VZW has yet to confirm launching LTE in New York’s capital city. The carrier has also expanded coverage in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, and Philadelphia, so if you haven’t been able to connect in the past, dust off that enable-4G button and give it another shot. This week’s additions bring the list of LTE cities to 55, so we’re just over the 35 percent mark towards the carrier’s goal of 147 cities by year’s end.

NXP and Cohda teach cars to communicate with 802.11p, hopes to commercialize tech by 2014

Ford promised to give our cars X-ray vision, and this little blue box might be the key — it’s apparently the first standardized hardware platform for peer-to-peer automobile communications. Called C2X (for “car-to-x”), the module inside is the product of Cohda Wireless and near-field communications gurus at NXP, and it uses 802.11p WiFi to let equipped cars see one another around blind corners, through other vehicles, or even chat with traffic signals up to a mile away. Pocket-lint got a look at the technology during Automotive Week, and got a good idea of when we can expect the tech; NXP says it should begin rolling out in 2014, and hopes to have 10 percent of the cars on the road gleefully gabbing by 2020.

Samsung Droid Charge gets minor update to Media Hub, Verizon extends free Thunderbolt hotspot offer

Wondering why your barely-out-of-the-box Droid Charge is already getting a software update? Wonder no more, as it’s merely a tweak for Samsung’s Media Hub application that disables downloads over 3G. It’s kind of a shame, really, as that means if you don’t live in an LTE market you’ll need to be tied to a WiFi hotspot to get your multimedia there, but Verizon claims it’s a compromise to “ensure quality and speed.”

Meanwhile, Verizon’s other LTE handset is getting an additional boon — the carrier’s extending its free wireless hotspot offer through June 15th for the HTC Thunderbolt, after which you can expect to pay $20 a month for the WiFi tethering privilege. Enjoy it while it lasts, folks.

FCC reveals Seagate GoFlex Satellite, a WiFi-capable battery-powered external hard drive

For a purportedly doomed manufacturer of magnetic storage, Seagate sure is spinning some interesting ideas these days — last year, we got modular, upgradable cables, and now the company’s testing external hard drives that don’t need pesky wires to function. According to filings, the Seagate GoFlex Satellite not only plays the network-attached-storage card with built-in 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, it’s also got a 3.7V battery inside its case… making the product’s name somewhat apt, don’t you think? According to a leaked description, Seagate’s also planning a companion iOS app called “GoFlex Media” to let your iDevices stream content directly from the device. Mind you, none of that means you won’t be able to dock with your Satellite the old-fashioned way — FCC docs also mention a USB 3.0 cable that delivers data and power simultaneously.

HTC Thunderbolt inductive charging back hits FCC, makes life with LTE a little easier

HTC Thunderbold inductive charging backThat inductive-charging backplate for the HTC Thunderbolt just hit the FCC, which means keeping the battery-devouring device juiced is about to get a little less inconvenient. Instead of having to plug in three times a day just to keep that LTE radio happy you’ll simply be able to rest it on a charging mat… three times a day. The part made a brief appearance in the Verizon shop for $39, but the rumored April release date came and went without so much as a peep from Big Red. While we still can’t say for sure when it will land, at least we know it’s coming sooner rather than later — and we’ve got one less reason to reconsider that pocket-busting extended battery.

Chromebooks get 3G connectivity via Three UK (update)

Long before Google outed Samsung’s Series 5 and Acer’s Chromebook, we’d already heard that Verizon would provide unlimited 3G coverage to the Internet giant’s netbooks, but our friends across the Atlantic still didn’t have a data carrier until yesterday. We don’t have a lot in the way of details for now, but Three UK has stepped forward as the Chromebooks’ carrier of choice for 3G data in the United Kingdom. The company is decidedly tight-lipped otherwise, but says they’ll have more details in the “next few weeks.”

Update: Well, it looks like Three has already let the cat out of the bag on this one. According to the UK’s Chrome OS site, British Chromebook users will receive a free SIM card, offering 3GB of 3G coverage for three months — see what they did there? After that, users can choose to go contract-free with a number of different pay-as-you-go plans that range from a 500MB day pass for £3 to a 7GB one-month pass for £25. Spotify Now on iPod Classic, Wirelessly Syncs to iPhone

Spotify will now sync local music to your iPhone over Wi-Fi, embarrassing Apple in its own home

Music streaming service Spotify has updated both its desktop and mobile software to pretty much let you ditch iTunes entirely. The new desktop client will now detect any iPod you have plugged into your computer and let you sync your local tracks with it. This works with not just the iPhone and iPod Touch, but also the iPods Nano, Classic and Shuffle.

This doesn’t let you stream music from the internet to these devices, obviously. Instead, you are using Spotify to replace iTunes as music syncing software. And as Spotify will already import and play local files, it should work seamlessly.

You will also be able to sync tracks that you have bought in Spotify. Music sales is a little known feature of the service, and one the company is pushing with this update with the ability to purchase an entire playlist with one click. Users of the free service, who previously couldn’t use the iOS versions of Spotify (this is an option only for €10-per-month premium subscribers), can now use iPhone Spotify — but only to sync local and purchased music.

IOS and Android users, whether free or premium, also get a rather nifty new feature: Wireless syncing. With the soon-to-be-released update, you can wirelessly sync music from your computer to your phone (or iPod Touch). This is something iTunes should have done years ago. Previously, Spotify tried to let its iOS app play music from the iPod library on the iPhone, but the addition of multitasking in iOS 4 broke this and it had to be pulled.

These updates are rolling out in Spotify-friendly countries over the next few days. In other news, the iPad version of Spotify was recently sighted being used by Bigfoot and/or the Loch Ness Monster.

Self-Powering, Wireless Energy Sensors Join the Internet

Humans are inherently inefficient creatures. We leave lights on needlessly, keep the home thermostat cranked up with the windows open, forget to turn off our televisions when we leave the house.

And despite the advances in computing power over the past few decades, our buildings aren’t doing anything to make up for our inefficiencies.

“Most buildings today are dumb,” says EnOcean Chairman Graham Martin, “meaning they completely lack automation systems to manage energy use.”

EnOcean wants to change that. The company created a self-powered, energy-harvesting sensor, which which can be found inside of the inexpensive, easy-to-install light switches and thermostats EnOcean manufactures.

Now those sensors are able to communicate via TCP/IP networks, which means that when installed, the energy use of any web-connected building can be managed from another web-connected device.

EnOcean’s sensors are the latest in a wave of increasingly connected and intelligent objects that some people have termed “the internet of things.” British microprocessor giant Arm Holdings, for example, has bolstered this development with its mbed project, which gives engineers a cheap toolkit to work on a microcontroller, and the encouragement to come up with novel ways to connect them to other (often unconventional) objects. Other companies, like EnOcean and semiconductor maker Atheros, are focused on developing low-cost, low-consumption devices that can operate on wireless networks.

Pressing an EnOcean switch to turn a light on generates enough energy to send out a wireless signal, which enables communication between the switch and a wireless receiver up to nearly 100 feet away. Until recently, EnOcean sensors were only communicating amongst themselves and a specific wireless receiver within range. Now, with TCP/IP enabled communication, any computer hooked up to the internet can communicate with the sensors.

These sensors are cheap and easy enough to install that EnOcean foresees a wide market for them. Current industrial automation systems can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to install, not to mention the need to rip open walls for installing hardwired energy management sensors.

EnOcean’s sensors eliminate those costs. At approximately $50 to $100 a pop (depending on the type of measurement needed), EnOcean’s switches are peel-and-stick; there’s no need for messy construction crews to tear down your drywall. Instead of batteries, the sensors capture energy from their surroundings using a combination of solar cells, thermal and linear motion converters. That means they’re completely self-powering.

With the flick of a switch, for instance, the Eco 100 linear motion harvester converts the movement of an internal spring into a small amount of usable energy (around five volts). This is enough to transmit the wireless signal without the need for a separate battery to power the operation. No muss, no fuss.

The sensors have already been installed in over 100,000 buildings already, consisting mostly of retail establishments and commercial buildings. But EnOcean has its sights set on wider, more mainstream applications, such as college dorms, hospitals or your house.

Installing them is easier than you may think. After hooking up a gateway device — which looks and works much like your everyday router — EnOcean sensors use internet protocol-based communication to relay temperature settings and energy use to the server. You can access that info via a widget from any internet-connected desktop or laptop, whether you’re at home or not.

And yes, there’s an app for that. Android, iPhone and BlackBerry users can install remote access apps like VenergyUI or Can2Go, which let you monitor and control your home energy usage from your smartphone.

Of course, it’s a cost-efficiency thing for larger enterprises. “Where we’re seeing the most savings are the buildings where people don’t pay for the energy themselves,” Martin said. “Hospitals, hotel rooms — there’s no incentive to turn off the heater when you aren’t paying for it in your bill.”

Realistically, you probably won’t be saving wads of cash by installing one in your own home. It’s an idea that appeals to scalable business models and larger operations.

Still, any idea that lets you crank up the heat in your place before you get home at night, all through the use of your smartphone, is okay in our book.
