This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: An Angry Birds Cake, Long Stabby Things, and More

Angry Cake Birds

Some of this week’s best YouTube videos featured children doing things that many adults wish they could do: in one case, it’s a little girl being honest about wanting a career before she gets married, in another case it’s a little girl singing a Lady Gaga tune better than Lady Gaga (in my opinion, anyway.) Who says kids don’t have talent?
Also this week: an Angry Birds cake – and not just any Angry Birds cake, a playable Angry Birds cake. You know, just in case you want to smash some pigs before the wedding ceremony. Some aussie newscasters discuss the best home defense techniques, and more.

YouTube says it’s in talks to stream NHL, NBA games, NHL says it isn’t

Currently, sports is one of the main things that’s tough to stay connected to if you choose not to subscribe to traditional linear pay-TV service like cable or satellite, so it’s no surprise there was much ado over Gautam Anand, Google Director of Content Partnerships for Asia Pacific, saying the company is negotiating to broadcast NHL and NBA games on YouTube. However, the key words in Bloomberg’s report of the statement are “for Asia Pacific,” and while the NHL flat out denied any discussions, the NBA merely noted it was “pleased that YouTube recognizes the value of live sports.” YouTube already airs games from the Indian Cricket Premier League, and PaidContent’s Staci Kramer has learned talks centered around the possibility of airing NBA games — but only in Asia. It’s doubtful, if not ludicrous, to think TNT or ABC/ESPN would let hoop games escape from cable to the internet like free agents to South Beach and while leagues could see potential in new international broadcast models, don’t expect to see things changing in the US anytime soon.

For Good or Bad, the Top Brands on YouTube…

This article was written on May 09, 2008 by CyberNet.

YouTube isn’t just a place for the homemade videos of your last surprise birthday party. It has become a place where individuals, companies, presidential candidates, musicians, and others, are able to share a piece of themselves with others. Not only are a variety of people represented on YouTube, but different brands are represented as well. Recently Custom Communication Ltd out of the UK who specializes in social media, put together a list of some of the top brands on YouTube.

It would be one thing if these brands purposely created videos for distribution on YouTube to enhance and strengthen their brand (some do), but what has happened is that some brands are often represented on YouTube after a 3rd party created a video, and it’s not always in a positive way. To make it even “worse,” many of these videos become extremely popular. Whether these videos affect the brands in a positive or negative way, we’re not sure, but here is the list of the top 10 brands on YouTube based on the number of views each video has received.

Below you’ll find a “YouTube viewer” to make it easy to switch between the videos, but it only works if you have JavaScript enabled. Here are the top 10 brands on YouTube, for good or for bad…

  1. Nike – ” Ronaldinho: Touch of Gold” – viewed 22,838,929 times
  2. Pepsi –PEPSI (Britney Spears, Beyonce, Pink – We Will Rock You)” – viewed 14,491,813 times
  3. McDonalds –Fast Food Freestyle” – viewed 11,822602 times
  4. Coca-Cola –Diet Coke + Mentos = Human experiment” – viewed 8,651,351 times
  5. Unilever –Dove Evolution” – viewed 6,806,502 times
  6. Disney –Internet is for Porn (requires adult verification by YouTube)” – viewed 3,308,799 times
  7. Budweiser – “Banned Super Bowl 2007 Bud Commercial” – viewed 2,204,028 times
  8. Microsoft – “Microsoft Surface Parody” – viewed 2,098,435 times

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: Minecarts, Proposals, Mario Kart, and Inappropriate Staring

Real Life Mario Kart

Last weekend was Valentine’s Day, which guarantees that at least one of this week’s best and most popular videos was a marriage proposal. What you might not know is that the marriage proposal that got the most attention was inside a video game. Don’t worry, she said yes.
Also among the best this week – more than one crew armed with video cameras decided to take their dreams of playing Nintendo’s Mario Kart out of the video games and into real life, both with hilarious results. Also, a completely tasteful expose of exactly how many men star at an attractive woman as she passes. Way to be smooth, guys – you’re totally busted.

Google Social Search update makes your friends more relevant, difficult to ignore

Google’s been talking up its Social Search function for sometime, but up until now your friends’ tweets probably haven’t made it to the top of your search results — unless of course you’re besties with TMZ, and you’ve been searching the Miley Cyrus bong salvia rip again. Thankfully, it looks as if that could change with El Goog’s latest update to the socially minded search function, which now mixes updates from your contacts’ various online accounts, like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, in with the standard search fare — pulling them up from their previous position at the bottom of your results. Google’s also included a photo and annotation to show the origins of relevant links, and given you the ability to manage how you connect your accounts — either publicly through your profile or privately through your account. The new functions started rolling out yesterday, which means you could be seeing a whole lot more from those contacts you regretted friending in the first place. Isn’t social media a wonderful / disastrous thing?

YouTube Private Videos Available to Everyone

This article was written on August 23, 2007 by CyberNet.

YouTube Private VideoGoogle has had its fair share of privacy issues, and I don’t think there could be a better time to recap their past incidents. So here is a quick list of the things that have happened in the past related to Google’s privacy (oldest first):

  1. Picasa’s private albums available to the public
  2. Blogger feeds available for private blogs
  3. Gmail flaw shows anyone your contact list
  4. Google Street View had some interesting images, and getting yourself removed from there was a pain
  5. Google Docs doesn’t make your images private

And now there is a new one to chalk up on the list: private YouTube videos can be downloaded by anyone. I guess their help section doesn’t tell the whole truth:

When you make a video private, you have the option of sharing it with a select number of people from any of the lists you’ve created (you have two default lists, "Friends" and "Family"). If you don’t select a list, your private video can only be viewed by your account. If you share it with members on a list, it will only be viewable by those select members on that list.

So how can you get your hands on a private video? All you need is the ID of the YouTube video, and then you paste it onto the end of this URL:

cache.googlevideo.com/get_video?video_id=

Using this private video as an example, here is what the URL would look like:

cache.googlevideo.com/get_video?video_id=lyOBg3w5vHc

That URL will prompt you to download the video in FLV format, which can easily be played from your own computer. I know that manually entering in that URL can be a pain, so I’ve put together a bookmarklet that will prompt you for the ID of the YouTube video. After it’s entered in the download will immediately begin. To use the bookmarklet just right click on this link and bookmark it:

Private YouTube

Google’s security woes continue to haunt them, but I hope they continue to get better as time goes on. Is it that they’re rushing products out the door without testing them thoroughly?

Find Removed YouTube Videos/Download your Favorites

This article was written on March 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

If you frequent YouTube, at some point you’ll probably go to watch your favorite video only to find that it’s been removed. Videos can be removed for a variety of reasons, like YouTube removing them because of a copyright issue, or even owners removing their clips.

By using Delutube, you still have a chance of getting those deleted clips back.  Think of it as a Google Cache for your Videos.  Google Cache can pull up a webpage that’s no longer available, and then you can go view it as a cached version. Delutube will work if the video hasn’t been permanently deleted from the servers.

Delutube

All you have to do is find the video ID that’s found at the end of the URL, go to Delutube and enter in that ID, and if it hasn’t been permanently deleted, you’ve hit a jackpot!

KissyoutubeAnother service out there called Kiss YouTube provides an easy way to download all of your favorite videos.  All you have to do is enter in the word “kiss” right before YouTube in the URL so it would look something like http://www.kissyoutube.com/watch?v=nsjuPX8C2lo.

After pressing enter, you’ll be taken to the Kiss YouTube page where you’ll have the option to “download now” in flv format, or send to your friends. They also provide a download link for the video in case you want to post to a forum, blog, IM, etc.

Because they’re using the same logo as YouTube, they might run into some issues. But for now, it’s one of the simplest ways I know of for downloading your favorites. Just type “kiss.”

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: The Wrath of Khan, A Floppy Disk Concerto, Ninjas, and More

Enter The Ninja

If you ask most people which Star Trek movie is their favorite, they’d probably laugh at you and call you a nerd. If you ask Star Trek fans which movie is their favorite, most of them I’ll bet would tell you it’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It’s so popular that scenes from it are mainstay in pop culture, and if you haven’t seen it, this week you will: in 60 seconds. Don’t worry, it’s enough.
Also in the roundup this week, a floppy disk does Toccata and Fugue (and a number of you ponder “What’s a floppy disk,”) a helmet that shaves your head for you and doesn’t demand a tip, an all-too-short Superman cartoon done in the classic style, and, of course, ninjas.
