MSI Debuts Hybrid Netbook

MSI%20U115%20Hybrid.JPGMSI announced its U115 “hybrid” netbook on Tuesday. What’s a hybrid netbook? One with the ability to use both a solid-state disc drive as well as a spinning hard drive, apparently.

MSI didn’t release a price or a ship date for the U115 netbook, which includes a 10-inch display and is designed around Intel’s 1.6-GHz Z530 Atom processor and its “Menlow” chipset platform. Other specs include the usual 1 Gbyte of RAM, 802.11b/g/n wireless, Bluetooth EDR, a few USB ports, either a 1.3-Mpixel or 2.0-Mpixel Webcam, and 4-in-1 card reader. MSI didn’t draw any overt comparisons to the MSI Wind, the company’s more famous netbook offering.

The real innovation, at least according to MSI, is the 8- or optional 16-Gbyte SSD working in conjunction with the 120-Gbyte or optional 160-Gbyte rotating hard drive.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Beta Available For Download

Photoshop CS3

It seems like only yesterday that Adobe released Photoshop CS2 but I guess time flies when you’re having fun, as everyone likes to say. The release day for Photoshop CS3 is in the near future but before we can get to it there needs to be some testing. Starting today owners of Photoshop CS2 can download and install the latest Photoshop CS3.

So are you ready for the catch now? You need to have a valid Adobe serial number (for one of several products listed below) in order to use Photoshop CS3. Here is a quote from the download page about how it works:

A licensed copy of Photoshop CS2, Creative Suite 2, Production Studio, Adobe Web Bundle, or Adobe Video Bundle is required to use this technology beyond a two-day trial period. After installation you will be prompted to enter a CS3 beta serial number for Photoshop. To obtain a beta serial number, visit www.adobe.com/go/photoshopcs3beta_serialnumber and enter your CS2 serial number. Although the beta is available only in English, all language versions of Photoshop and the products mentioned above qualify to participate.

That is a little disappointing because I thought it would be an open Beta and reading through this review makes it sounds really sweet. The new quick selection tool looks to be greatly improved so that it is no longer a pain to get Photoshop to select the area that you want it to. That is one thing that both experienced and non-experienced Photoshop users will appreciate.

The overall screenshot of Photoshop CS3 that was provided makes it look like they changed the layout of the application itself. I’m not sure if that’s because it was done on a Mac (which I haven’t used Photoshop on) or if it looks similar for Windows users. Either way this application sounds like a nice upgrade for Photoshop users.

Wireless keyboard / controller / remote control for PS3 could make your day / week / month

We’ve seen some goofy looking PS3 accessories — including Sony’s recent Wireless Keypad for the PS3 — but this one looks like a little bit of crazy mixed with a dab of mediocrity. A product of unknown make, the creatively dubbed “PS3 3-in-1 Wireless keyboard controller remote” certainly looks like it could function in a mind-blowingly awesome fashion — though we haven’t yet gotten our hands on an actual unit yet, so we can’t say for sure. It’s available now for an inviting

Steve Jobs’ Health Declining Rapidly, Reason for Macworld Cancellation

According to a previously reliable source, Apple misrepresented the reasons behind Macworld and Jobs’ keynote cancellation. Allegedly, the real cause is his rapidly declining health. In fact, it may be even worse than we imagined:

Steves health is rapidly declining. Apple is choosing to remove the hype factor strategically vs letting the hype destroy apple when the inevitable news comes later this spring.

This strategic loss will be less of a bang with investors. This is why Macworld is a no-go anymore. No more Steve means no more hype. Saying they are no longer needing [Macworld] is the cover designed by the worldwide “loyalty” department.

This source has repeatedly been 100% correct before. Those times, however, were always related to news and images of unreleased Apple products. I can only hope that, in this more personal matter, it is absolutely wrong. And that if he is not, that sentence just means that Steve Jobs is retiring according to his plan.

While Steve Jobs’ health is nobody’s business—not the press, not investors, not the public—we believe that there’s a line between saying “no-comment” and plainly misleading—once again—the public.

Steve Jobs have been giving Macworld Expo keynotes since he came back as interim CEO of the company in 1997. Since then he has never failed once, always introducing notable products both at Macworld San Francisco and Macworld New York. During his latest Macworld keynote, in 2008, he introduced the MacBook Air. Later this year, he used his WWDC presentation to announce the new iPhone 3G. In his last two show-n-tells, for the new iPods and the new MacBooks, he used less time on stage, giving more limelight to key members of Apple’s executive team.

According to our Deep Throat’s report, the fact seems to be that whether or not Apple had other reasons to pull out of Macworld, they weren’t the only ones, and they certainly weren’t the same ones used for not putting Steve Jobs through the ordeal of a two-hour presentation.

Apple did not comment on this story after being contacted.

Windows 7 beta tested, photo’d, deemed ‘massive improvement’ over Vista

Yes, Virginia, there’s a leaked copy of Windows 7 beta floating around, and if you aren’t the type to “break the law” and check it out yourself, the folks at Tech Cast News have made for you a picture-laden walkthrough of the installation process and some of the OS’s new features, including Alt+Tab doppelganger Aero Peek, the icon-only Taskbar interface, and the Smart Folder-esque Libraries. Overall, they found the beta a major improvement over Vista and predict the final release will put Microsoft in consumers’ good graces again. Here’s hoping that apparent January beta release comes to fruition so we can sweep that other OS under the rug a little bit faster.

Update: Looks like Tech Cast News is down, standby for innovative Ballmer-based conspiracy theories.

Update 2: … and it’s back!

LGs Connected Blu-ray Players Add CinemaNow, YouTube

LG%20BD%20300.JPGLG Electronics said Tuesday that its 2009 lineup of networked Blu-ray players will include video streaming features from CinemaNow and YouTube, as well as with its existing content partner, Netflix.

All three options will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Shw (CES) next week, where LG will debut its 2009 products. LG’s timing is exquisite, given that analysts said Tuesday that interest in connected devices is on the rise.

LG launched its Netflix-connected Blu-ray player, the LG BD300(shown left), in July. “Future LG Network Blu-ray Disc Players will also offer consumers a variety of ways to enjoy more than 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes from Netflix,” LG added.

HP Firebird gaming towers with VoodooDNA to start at $1,799

It’d be a gross understatement to say that we weren’t remarkably excited about the HP Firebird 803 when we caught wind of it last week, but now you can safely say that our emotions have settled down after hearing the price. Granted, the $1,799 starting figure for the Firebird 802 isn’t totally unexpected — after all, the Blackbird 002 went for upwards of three large — but we still see the sticker as a touch high given the weaker innards and the lack of upgrade options. Those of you who vehemently disagree can certainly hand over your wallet starting on January 9th, or you can wait for the boxes to hit unnamed retail outlets in February.

It will soon be time for a third-generation Audi A8, and early reports are that the automaker will push a bolder, stronger styling theme with the next version, according to Car and Driver. The A8 has always been a rolling technology bed, right down to its all-aluminum body shell and aluminum space frame; this time around, the company plans to announce it with the styling.
