Garmin-Asus Nuvifone M20: A Surprisingly Cute WinMo 6.1 GPS Phone

Garmin-Asus will launch the M20, a Windows Mobile 6.1 phone, sometime this year. True to the name, this cute touchscreen handset comes with car dock and a full set of GPS maps for deep-country use.

As we mentioned last week, this never-before-seen handset will actually be the second Nuvifone to hit the market, after the G60 that Garmin was showing off as early as January of last year. The M20 is Garmin-Asus’ first venture into Windows Mobile, and is presumed to be followed, eventually, by an Android phone.

In the phone department, the M20 hits the necessary specs: It’s a GSM-based phone with HSDPA data capability, along with both wi-fi and Bluetooth. As a WinMo phone, it’s got the email people like and the browser they don’t (sorry, but it’s true). Garmin-Asus has reskinned the home page a bit to make it more Garmin-like, with some quick access to the navigational options when it’s pivoted sideways, as you can see in the gallery. Only thing is, the touch-sensitive screen is just 2.8″, so it might not always be the best for quick-glance info.

The key to this is that the GPS isn’t going to crap out when there’s no phone service. In addition to the microSD slot, there’s between 4GB and 8GB of onboard memory, and in there is the gig of national map data and POIs that usually comes in a regular Nuvi navigator. This means if you’re out in the woods, unable to make a call, you can still navigate like a standalone portable GPS device. It also comes with a car dock and power cable, so you can really treat it like you would a standard Nuvi. Only it’s better: It’s got a 3-megapixel camera that automatically geotags every shot.

Pricing, availability and carrier details are not out yet, probably because Garmin-Asus is headed to Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress starting Monday to show this sucka off to the carriers. We’re assuming T-Mo and AT&T will both be interested, but as they’ve both got flagship badass phones already—and Garmin-Asus is also trying to push its original G60—it’s hard to guess how this will play out.

Here’s the presser:

Garmin-Asus Introduces nüvifone™ M20

BARCELONA, Spain/February 12, 2009/Business Wire – Garmin-Asus, a co-branded alliance between Garmin® Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (TAIEX: 2357), today announced the Garmin-Asus nüvifone M20, an all-in-one phone, mobile web-browser and premium navigation system with a Windows Mobile operating system. The Garmin-Asus nüvifone M20 will be on display at GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, February 16-19, 2009, at the Garmin-Asus exhibit (Hall 7, #7C37).

As the first Garmin-Asus nüvifone powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional with enterprise email, the sleek and colorful nüvifone M20 is designed for on-the-go professionals who want a fashionable and functional smartphone to manage their busy work and personal lives. This powerful device combines a dual-band 3.5G/tri-band GSM phone with Wi-Fi connectivity, desktop-like internet browser, push email, document viewing, multi-media capability, Bluetooth® and Garmin sat nav.

The nüvifone M20’s full QWERTY soft keyboard makes it easy to send and receive SMS, MMS and emails. The nüvifone M20 can also be synched with a computer so that contacts and emails are always available. HSDPA wireless connectivity and enterprise grade Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) ensure messages are sent and received quickly, including those with attachments.

Recognizing that location is relevant to every aspect of every day, the nüvifone M20 is designed with location based services (LBS) at its core and has the most advanced LBS experience of any Windows Mobile phone. Navigation functions are linked to frequently used applications such as calendar, contacts, email, internet applications and more, simplifying the nüvifone user’s day as they travel from one location to another.

The nüvifone M20 supports download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps and offers a desktop-style web browsing experience. Users can zoom and pan web pages with their finger as they view the information in either portrait or landscape orientation. In addition, they can easily navigate to an address on a web page with only a few taps of the screen.

The GPS features of the nüvifone M20 usher in a level of sophistication never seen before on a Windows Mobile smartphone. It has the navigation capability of a premium Garmin nüvi® sat nav, and comes with preloaded maps and points of interest (POIs) – hotels, restaurants, stores, fuel stations and more – for North America, Eastern and Western Europe, or other regions. Selecting a destination is straightforward and requires limited input from the user. For example, users can search for a destination by typing in the specific name or address of an establishment, search by category, or navigate to addresses in the nüvifone M20’s contact database or on the web. The device then gives turn-by-turn voice-prompted directions and automatically recalculates if a turn is missed along the way. In addition, the nüvifone includes quick access to online points of interest through internet enabled local search. The nüvifone harnesses the power of the worldwide web and information about local merchants and attractions is continually updated.

The nüvifone M20 takes GPS navigation one step further via Connected Services, a suite of online applications and data from Garmin-Asus that adds location intelligence to navigation, phone and browser functions. The expandable list of applications includes content like real-time traffic information, White Pages, weather, flight status, local events, and movie times.

The nüvifone product line also includes Ciao!™, a ground-breaking LBS application that helps users stay up to date on their friends’ whereabouts and status by linking numerous location-centric social networks. Through Ciao!, nüvifone users will see their friends’ location on a map and then be able to navigate to that location with ease. Nüvifone users can also choose to have the nüvifone automatically update their social network location information.

The nüvifone M20 has exceptional entertainment capabilities with the combination of a 2.8″ TFT touch lens display, built-in microphone and speakers, built-in 4Gb/8Gb My Storage, and ActiveSync® for Outlook®, Microsoft® Office, and multi-media synchronization. The VGA (640×480) display brings action to life when watching video or looking at photographs. The three megapixel camera automatically geotags images with the exact latitude and longitudinal coordinates. Users can then save the image on their phone, email it to a friend, or navigate to where the image was taken.

Garmin-Asus expects to announce the nüvifone M20’s pricing and availability information in the first half of 2009. Journalists should contact Garmin-Asus media representatives to arrange product demonstrations or interviews. Additional information about the nüvifone product line is available at www.GarminAsus.com.

AAXA pushes out P1 pint-sized pico projector

AAXA’s recently rolled out a rather cute lil pico projector — the P1 — which boasts enough features to make it stand out from the pack, even if only slightly (there are so many to choose from these days). This half-pounder measures 2.3-inches wide and 4.1-inches long, and boasts a VGA resolution with a 1000:1 contrast ratio, and 12 ANSI lumens o’ brightness — making it a bit on the weak side. It’s also got a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD slot, 1GB of internal storage and an on-board media player, with anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes of battery life. This puppy’s available now for around $289.

WrapUp: 3 Billion Photos Uploader to Flickr, Windows Media Player 12 Review, and More

This article was written on November 04, 2008 by CyberNet.

Welcome to the WrapUp by CyberNet. This is a collection of news stories, downloads, and tips that we have collected over the last few days, but never got around to writing about. Don’t forget to send in your own tips, or just leave a comment on this page if you think you’ve got something we should include.

flickr 3 billion.jpg3 Billion Photos Uploaded to Flickr
Flickr hit a big milestone yesterday as their counters rolled over the 3 billion photo mark. It’s remarkable that so many photos have been uploaded to their service, and I’m happy to have contributed nearly 7,000 myself. Here’s to the next billion! Congrats!

live mesh mac-1.jpgWindows Live Mesh for Mac
Microsoft has finally rolled out a version of Live Mesh for Mac users. You can now sync files not only between remote computers, but they can also be running different operating systems.

ubuntu 810.jpgUbuntu 8.10 Released
Ubuntu 8.10 was pushed out the door right on time last week. One of the more notable improvements in this release is full 3G support, which means you can take the Internet with you wherever you go (provided that you have some sort of 3G service).

aol logo.jpgAOL Criticizes Gmail for Stealing Ideas
The AOL Mail blog has assembled an article that bashes Gmail for all the ideas that Google stole from their own mail product. I guess AOL can’t accept the fact that there are now bigger and better tech companies than themselves.

dell laptop.jpg100,000 Notebook Batteries Recalled
Another 100,000 notebook batteries are being recalled from HP, Toshiba, and Dell. The batteries were manufactured by Sony, and a full list of affected models can be found at the link I provided. How come none of their own Vaio laptops are plagued with this battery issue?

windows taskforce.jpgMicrosoft Listening to Aero Taskforce Site
Long Zheng says that Microsoft is apparently listening to the Aero Taskforce site that he started a few months ago. The site aims to point out oddities and issues in the operating system, and some issues have been corrected for Windows 7. [related]

gmail logo.jpgSMS Text Messaging Coming to Gmail Chat
Google prematurely released a Gmail Labs feature that would let you send SMS text messages via Gmail chat. They’ve pulled back the feature so that they can correct some bugs, but they expect it to be available again in about two weeks.

crossover.jpgCodeWeavers Struggles with Giveaway
Last week us [link] and nearly every other technology site wrote about the free giveaway of CrossOver Pro. Well, it turns out that 750,000 licenses were requested amounting to nearly $45 million worth of software. While that sounds like a huge loss I’m sure word got out to a lot of people who had never heard of their software, and in the end this essentially became a massive amount of advertising for CodeWeavers.

Sony Ericsson exec dismisses rumors of a schism

Despite some nasty financial losses and a rumored smackdown of a PSP phone proposal, the Sony Ericsson joint venture is apparently as strong as ever. That’s what Senior Marketing Manager Richard Dorman is saying, denying any talks of a split. He also noted that both companies had been losing money in their respective handset division prior to the assimilation, and the partnership is “full steam ahead.” That’s great, now how about showing us some more Hikaru, hm?

Sirius XM in bailout talks with DirecTV

Safe to say that satellite radio is far down the list of priorities for Uncle Sam’s bailout bucks, so Sirius XM CEO Mel Karmazin pounded some pavement today, hitting up DirecTV and its parent company Liberty Media to try and save his bankrupted radio hydra. Apparently Smelly Melly isn’t as hot for EchoStar owner Charles Ergan to buy Sirius XM out as was previously rumored, but there’s a showdown brewing: Ergan’s been busy taking control of Sirius XM’s debt, so any deal with Liberty / DirecTV would result in feuding ownership interests. Making things even more interesting, it sounds like Ergan and Karmazin don’t really get along, so this deal with DirecTV is basically his last shot at keeping his job. Desperate men do desperate things — we’ll see how this one shakes out.

Data tethering is a go on Palm Pre

There are many things the Pre can do. Tragically, swallow a microSD card whole (or otherwise) is not one of them, which is kind of unfortunate considering that only 7.4GB of the integrated 8GB will be available to the user — but it turns out that tethering, thankfully, is. Newly-published tech specs on Sprint’s site reveal that you’ll be able to use your little EV-DO Rev. A monster as a modem both over Bluetooth and USB cable — something the Pre’s arch nemesis cannot so far (at least, not in any official capacity). Whether this helps push AT&T and Apple over the edge remains to be seen, but in the meantime, we’ll be pushing close to a megabit per second upstream, thank you very much.

Top 5 coolest movie robots

This latest top 5 involves a subjective determination of the coolest robots ever to appear in a movie, including androids. Exhaustive research, including a lifetime of watching robots in movies, led to this culminating point in my career. The response on Twitter and Facebook when I asked for suggestions was overwhelming.

In fact, it will probably spin off into two more episodes. There are enough TV robots out there to do a separate top 5 just on cool robots of the small screen. And we might even squeeze out a top 5 real robots. They’re actually getting cool enough to do it.

In the meantime, I promised I would post the full list of robot suggestions I got on the Web so hear you go. Watch the video for the top 5 and the full list of suggestions comes after the jump. It’s a pretty long list. Just goes to show, nothing beats the hive mind.

Samsung’s Android phones delayed, won’t show up at MWC

Looks like Samsung will be one of the few companies not to show off an Android device at next week’s Mobile World Congress. Head of marketing for mobile device division Younghee Lee told The Guardian that none of their Google-powered handsets would be making it out to the show. As for that June launch on Sprint and T-Mobile we heard about back in December, the new plan is to launch in the second half of this year. Hey, at least we’ve got the i8910 to look forward to.

iPhone App Satiates Your Nerdy Font Curiosity

Playtag
Steve Jobs would love this iPhone app called WhatTheFont. See some pretty letters and dying to know what the font is? Snap a photo of some of the text with your iPhone, run the sample through WhatTheFont, and it’ll bring up some matches.

Pretty neat. We tested it on a Wired magazine article. The only catch is it takes some time to bring up a match: First you have to upload the photo, then the app highlights each letter and asks you to verify whether it guessed each of them correctly. You uncheck the letters incorrectly identified and then submit the sample. Finally, after some waiting, WhatTheFont displays a list of the closest matches it can find.

The app is free, so why not give it a try?

Tesla tidbits: new retail stores, Model S prototype, extended warranty

Last we heard, Tesla was reevaluating some business decisions as it sought to become a thriving, profitable enterprise in 2009. In a lengthy newsletter sent out to over 60,000 subscribers today, CEO Elon Musk has laid out a torrent of news. Most notable are the imminent openings of retail locations in Chicago and London’s Knightsbridge district, with four other locations slated to open before the year’s end. Additionally, a street-drivable prototype of the Model S four door sedan will be unveiled on March 26th, with production scheduled for 2011. We’re also informed of updates on the Smart car / Daimler partnership, a few new interior options for the Roadster, a battery replacement program and the new extended warranty. Chances are, Tesla owners have already digested all of this, but those looking in from the outside should certainly have a peek at the full letter just after the break.
