Bid For Your Groceries

Bid%20For%20Your%20Groceries.jpg

Iconoculture: From frozen meats to breakfast cereal, cost-conscious shoppers are bidding on heavily discounted items at grocery auctions, with average savings of between 50-90%.

Sprouting up at auction halls across the country, the gatherings put leftover and slightly damaged groceries on the auction block. Arriving from supermarkets, distribution centers and restaurant suppliers, the goods might otherwise have found their way into salvage stores or food banks.

While the items may be dinged up or close to expiration, everything is hawked as perfectly edible, and guaranteed with a full refund.

The combination of the recession and rising food costs has consumers opening up to new and often creative ways of saving on basic staples like food.

Best Buy Mobile to get some Pre stock on June 7th?

If this latest bit of Pre intel scored by Boy Genius Report is to be believed, it looks like you might be able to pick up one of 4,500 of Palm’s latest and greatest as early as June 7. According to a tip from a supposed Best Buy insider, the venerable retailer could be gearing up to launch the hotly anticipated handset in just over a month’s time, though it’s not clear whether this’ll coincide with Sprint’s full-scale launch or come before or after. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, they’ve got some possible numbers on what this beauty will run you: $199.99 for new customers with a 2-year plan, $299.99 for upgrades, and a cool $999.99 contract-free — though in our experience, Best Buy Mobile frequently has its pricing wrong ahead of launch, so these are definitely subject to change.

RipNAS Statement: world’s first SSD-based CD ripping NAS device

We’ll be perfectly honest with you — the Atom-powered RipNAS definitely caught our interest when it launched with practically no major competitors back in February. Now, the RipNAS family has grown by two with the introduction of the Statement SSD and Statement HDD. We’re told that the former is the world’s first SSD-based CD ripping NAS device, and we’ve absolutely no reason to believe otherwise. The totally silent, all-silver box is based on the Windows Home Server OS and handles a cornucopia of tasks: CD ripping, media streaming and networked file storage. Internal specifications include a dual-core Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM and four USB 2.0 ports. The Statement SSD arrives in a 500GB configuration (2 x 250GB SSDs), while the Statement HDD holds 3TB by way of two 1.5TB drives; mum’s the word on pricing, but don’t bank on ’em being cheap.

Easily Organize The Status Bar In Firefox

This article was written on October 19, 2006 by CyberNet.

Firefox StatusBar

I am a very organized person and I like to have things the way that I want them. That’s why I just started using the Firefox extension called Organize Status Bar. It will let you customize the order of anything that appears in your Status Bar…or you can even hide certain things if you don’t need them.

It is very easy to use but it would be cool if the extension allowed for drag-and-drop ordering. I’m not going to complain though because once I set the order that I want there is really no need for me to go back and continuously adjust it. This one will definitely be going into my list of favorite extensions!

Cincinnati Bell lands Nokia’s XpressMusic 5800: $149.99

Good one, Cincinnati Bell — you totally got us. Oh, wait. This isn’t a joke? For the second time in as many months, the aforesaid carrier has somehow managed to land a white-hot Nokia handset before any other operator in America. This go ’round, the company is becoming the first in the US to offer a subsidized version of Nokia’s polarizing XpressMusic 5800, bringing it to customers in the Ohio region for $149.99. Those looking to do without any strings can procure one for $349.99 (which is still $50 less than what Nokia’s asking), but it’s the bragging rights here that make it all worthwhile. So, how long before a real carrier follows suit?

Update: And here’s the press release.

[Thanks, Adam]

RIM’s BlackBerry Curve 8900 hitting AT&T next month?

We’re beginning to wonder if we’ll ever see RIM’s BlackBerry Curve 8900 hit the AT&T airwaves, but considering just how long it takes for a phone to navigate through the carrier’s absurdly long certification process, we’ll chalk this one up to technical delays. After spotting the so-called Javelin in AT&T attire way back in November of last year, Boy Genius Report now has it on authority that the handset will finally debut next month. Unfortunately for those hoping for a little bonus in exchange for their patience, it’s said to be “a mirror” of the T-Mobile version outside of the bundled Bold themes. Pricing details are still under wraps, but if you’ve waited this long, do the dollars really matter?

Researchers develop technique to unscramble light for a much sharper picture

Trying to circumvent the need to choose between getting a wide-angle shot and zooming in for details, a team of researchers at Princeton led by electric engineer Jason Fleischer have developed a new method to get the best of both worlds, by passing the light through a “nonlinear crystal” that would normally distorts the picture. A computer algorithm then pieces together the data and, as they claim, produces a wide-view image that also manages to capture the finer points otherwise missing when using conventional techniques. The goal is to build “super-resolution” microscopes for better medical diagnostics, but the group also sees uses in the fields of data encryption and lithography / microchip production. Is it too much to ask that our next Canon or Nikon have this a standard feature?

New Poll: Have you downloaded the Windows 7 Beta?

This article was written on February 09, 2009 by CyberNet.

It’s definitely about time that we post a new poll. For our last poll, we asked you to tell us about your monitor(s). A monitor is one of those essential things that we as computer users couldn’t live without. We’ll get into the results of what kinds of monitors you guys are using, but first we’ll introduce our new poll.

With the Windows 7 Beta currently available for download, we thought we’d ask you whether or not you’ve downloaded it. Windows 7 is essentially Microsoft’s second shot at getting Vista right with performance improvements and new features. The beta has been available, unofficially since late December (08′) and officially since January (09′).

Before you vote, if you want to get your hands on the beta, remember to do it before February 10th. That’s when Microsoft will no longer make it available to the public.

Download Here

New Poll: Have you downloaded the Windows 7 Beta?

Options:

  • Yes, I’ve downloaded it but haven’t installed it
  • Yes, I’ve downloaded and installed it
  • No, I haven’t downloaded it yet, but need to
  • No I don’t intend to download it

You may vote below if you have Flash enabled, or vote in the side-bar to your right.

Previous Poll Wrap-Up

In our previous poll where we asked you to tell us about your monitor, we found that:

  • The majority of you use an LCD Monitor
  • Most of you use only 1 monitor (compared to a dual monitor set-up)
  • The majority of you are using a monitor that’s 19 or 20 inches in size

Cowon’s 32GB S9 PMP goes on sale in America

We knew you’d do the right thing Cowon, we just knew it. Barely a fortnight after the company introduced its most capacious S9 to date over in South Korea, said player has made its way stateside… at least that’s the impression that we get. Listed now as “in stock” on Amazon, the 32GB Titanium / Black unit is shown as being sold by JetAudio, which just so happens to be Cowon’s official online home for sales. If you surf over to the S9 section on JetAudio’s website, however, the 16GB model is still listed as the largest one available. We’re guessing the latter’s admin hasn’t had time to update things between that Friday night rave and that six pack of Dos Equis on Saturday, but we hear Amazon has a pretty good reputation, anyway.
