At $100, the underpowered Pixi doesn’t look like a great value against its bigger, older brother — but at the $30 Walmart is charging through its partner LetsTalk, the game changes a bit, doesn’t it? Sure, $70 isn’t that huge of a difference quantitatively, but emotionally, $30 is basically an overpriced meal or two — and considering the old adage of “a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips,” wouldn’t you just rather have webOS? We’ve heard of some bad experiences with LetsTalk rebates in the past, but in this case, it’s just an instant discount, so it seems like it could be a no-brainer for on-the-fencers.

There are a lot of eye-catching iPhone and iPod cases out there, but for the most part they look like they were designed for a young, hip audience. Your options can be limited if you’re looking for something more on the elegant and graceful side. Two new cases from Griffin, however, are going to change that.

By partnering with design firm Chilewich Sultan, Griffin is launching the Griffin + Chilewich line of accessories. Its first product, the Elan Form Chilewich, is made of woven vinyl and comes in two shades of gray.

The case is built on a polycarbonate shell, which is covered with woven vinyl that has the appearance of cloth. Vinyl yarn has a sheen that cloth doesn’t have, however, and is both durable and easy to clean.

The Elan Form Chilewich ($39.99) is available at Griffin’s site, as well as the Apple Store and MoMA Design Store.

While every Apple Store is in some sense a place of reverence, the new Upper West Side store unabashedly evokes that feeling, more than any other. It used to be a Victoria’s Secret.

I call it a temple because the architecture conveys a nearly religious aesthetic, a place to worship Apple, beyond any other Apple store you’ve ever been to. The top floor’s a vast open space, enclosed by spartan stone walls which support a massive glass ceiling. The rows of tables in the main room feel like pews.

I can’t tell you—and the pictures can’t show you—how utterly open and expansive the room feels. Apple says it has more demo units than any other store in the world. To give you an idea of the space, the walls are 45 feet tall, and could fit 11 Apple 5th Avenue Cubes inside. It’s the spareness that’s breathtaking. It’s cold. Not literally, but the stone walls, the glass, the sheer space rob it of any sense of warmth or feeling. The only sense of life in room is the products. It’s a temple to them, really.

The beating heart, where things actually happen is tucked underground. The Genius Bar and personal training space is the biggest ever in an Apple store, able to handle up to 100 customers at once at 45 feet long. It’s pretty much like any other Apple store down there, just bigger.

It’s impressive. The store, at 67th and Broadway, opens Saturday. And they’re giving away 2500 commemorative shirts if you’re that kind of crazy.

At TEDMED, I witnessed video clips showing science I never knew was so advanced. Dr. Anthony Atala has been growing human tissue and organs, in a lab, for nearly two decades. He’s even printed kidneys from a cell-stuffed inkjet printer.

The footage below is from the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, one of the world’s largest labs dedicated to regenerative medicine—a field interested in repairing or replacing human tissue so the body can self-heal.

This collection is sort of a greatest hits of Dr. Atala’s last 20 years of research (no, none of this was done overnight on a whim), though almost none of what you’ll see has left the lab for clinical trials. Karen Richardson, Sr. Communications Manager at the lab, walks us through the videos in the gallery below. What can we do in organ growing/generation today?

Laboratory-grown organs and tissues are already benefiting patients today. For example, laboratory-grown bladders are being tested in children with spina bifida and adults with spinal cord injuries and will soon be tested in patients with bladder cancer. Tissue engineering technology has been used to repair narrowed urethras, the tube that empties urine from the body.

What will we be doing in 5 years?

We are currently working to engineer 22 different tissues and organs in the laboratory, including blood vessels, heart valves, bone, muscle, kidneys livers. Scientific progress isn’t always linear, so it’s impossible to predict how long it will take to reach our goals.

In 10?

In addition to tissue engineering, our lab and others are working toward cell therapies to benefit a variety of conditions, from diabetes to urinary incontinence and heart failure. There are many challenges to overcome—and the timeframe is impossible to predict—but we do see promise in these technologies.

In 20? (I know, totally nuts, but that’s what makes it so fun.)

I don’t know how long it will take, but I do foresee a future when organs will be available off-the-shelf, ready to “plug in” and replace injured or diseased organs. I believe we’ll have a boutique of technologies that will includes tissue engineering and cell therapies and doctors will select the ideal treatment based on the patient’s needs.

This week, Gizmodo is exploring the enhanced human future in a segment we call This Cyborg Life. It’s about what happens when we treat our body less as a sacred object and more as what it is: Nature’s ultimate machine.

Color us shocked and elated. Boxee, the white-hot startup that has risen from nothing to everywhere thanks to its internet TV software portal, has just announced that a deal has been inked between it and an undisclosed “hardware partner.” If you’ll recall, we actually heard that the outfit was mulling the production of its own set-top-box back in January, and now it looks like Roku, Apple TV and a host of other mini PCs will have yet another formidable rival vying for space underneath the tele. The firm isn’t spilling any details whatsoever on the so-called “Boxee Box,” but we are told that mockups and the like will be presented at the Boxee Beta Unveiling on December 7th. Oh, and as if you aren’t excited enough already, chew on this — the company has informed us that they believe “this will be the first of several living room devices you’ll see running Boxee in 2010,” so don’t be shocked if your favorite game console or Blu-ray player gains an embedded Boxee app in the near future.
