The Free iPhone Apps You Need To Download Right Now

Nobody wants to pay for iPhone apps, and some people simply don’t. The good news is, you don’t really need to: For almost every paid app, there’s a free app that’s nearly as good. Here are the best of the best.

A lot of these apps will be familiar to anyone who’s checked out our Essential iPhone Apps directory before, and yeah, there is a lot of overlap. What we’ve done, basically, is strip out the dollar signs from list, then fill in the gaps with more free.

With the new list, you can turn a fresh, untouched iPhone or iPod Touch into a decked-out powerhouse without spending a single dollar.

(To view the following gallery as a single page, click here.)

What counts as an essential iPhone app changes all the time, and so should our guide: If we’ve missed anything huge, or you’ve got a much better suggestion for a particular type of app, let us know, or say so in the comments. We’ll be updating this thing pretty frequently, and a million Gizmodo readers can do a better job at sorting through the app mess than a single Gizmodo editor. Enjoy!

Apple patent application details universal iPhone / iPod dock

Don’t get your hopes up too much just yet, but it looks like you might one day no longer need to detangle a USB cable or fiddle with a plastic dock adapter the next time you want to charge or sync your iPhone or iPod. That’s if this recently revealed patent application for a new type of universal dock from Apple turns into an actual product, at least. The secret to the dock, such as it is, is that the base would be made of an elastic, sponge-like substance that could conform to any device and hold it in place. What’s more, the dock would apparently even be able retain the imprint of your device for convenient use next time, and be reset at the push of the button to let you use it with another device — we’re not quite sure how this thing is supposed to hold up a tablet, though.

Dell rechristens the USFF with OptiPlex 780 mini PC

What’s smaller than a small form factor PC? Frankly, a lot. Cells, shrimp, quarters — you name it. That said, there aren’t many bona fide PCs out there that can shrink down beyond the admittedly vague SSF dimensions, but Dell’s making another push for its Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) as the “world’s smallest fully functional commercial desktop PC with an integrated power supply and Intel vPro technology.” Of course, there’s quite a bit of qualification going on there (and rightfully so, given just how tiny the fit-PC2i is), but those interested in taking the plunge can order one with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, Windows 7 and a host of other run-of-the-mill amenities starting at $629.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit now rockin’ in Orlando

Heads-up, thrill seekers: the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is finally open and making laps at Universal Studios Orlando. If you’ll recall, this coaster was actually announced way back in March of 2008, and after its opening was delayed a few times while kinks were worked out, we’re happy to say that it’s now capturing the most intimate emotions of those who willfully strap themselves in. We recently had an opportunity to catch a ride in between rainstorms and spats of Tiger Woods drama down in Central Florida, and being the roller coaster freaks that we are, we had a tough time pulling ourselves away from the adrenaline rush to focus on the technology making it all happen. Without question, this ride is the now the main draw at Universal Studios; the bulk of the wild coasters are at the neighboring Islands of Adventure, but this one’s definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in the area.

You’ll notice that each car actually uses platform seating, so the rear rows can see slightly above those in front. Once strapped in, a bright touchscreen panel awaits your attention on the top of the front lap bar; you can navigate through a half dozen or so genres in order to select one of 30 tracks, and while it’s not publicized, those in the know will realize that a few Easter Egg tracks are hidden if you mash the right buttons. Once you select your ride soundtrack, the music begins to blast from the headrest-mounted speakers and you’re towed straight up in the air as you await the first big drop. After you unload, you’re funneled into a media area where employees are waiting to assist you in the purchase of your ride photo or video. We found out that each individual video is recorded in 720 x 480 resolution, and amazingly enough, each one is ready the moment you step down off the ride.

Guests can choose to purchase their ride DVD (complete with their song of choice) for $29.95 or as part of a few bundle packs that include photos, frames, etc. Photos can be purchased as actual prints, or they can be emailed directly from the kiosk; in our experience, a confirmation email was sent immediately, and our ride photo (it’s actually an e-card that shows the photo at the end of the animation) arrived around an hour later. For an idea of what a first-hand video from the ride would look like, pop on past the break.

iPhone in the UK on Friday

This article was written on November 07, 2007 by CyberNet.

iphone at 02

This coming Friday, November 9th, is another big launch date for Apple.  It’s the day that the iPhone officially goes on sale in the UK.  Apple’s press release says the phone will go on sale at 6:02 PM, but I’m sure that’s a typo and they meant to say 6:00. So here’s what you need to know:

Where:

  • The iPhone will be available at Apple Stores, 02, and Carphone Warehouse retail and online stores
  • Over 1300 different locations will have the iPhone for sale
  • At 02 stores, over 450 new employees were hired to be iPhone specialists

When:

  • November 9 @ 6:00 PM

Details:

  • Price: £269 for the 8GB model
  • Consumers will be able to purchase two iPhones per person on a first come first serve basis
  • Buyers must lock into an 18 month contract with service provider 02 (compared to 24 month contract here in the US, it’s not so bad)

Tariffs:

  • Three tariffs will be available starting at £35
  • Tariffs include unlimited usage of 02 mobile data network
  • Also includes unlimited use of The Cloud (largest single public Wi-Fi network in the UK)

Any of you UK’ers planning to line-up early on Friday to get your hands on an iPhone?

Think Electric returns from the brink, begins production of Think City two-seater

Norway’s Think Electric may have managed to attract some backing from GE in early 2008, but it looks to have quickly ran out of cash after that, and was forced to completely shut down its operations about a year ago. Well, kids, dreams do come true — or production lines can be started again, at least — and after securing some funding earlier this year, the company has now announced that its two-seat Think City electric vehicle is now back on track for a release by the end of the year. That initial production run will apparently consist primarily of 2,300 cars that have already been pre-ordered in Europe, but Think Electric says it also plans to begin selling the car in the U.S. sometime next year, and license its electric power train to other automakers looking for a readymade option.
