iPhone SDK Downloaded over 100,000 Times

This article was written on March 12, 2008 by CyberNet.

It’s been almost a week since Apple had their iPhone SDK event and announced that developers would now be able to create cool apps for the iPhone. Some of the applications demonstrated at the event gave us a glimpse at what we’ll be seeing over the next several months which left many iPhone owners excited. It appears developers are just as excited about developing the apps as users are to get their hands on them because the SDK has been downloaded over 100,000 times.

In a press release from Apple, senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phillip Schiller says:

Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days.

If we were to make a list of the top five applications we’d want to see, they’d include:

  1. Google Talk Chat Client
  2. Flash
  3. Spreadsheet/Document editor
  4. Voice dialing
  5. Streaming TV/radio

Number one on the list is a Google Talk chat client which would be nice because it’s my primary messaging service, however, I was disappointed to learn that the application (if developed) wouldn’t be able to run in the background. At the SDK event, Jobs never mentioned the fact that only one application will be able to run at a time. On page 16 of the guideline book, it says “Only one iPhone application can run at a time, and third-party applications never run in the background.  This means that when users switch to another application, answer the phone, or check their email, the application they were using quits.

Despite the fact that only one app can be running at a time, we can’t wait to see what kind of apps those 100,000 downloads will produce!

In other iPhone news, The iPhone Dev Team has already managed to jailbreak the firmware (2.0) that hasn’t even been released to the public yet.  Apparently they got their hands on it from one of the beta testers. They worked their magic and now when the firmware is released in June, users should be good to go.

Dell Vostro 1015 now on sale in America: starts at $429

Wait a second — a business-centric laptop… with style? Dell‘s 15.6-inch Vostro 1015, which was announced alongside the still-unavailable (in the US, anyway) Vostro 1014 and Vostro 1088 back in August, has just emerged for purchase, and the relatively attractive case and low starting price definitely has our attention. Granted, the $429 base model gets saddled with a 2.2GHz Celeron 900 processor, but $629 buys you a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T6670, Windows 7 Professional, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, a 320GB (5400RPM) hard drive, dual-layer DVD burner, 2 megapixel webcam, integrated WiFi, GMA 4500MHD graphics and a 6-cell battery. Anyone down for stroking their inner suit?

[Thanks, Peter]

ViewSonic outs 23-inch VP2365wb and 26-inch VP2655wb IPS LCD monitors

ViewSonic’s last round of LCDs were nothing short of unforgettable, but these two might actually grab (and retain) your attention if you consider yourself a “professional.” The 23-inch VP2365wb and 26-inch VP2655wb both fall into the firm’s VP series of 1080p pro LCDs, and the both of ’em are blessed with IPS panels and 4-port USB hubs. You’ll also find pivoting stands on the pair, and while the 23-incher gets a 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, the big boy steps it up to 1,920 x 1,200 and offers a 118 percent NTSC wide color gamut for those discerning retinas of yours. Interested? The duo is available now if you look in the right places, and while the VP2365wb will cost you just $399, the larger sibling will ding you for $1,299.

Phone-O-Matic Puts DSLR Lens on iPhone

4149861932_e61c7a0862

Bhautik Joshi is the curious type, and likes to learn by doing. So when he started to wonder if he could hook up an SLR lens to an iPhone, the obvious thing to do was to try it. The resulting behemoth is the Phone-O-Scope, a monstrous mingling of an iPhone, a Canon lens and a sprinkling of plumbing supplies.

Joshi started off with the “optical coupler”, the device to get the light from one place to another. In this case the coupler was a trio of lenses from an old CD player, stuck together with putty and wrapped in paper to make cylinder. This unit works as a nice macro lens, but for the Phone-O-Matic it is there to bend the light from the back of the SLR lens into a shape more acceptable to the tiny iPhone camera.

After some measuring (using cardboard tubes and rubber bands), Joshi made a proper tube from PVC pipe couplings (threaded, to allow for focus adjustment), a rear lens-cap and a cheap iPhone case. The lens unit was secured to the case in the old fashioned way: a handful of duct-tape.

The Phone-O-Matic isn’t going to turn your iPhone into a DSLR, but the results are great — more Holga than Canon 5D MkII, although as Joshi points out, this is most likely the result of using CD player lenses. It’s also rather impractical — if you have space for this getup in your bag, you have space for a real camera. Still, that’s not the point. The point was to see if it could be done, and it can.

Top 5 Assclowns Laughing at the iPhone Back in 2007

I wonder how many times Steve Ballmer laughed about the iPhone after pooping all over it in this 2007 interview. My guess: Not many. Don’t worry Steve, here’s the rest of the top 5 assclowns who dug their own grave:

iriver Story reviewed, incites rebellion over price

If you didn’t feel you got the whole Story yesterday, here’s a pleasing helping of seconds, this time in the form of a full-on review. The PC Pro team rates iriver’s Kindle emulator as a “serious contender,” and places its readability on par with Sony’s touch-less Readers. While congratulations are also meted out for a decent integrated MP3 player, 3.5mm headphone jack, and the wide variety of supported formats, two issues stood out for the reviewers. One was that the support for Word, Excel and Powerpoint files was somewhat hit-and-miss, with zooming sometimes not working and rendering some files unreadable. But the major gripe related to the asking price of £230 including taxes (around $380), which the Story was not considered capable of justifying. Hit the link below for more — even if your interest is purely academic.
