ASUS Eee PC 1201N debuts early at Newegg

OK, kids, here you have it: the Asus Eee PC 1201N has arrived a little earlier than expected. At least we think that’s what Newegg is trying to tell us. If you hop on over to the site RIGHT THIS MINUTE you can see that the thing is available for ordering, in black, with a limit of one per customer. It’s better than waiting until sometime next month, eh? There’s no telling if this is a snafu on the e-tailer’s part — everyone else in the western world has it available for pre-order, with a ship date of January 15 — but if you feel like taking a gamble there is only one thing left to do: hit the source link.

[Thanks, Yoav E]

Hands On: enTourages Slimmed-Down eDGe eBook Reader

eDGe Production 1

Last month, we had an opportunity to try out the eDGe eBook reader from enTourage–a dual-screen device with a 10.1-inch LCD alongside a traditional E INK display. To make things even more interesting, the $490 eDGe runs Android and offers far more features than any other eBook device on the market.

The working sample we saw and photographed last month was a bulky pre-production model, however, so enTourage returned to our office today with a much slimmer production sample. The eDGe will ship in February, with models ranging in price from $490 to $530, depending on color. enTourage is currently in talks with service provides to add 3G to the device.

Acer gets in the Olympic spirit with special edition Aspire Timeline 1810TZ

Lenovo really went to town with its Olympics-branded gear, but while Acer is a major Winter Olympics partner (and keeping the spot for 2012 as well), it’s taking a bit more of a tame approach at the outset. This Acer Aspire Timeline 1810TZ, for instance, merely slaps some silver rings on the lid and calls it a day. Pretty classy, and the price isn’t bad: $580 for a 11.6-inch CULV laptop with 3GB of RAM and Windows 7. Perfect for the multitasking ski jumper in your life.

Exclusive Clip From Family Guy’s Empire Strikes Back Has A New Lando

We’ve got the first exclusive clip from Seth MacFarlane‘s second Family Guy Star Wars spoof. Since Empire Strikes Back is the best of the bunch, MacFarlane is really going to have to bring it… and so far, so good.

The official name for the Empire Strikes back spoof is Something Something Something Dark Side, and it’ll be on DVD & Blu-ray 12/22.

Military Could Use iPhones to Track Friends, Enemies in War

screen-shot-2009-11-19-at-103200-am
What if the iPhone could be used in war? True, it’s primarily a consumer product, but it’s versatile and always connected to the internet (assuming you have network reception) — so why not?

That’s the idea behind new iPhone apps being showcased by Raytheon, a military contractor, at the Intelligence Warfighting Summit in Tucson. One app called the One Force Tracker will provide live data tracking the location of friends and foes on real-time maps. The app will also be used to communicate with other units.

The image above depicts multiple personnel of a military force or first-response team on a map displayed in One Force Tracker.

“Among several objectives, Raytheon wants to enable superior situational awareness for war fighters or for police, fire and rescue teams, enabling them to quickly make more informed decisions,” a Raytheon spokesman told Wired.com.

Raytheon is also developing an air-traffic simulator similar to the popular iPhone game Flight Control. Raytheon’s app aims to enable air-traffic controllers to repetitively practice (in multilevel, gamelike fashion) aspects of their training regimen anytime, anywhere. The image below shows a simulation mode of the app, which is designed to allow controllers to practice “vectoring” multiple aircraft. The goal is to maintain safe air speed and distance between units, among other factors. (We’d imagine Raytheon’s air-traffic simulator is much more difficult than Flight Control.)

Neat stuff. What’s funny is the military usually gets all the cool tech before consumers do, but this is a rare case of the opposite. Raytheon isn’t the first to try out military apps for the iPhone, either. Previously, Wired.com reported on BulletFlight, a $30 iPhone app for military snipers to calculate ballistics. The app was designed to complement a gun mount for the iPod Touch.

Engadget’s Holiday Gift Guide: Desktops

Welcome to the Engadget Holiday Gift Guide! The team here is well aware of the heartbreaking difficulties of the seasonal shopping experience, and we want to help you sort through the trash and come up with the treasures this year. Below is today’s bevy of hand curated picks, and you can head back to the Gift Guide hub to see the rest of the product guides as they’re added throughout the holiday season.

Let’s face it, not everyone needs (or wants) to carry their computer around on the daily routine. Sacrificing portability can have its advantages — and while nettops and all-in-one PCs have become a much more dominant force this year, the traditional, highly upgradeable desktop tower is still the reigning bang-for-the-buck champ. Just make sure your certain special someone has enough desk real estate for whatever potentially-enormous chassis you decide to take home and wrap.

Cyber Technology’s UAV perches, stares, makes us a little uncomfortable (Update: now with video!)

We’ve seen UAVs that hover in the past, but if you’re looking for something that eschews rotors for nearly silent ducted fans, you’ll need to get your hands on the cyberQuad by Cyber Technology. The fans don’t produce sparks (which is why this thing was recently tested with much success in an extended survey of an offshore drilling platform / oil rig damaged by fire), and its “perch and stare” capabilities mean that it can find a stable spot and sit unattended — not only saving battery time that would otherwise be lost by hovering in place, but taking it all in with whatever video equipment / sensors the operator might have placed on-board. Just the thing for sniffing out enemy combatants and relaying the info to your One Force Tracker-equipped iPhone, perhaps? Get a closer look after the break. [Warning: PDF source link]

Update: Thanks to Randers for hooking us up with some video of the thing in action. It still makes us a little uncomfortable, all that staring…

Video: Popular Science Publisher Is Planning for Tablets, Too

Condé Nast was the first publisher to show off a concept video demonstrating a magazine digitally repurposed for a touchscreen tablet, using Wired as an example. Time Warner followed with a concept tablet edition of Sports Illustrated. And now Bonnier, the company that owns Popular Science, has produced a tablet concept video as well.

Codenamed Mag+, Bonnier’s video prototype (above) looks stunning. Rather than simply digitizing entire magazine pages, the concept software allows you to scroll up and down blocks of text. That gives more space and emphasis to artwork, which is true to the magazine experience.

Of course, this is all vaporware until we see a manufacturer deliver a successful tablet product (cough, Apple). For now, we can appreciate that magazines are thinking hard about the future of publishing, and these are some awesome ideas.
